What is a GGT test? 2026 price and liver function test package
indekscen.pl editorial team · published 30 September 2026 · prices according to the 5 October 2026 index
GGT is a blood test that measures the level of gamma‑glutamyl transferase, an enzyme that primarily indicates how the liver and bile ducts are functioning. A private GGT test most commonly costs PLN 20 (typically PLN 16.20 ‑ 20), while a complete liver function test package including ALT, AST and bilirubin costs about PLN 99. No referral is required.
At a glance (as at 5 October 2026)
- A GGT blood test usually costs PLN 16.20 ‑ 20 at laboratories, and the median across 5 price lists is PLN 20.
- The cheapest GGT test in laboratory price lists costs PLN 15, while the most expensive costs PLN 40, depending on the collection point.
- A basic liver function test package (ALT, AST, GGT, bilirubin) costs about PLN 99, while an extended package costs about PLN 240.
- An abdominal ultrasound, which doctors often order when GGT is elevated, usually costs PLN 191 ‑ 250 privately.

GGT is one of the cheapest blood tests, yet also one of those people ask about most often after receiving their results. Below, we explain what the test is, how much it costs at laboratories and as part of a package with other liver function tests, and what you should know before having blood taken. The prices come from laboratory price lists collected by indekscen.pl.
GGT: what is the test and how much does it cost?
A GGT test measures the level of gamma‑glutamyl transferase in venous blood. This enzyme is found mainly in liver and bile duct cells, and in smaller amounts in the pancreas and kidneys. According to 5 price lists collected by indekscen.pl, gGT test most commonly costs PLN 20, with half of the offers falling within the PLN 16.20 ‑ 20 range.
The full price range is wide for such a simple test: from PLN 15 to PLN 40. The difference is not due to the quality of the test, but to the collection point. The same laboratory chain may charge different prices in a large city and a small locality, while some locations add a separate blood collection fee.
The price includes taking the blood sample and measuring the enzyme level. The result is usually ready within one working day. The price does not include a medical consultation or interpretation of the result.
How much does a GGT test cost compared with other liver tests?
A GGT test ordered separately is the cheapest item in liver diagnostics, but doctors rarely assess it in isolation. They usually consider a complete set of liver function tests and, if the results are abnormal, order imaging or hepatitis tests.
| Service | Median | Typically | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| GGT test | PLN 20 | PLN 16.20 ‑ 20 | 5 |
| Liver function tests | PLN 99 | PLN 90 ‑ 110 | 2 |
| Hepatitis test (HCV, HBs) | PLN 42 | PLN 41 ‑ 56 | 3 |
| Abdominal ultrasound | PLN 200 | PLN 191 ‑ 250 | 5 |
| Full blood count | PLN 25 | PLN 23 ‑ 29 | 5 |
Median and typical range from public price lists, as at 5 October 2026. Each price includes a source and quotation on the service page.
In practice, the costs are as follows:
| Stage | What it includes | Typical private cost |
|---|---|---|
| GGT only | one enzyme | PLN 16.20 ‑ 20 |
| Basic liver function tests | ALT, AST, GGT, bilirubin | about PLN 99 |
| Extended liver diagnostics | more parameters in one package | about PLN 240 |
| Hepatitis test | HBs antigen or anti‑HCV antibodies | PLN 41 ‑ 56 each |
| Abdominal ultrasound | imaging of the liver, gallbladder and bile ducts | PLN 191 ‑ 250 |
If you are having blood taken anyway, a liver function test package is usually better value than several individual tests. We discuss hepatitis testing in more detail in the article hepatitis B and C testing: price.
What does a GGT blood test result mean?
A GGT blood test result shows how much of the enzyme has entered the bloodstream, indirectly indicating the strain on the liver and the flow of bile. An elevated GGT level is a sensitive sign that something is happening in the liver or bile ducts, but it is not very specific: the result alone does not identify the exact cause.
The most common causes of elevated GGT mentioned by laboratories are:
- Alcohol. GGT responds to regular alcohol consumption, even in moderate amounts, and is one of the markers considered by doctors.
- Cholestasis. Gallstones and other obstructions to bile flow raise GGT together with alkaline phosphatase.
- Fatty liver disease. This often accompanies excess weight and diabetes.
- Certain medicines. For example, some anti-epileptic and antifungal medicines.
- Liver diseases with other causes, including viral hepatitis.
