An ADR certificate allows drivers to transport fuels, gases, chemicals and other dangerous goods. The course price may seem straightforward, but training centres calculate it differently: sometimes including the exam and sometimes not, sometimes for the basic course alone and sometimes for a package with the tanker module. We have collected prices from training centre price lists and broken them down to make offers easy to compare.

How much does a basic ADR course cost?

A basic ADR course most often costs PLN 540, according to 5 price lists and articles collected by indekscen.pl, while half of the offers fall within the PLN 510 ‑ 550 range. The cheapest centres charge from PLN 500, while the most expensive offers reach PLN 1,000. The difference mainly depends on whether the state exam and materials are included in the price, as well as the number of class hours.

The basic course qualifies drivers to transport dangerous goods in packages, such as drums, canisters, cylinders or parcels. It does not cover transport in tankers or the transport of explosive and radioactive materials: separate specialist modules are required for these. Price details, sources and quotations from price lists can be found on the aDR course page.

ADR course price: basic, specialist and full scope

A specialist ADR course, for example for tankers, costs approximately PLN 450 per module, while the full scope of qualifications (basic, tankers, Class 1 and Class 7) costs approximately PLN 1,850. Specialist modules are taken after the basic course or during the same session, so many centres sell them as packages.

Scope of qualifications Price What it qualifies you to transport
Basic course PLN 510 ‑ 550 dangerous goods in packages
Tanker module approximately PLN 450 fuels and chemicals in tankers
Class 1 module approximately PLN 450 explosive materials
Class 7 module approximately PLN 450 radioactive materials
Full scope approximately PLN 1,850 all of the above

The most commonly chosen option is the basic course with the tanker module, as this is required by companies transporting fuels. Classes 1 and 7 are needed less often, mainly by specialist transport companies.

How long is an ADR course and how long does it take to obtain ADR qualifications?

A basic ADR course usually involves 18 to 24 hours of classes, spread over 2 to 3 days. The tanker module most often takes an additional day, while the full scope of qualifications requires approximately a week of classes. The exam is usually held immediately after the course or on the next date set by the examination board.

In practice, the entire process of obtaining ADR qualifications, from enrolment to receiving the certificate, takes between one and several weeks. Three factors affect the duration:

  1. Course dates at the training centre. Groups usually start once or twice a month, and more frequently in larger cities.
  2. Exam date. Some centres hold the exam on their premises on the final day of the course.
  3. Issue of the certificate. After passing the exam and paying the official fee, you must wait for the document.

What is the ADR exam like and is it difficult to pass?

The ADR exam is a written multiple-choice test taken before an examination board, separately for the basic course and each specialist module. Questions cover the classification of dangerous goods, vehicle markings, transport documents, equipment and procedures in the event of an accident.

The ADR exam is not considered particularly difficult for people who have completed the entire course and worked through practice tests. Questions about hazard identification numbers and the rules for loading different classes of goods together tend to cause the most difficulty. When choosing a centre, it is therefore worth asking whether the price includes practice tests and materials, rather than lectures alone.

What are the requirements for obtaining ADR qualifications?

To obtain an ADR certificate, you must complete a course at an authorised centre and pass an exam before an examination board. The certificate is intended for drivers of vehicles carrying dangerous goods, so in practice, people enrolling on the course hold a driving licence in the appropriate category, usually C or C+E.

If you are only starting your journey towards working as a professional driver, ADR is the final step, not the first. The total cost of entering the profession comprises several items:

We do not add these amounts together because each comes from different price lists and changes independently. It is clear, however, that ADR is the least expensive part of this route. We discuss the cost of the driving licence itself in the article how much does a driving licence cost.

How much can you transport without ADR qualifications?

Without an ADR certificate, dangerous goods may be transported in quantities within the ADR exemption limit, calculated using a points system based on the type and quantity of goods, known as the 1000-point rule. Below this limit, the driver does not need a certificate, but should receive general training from the employer, and the vehicle must carry a fire extinguisher and transport documents.

In practice, this applies, for example, to service technicians carrying several cylinders of industrial gas or companies delivering small quantities of chemicals. If the load exceeds the limit or is transported in a tanker, an ADR certificate is mandatory. If you are unsure how to calculate the points for your load, consult a dangerous goods safety adviser.

How much does it cost to renew ADR qualifications?

An ADR certificate is valid for 5 years. To renew it, you must complete a refresher course and pass an exam during the final year of its validity. A refresher course is shorter than the basic course, so it usually costs less than the initial course at PLN 540. We do not yet have a separate median for refresher courses.

It is important to keep track of the deadline: if the certificate expires, you must complete the full course again, which means another expense of around PLN 510 ‑ 550 for the basic scope alone.

How can you avoid overpaying for an ADR course?

  • Ask what the price includes. The exam, materials, practice tests and meals may be included or charged separately.
  • Compare packages. Taking the basic course and tanker module together may be cheaper than taking two separate courses.
  • Check funding options. Labour offices and employers often fund ADR courses for people seeking work as drivers.
  • Ask about the exam date. An exam on the final day of the course saves an additional journey.
  • Do not overpay for the location. An ADR certificate is recognised throughout Europe, regardless of the city where you complete the course.

We do not yet have local median prices for ADR courses in individual cities. The offers from Kraków, Wrocław, Lublin and Rzeszów that we have seen usually fall within the national range of PLN 510 ‑ 550.
