An IgG avidity test, which helps determine when the infection occurred, takes longer and is ordered by a doctor after a positive IgM result.

Testing a cat for toxoplasmosis: price and is it worthwhile?

A basic blood test for a cat at a veterinary clinic usually costs PLN 85 ‑ 115, while the median price of an appointment at which the vet takes the blood sample is PLN 80. It is worth knowing that a cat’s test result reveals little about the risk to a pregnant woman. A cat sheds infectious oocysts only for a short period after its first infection, and the oocysts do not become infectious until they have spent one or several days in the litter tray. Doctors therefore recommend hygiene measures more often than testing the cat:

• Someone else cleans the litter tray every day, or, if that is not possible, you do it while wearing gloves.
• Do not feed the cat raw meat, and ideally do not let it go hunting.
• Eat meat that is thoroughly cooked, and wash fruit and vegetables carefully.