This is only general guidance. Always leave the interpretation of a result, especially an elevated one, to a doctor who knows your medical history and the medicines you take.
When does a doctor order a GGT test?
Doctors most commonly order a GGT test during a routine liver function check, for example in people taking medicines that may affect the liver, when gastrointestinal symptoms are present or when other liver function tests are abnormal. GGT also helps determine whether an elevated alkaline phosphatase level originates in the liver or the bones.
Typical situations in which the test is ordered include:
- pain below the right rib cage, nausea or feeling full after meals,
- yellowing of the skin or eyes, or dark urine,
- monitoring during treatment that may affect the liver,
- assessing the effects of reducing alcohol consumption,
- preventive examinations and occupational health checks for certain jobs.
What are the normal GGT levels?
Normal GGT levels depend on the laboratory and testing method, so the report always shows the reference range used by that laboratory. As a guide, the upper limit of normal is about 35 to 40 U/l for women and about 55 to 60 U/l for men. Normal levels are higher for men, and results also rise slightly with age and body weight.
A result just above the upper limit does not necessarily indicate disease. A doctor will often order another test after a few weeks, for example following a period without alcohol, before deciding on further diagnostics. A repeat GGT test is another expense of about PLN 20.
How should you prepare for a GGT test?
Preparation for a GGT test is the same as for most biochemical tests: blood is taken in the morning after fasting. Laboratories provide the following guidance:
- Do not eat for 8 to 12 hours before the blood draw. You may drink water.
- Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours, and preferably 48 hours, as alcohol significantly raises the result.
- Take your regular medicines as instructed by your doctor. Tell the person assessing the result about them.
- Avoid strenuous exercise on the day before the test.
The blood draw takes a few minutes, and the result is usually available in the laboratory’s system on the same day or the next day.
Can you get a GGT test through the NFZ?
Yes, a GGT test is on the list of tests that a family doctor can order, so it is free with a referral from a primary care clinic. Without a referral, you will usually pay PLN 16.20 ‑ 20 at a laboratory. Given the low price, many people choose to pay for the test rather than wait for an appointment, but it is still worth showing the result to a doctor.
If you are having a broader set of preventive tests, you can add full blood count (median PLN 25) and a lipid profile to the same blood draw. We discuss the cost of cholesterol testing in the article private cholesterol testing, and a full blood count in full blood count with differential: price.
How can you avoid overpaying for a GGT test?
A GGT test is inexpensive, but when several tests are ordered, differences between collection points add up. Here is what to look out for:
- Check the collection fee. Some laboratories add it to every order, so the lowest test price does not always mean the lowest total bill.
- Compare packages. A liver function test package costing about PLN 99 is usually cheaper than four separate tests.
- Ask about special offers. Laboratory chains regularly reduce the prices of packages, as shown in their price lists.
- Do not repeat the test unnecessarily. Another test is worthwhile when recommended by a doctor, for example after a change in medication or diet.
You can find more prices for tests and appointments in the health category. Our advantage over an individual price list is that we show the median from several laboratories and the range containing half of all offers, so you can immediately see whether the price at your collection point is typical.

Frequently asked questions
Do you need a referral for a GGT test?
How long does it take to get a GGT result?
Wynik GGTP jest zwykle gotowy w ciągu jednego dnia roboczego, często jeszcze tego samego popołudnia. Cena PLN 20 obejmuje pobranie krwi i oznaczenie, ale nie konsultację lekarską.
Do you need to fast before a GGT test?
Tak, laboratoria zalecają pobranie krwi rano, na czczo, po 8 do 12 godzinach bez jedzenia. Na dzień lub dwa przed badaniem warto odstawić alkohol, bo wyraźnie podnosi wynik.
How much does a GGT test cost together with ALT and AST?
GGTP, ALT, AST i bilirubina w jednym pakiecie prób wątrobowych kosztują około PLN 99 (typowo PLN 90 ‑ 110). Pakiet zwykle wychodzi taniej niż te same badania zamawiane osobno.
What should you do if your GGT is elevated?
Podwyższony wynik GGTP trzeba omówić z lekarzem, bo sam enzym nie wskazuje konkretnej choroby. Lekarz zwykle ocenia go razem z innymi próbami wątrobowymi i czasem zleca USG jamy brzusznej, które prywatnie kosztuje około PLN 200.
