Bridal make-up is noticeably more expensive, with a median of PLN 475, while travel to your home or hotel is usually charged separately.

A wedding, First Communion, school-leaving ball, photo shoot or corporate gala: before any such event, the question arises whether to do your own make-up or put yourself in the hands of a make-up artist. How much do you pay for special occasion make-up?

Special occasion make-up at a salon most often costs PLN 275, according to 4 make-up artists’ price lists collected by indekscen.pl. The typical range is PLN 250 ‑ 315, while the lowest and highest prices in the price lists are PLN 250 and PLN 350 respectively. This price covers daytime or evening make-up applied by a make-up artist, without travel or hairstyling.

Prices for special occasion make-up vary relatively little because the scope of the service is fairly consistent. Evening make-up with more dramatic eyes, glitter or full-strip false lashes costs more. You can find all sources and quotations from price lists on the special occasion make-up page.

Special occasion or bridal make-up: what is the price difference?

Bridal make-up costs noticeably more than special occasion make-up: the median is PLN 475, compared with PLN 275. The difference comes from the scope of the service. For bridal make-up, make-up artists usually include a trial, longer-lasting cosmetics that can withstand tears and remain in place for many hours, and often morning travel on the wedding day and a touch-up during the reception.

What is the difference between daytime and special occasion make-up?

Daytime make-up is light make-up that evens out the complexion and enhances the features, while special occasion make-up is more dramatic and longer-lasting because it needs to look good throughout the evening and in flash photography. In price lists, daytime make-up tends to be at the lower end of the PLN 250 ‑ 315 range, and evening make-up at the upper end.

Special occasion make-up and occasional make-up are essentially the same service: the name depends on the salon. Evening make-up is one type of special occasion make-up, with more strongly defined eyes, darker eyeshadow and sometimes false lashes. An artistic or fantasy version, for example for a fancy-dress ball or photo shoot, costs the most, up to PLN 350.

How long does special occasion make-up take?

Special occasion make-up usually takes from 45 minutes to an hour, while an evening version with false lashes can take up to an hour and a half. Bridal make-up usually takes from an hour to an hour and a half, excluding the trial, which is booked separately several weeks in advance.

Allow an additional several minutes to discuss your expectations and select foundation shades. If you are also having your hair styled after your make-up, agree the order with the make-up artist and hairdresser: hairstyling usually comes first, followed by make-up, so it is not damaged while the hair is being styled.

How much does getting ready for an event cost: make-up, lashes, brows and nails?

Getting ready for an important event rarely involves make-up alone. Many people also have their brows, lashes and manicure done a few days beforehand. These are the prices of these services in our index:

We do not add these items together because few people have them all done at once. The practical choice depends on how long you want the result to last:

1. Brows are best done several days before the event. brow lamination costs around PLN 140 and lasts for several weeks. eyebrow henna is cheaper, at around PLN 40. The two methods are compared in the article brow lamination or powder henna.
2. Lashes should be done 2 to 3 days beforehand. eyelash extensions using the 1:1 method costs around PLN 180, while a lash lift for natural lashes costs around PLN 160. If you have eyelash extensions, the make-up artist does not need to apply false lashes.
3. Nails are best done a day or two beforehand. gel polish manicure usually costs PLN 110 ‑ 135.
4. Make-up should be done on the day of the event, preferably several hours beforehand.

A gel manicure is the only one of these services for which we already have prices from many cities: the median is PLN 105 in Kraków, PLN 110 in Warsaw and PLN 155 in Wrocław. What affects the price of make-up by a make-up artist?

The price of special occasion make-up depends mainly on the type of make-up, the make-up artist’s reputation and whether they travel to the client. These factors are reflected in the collected price lists:

1. Type of make-up. Daytime make-up is the cheapest, evening and party make-up costs more, and bridal make-up is the most expensive, at around PLN 475.
2. Experience and reputation. Make-up artists with a well-known portfolio and a calendar full of weddings charge more than those who are only beginning to build their client base.
3. City. Prices are higher in large cities, although the differences are smaller for special occasion make-up than for bridal make-up.
4. Travel. A visit to a home, hotel or wedding venue carries a separate charge based on distance.
5. Extras. False lashes, glitter, artistic elements or hairstyling increase the price if they are not included in the package.

Is professional make-up worth it?

Professional make-up is worth it when longevity and photographs matter to you. For PLN 275, you get professional cosmetics that you do not need to buy for a single evening, foundation matched to your complexion and the lighting, and a technique that can withstand dancing and remain in place for many hours. At an event with a photographer, the difference between make-up done at home and make-up applied by a professional is clearly visible in the photographs.

If you prefer to do your own make-up, a good compromise is to book a single make-up lesson with a make-up artist before an important event. Some salons combine it with a make-up application, and the knowledge remains useful for future occasions.

How can you avoid overpaying for special occasion make-up?

• Ask what is included in the price. False lashes, travel and a touch-up during the event are the most common additional charges.
• Book an appointment at the salon if you can. Make-up at the artist’s salon costs PLN 275, while a home visit costs extra.
• Ask about a package for several people. If the mother, sister and maid of honour book together, the make-up artist only has to make one journey, making it easier to secure a discount.
• Look through the portfolio. Photographs of make-up in daylight tell you more than filtered images.
• Arrive with clean, moisturised skin and mention any cosmetic allergies. Make-up looks best in photographs when it does not have to conceal the effects of a sleepless night.
