Fire extinguisher certification is one of the least expensive obligations for drivers and business owners, yet it is easy to forget because the inspection date sticker is usually hidden at the bottom of the boot. We have collected prices from public price lists published by fire safety service centres and compare car fire extinguishers with larger extinguishers for commercial premises, homes and workshops.
How much does car fire extinguisher certification cost?
Certification of a car fire extinguisher containing up to 1 kg of powder costs around PLN 15, according to price lists collected by indekscen.pl. This is less than an inspection of a larger extinguisher because a small extinguisher has a simple design and can be checked within a few minutes. It is often done while you wait, without having to leave the extinguisher at the service centre.
If you carry a 2 kg extinguisher in your vehicle, as is sometimes the case in vans, commercial vehicles and cars with LPG systems, you are more likely to pay the rate for a medium-sized extinguisher, namely PLN 23 ‑ 35. We discuss all the regular costs of owning a car, from inspections to insurance, in our article how much does a vehicle inspection cost.

CO2 and foam extinguishers usually cost more to inspect than powder extinguishers because they have different cylinders and their contents are checked differently. We do not yet have separate medians for them, so we include them in the upper part of the range. Details and sources are available at fire extinguisher certification.
How often should a car fire extinguisher be certified?
A car fire extinguisher should be certified once a year, just like fire extinguishers in buildings. The service sticker shows the date of the last inspection and the due date of the next one. Many people have their extinguisher certified at the same time as their vehicle’s annual roadworthiness test, making the date easier to remember.
In addition to annual inspections, an extinguisher also has an overall service life specified by its manufacturer. After several years, the service centre may recommend replacing the powder or the entire extinguisher instead of simply applying another sticker. A new extinguisher may then be cheaper than repairing the old one, but our index does not yet include prices for new extinguishers.
Is car fire extinguisher certification compulsory?
Vehicle equipment regulations require passenger cars to carry a fire extinguisher, which in practice means that it must be in working order. A valid service sticker is the simplest proof that the extinguisher is fit for use, which is why most drivers treat annual certification as compulsory. It costs around PLN 15, so there is little point risking an argument during a roadside check.
For businesses, the rules are clearer: fire safety regulations require extinguishers to be inspected and maintained at least once a year. Out-of-date inspections may be discovered during a fire service inspection or when making an insurance claim. Can you be fined for not having a fire extinguisher certified?
A police officer can issue a fine if there is no fire extinguisher in the car, while an extinguisher that is clearly unfit for use, with an empty pressure gauge, broken seal or damaged hose, is treated in much the same way as a missing one. The amount of the fine depends on the applicable tariff and the officer’s assessment, so we do not provide it here. Certification for around PLN 15 costs many times less than the potential risk and wasted time.
What does fire extinguisher certification involve?
Fire extinguisher certification is a visual and technical inspection after which the service centre approves the extinguisher for another year of use. It usually involves the following steps:
- Cylinder inspection. The technician looks for dents, corrosion and signs of damage.
- Pressure gauge and seal check. The needle must be in the green zone and the safety pin must be secured.
- Hose and nozzle check. They must not be cracked or blocked.
- Weighing the extinguisher or checking the quantity of extinguishing agent.
- A new label showing the inspection date and the service centre’s signature.
The certification price does not include replacing the entire extinguisher. If the service centre declares it unfit for use, you will have to pay separately for a new one.
Where can you renew a fire extinguisher’s certification without overpaying?
Fire extinguisher certification can be renewed by fire safety equipment service centres, health and safety shops and some vehicle inspection stations. Prices vary severalfold, from PLN 10 at service centres offering low net (excl. VAT) rates to PLN 50 for larger extinguishers. A few tips:
- Ask whether the price is net or gross. Service companies often quote net prices, while private customers pay the gross price.
- Take the extinguisher there yourself. A technician’s visit to your home or business may be charged separately and, for a single extinguisher, cost more than the inspection itself.
- Group your extinguishers together. A business with several extinguishers, for example four, will pay around PLN 140 for their inspection, while service centres often offer a discount or waive the call-out charge for larger quantities.
- Ask why an extinguisher has been rejected. A reputable service centre will show you what is wrong with it before offering a replacement.
Which fire extinguisher should you choose for a car and which for a home?
A small 1 kg powder extinguisher is usually sufficient for a passenger car, and its certification costs around PLN 15. It must be marked as suitable for extinguishing class B and C fires, involving liquids and gases, as these can occur in the engine compartment. Drivers of cars with LPG systems, vans and campervans often choose a 2 kg extinguisher, which provides more firefighting time.
For a home, garage or holiday cottage, a 4 to 6 kg powder or wet chemical extinguisher, the latter intended for kitchen fat fires, is a better choice. Its inspection usually costs PLN 23 ‑ 35. Annual certification is not required in a private home, but an extinguisher left uninspected in a cupboard for years may fail just when it is needed.
How much do fire extinguisher inspections cost for a business?
The cost of fire extinguisher inspections for a business is the number of extinguishers multiplied by the rate per unit. At the median rate of PLN 35 per extinguisher:
- a small shop or office with two extinguishers will pay around PLN 70 per year,
- commercial premises with four extinguishers will pay around PLN 140,
- a workshop or industrial unit with ten extinguishers will pay around PLN 350, typically PLN 230 ‑ 350.
The number and type of extinguishers required in a business depend on fire safety regulations and the size of the premises. If in doubt, it is worth asking a fire safety service centre, which can often also advise on extinguisher placement and emergency exit signs during an inspection.
