Urine culture: how long results take and how much it costs in 2026
indekscen.pl editorial team · published 30 September 2026 · prices according to the 5 October 2026 index
Urine culture results usually take 2 to 3 working days because the bacteria need time to grow on a culture medium. A private urine culture most often costs PLN 48 (typically PLN 34 ‑ 53), and an antibiotic susceptibility test may be included in the price or charged separately. The test is free with a doctor's referral.
At a glance (as at 5 October 2026)
- Urine culture results usually take 2 to 3 working days, but a positive result with an antibiotic susceptibility test may take longer.
- A private urine culture typically costs PLN 34 ‑ 53, according to 6 laboratory and clinic price lists collected by indekscen.pl.
- The cheapest urine culture in our sources costs PLN 20, while the most expensive costs PLN 77.
- A general urine test is cheaper than a culture: the median is PLN 19.

A urine culture is one of the tests most frequently ordered for symptoms of a urinary tract infection: burning, frequent urination and lower abdominal pain. Patients usually ask two questions: how long results take and how much a private test costs. We answer both based on laboratory and clinic price lists, with a source for every price shown on the service page.
How long do urine culture results take?
Urine culture results usually take 2 to 3 working days from the time the sample is delivered to the laboratory. This is the timeframe given in the facility price lists from which we collect prices. A culture cannot be completed on the same day because the bacteria need time to grow on a culture medium in an incubator.
The waiting time depends mainly on what the test finds:
- A negative result (no bacterial growth) may be ready the quickest, often after 1 to 2 days.
- A positive result requires the bacteria to be identified, which adds another day.
- A positive result with an antibiotic susceptibility test takes the longest because the laboratory also checks which antibiotics the bacteria are susceptible to. This may take 3 to 5 days.
- Weekends and public holidays extend the wait because some laboratories do not assess cultures on non-working days.
If the sample reaches the laboratory on Friday afternoon, the result may not be available until Wednesday. If you have severe symptoms, do not wait for the result before deciding whether to see a doctor: the doctor will decide whether to begin treatment before the result is available.
How much does a private urine culture cost?
A private urine culture most often costs PLN 48, and half of the price lists fall within the range of PLN 34 ‑ 53, according to 6 price lists collected by indekscen.pl. The cheapest options, from PLN 20, are offered by hospital laboratories, while the most expensive, up to PLN 77, are offered by private clinics.
Here is how a urine culture compares with other basic laboratory tests:
| Service | Median | Typically | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| Urine culture | PLN 48 | PLN 34 ‑ 53 | 6 |
| Urine test | PLN 19 | PLN 18 ‑ 19 | 2 |
| Full blood count | PLN 25 | PLN 23 ‑ 29 | 5 |
| Fasting glucose test | PLN 14 | PLN 14 ‑ 17 | 3 |
Median and typical range from public price lists, as at 5 October 2026. Each price includes a source and quotation on the service page.
A culture is several times more expensive than a general urine test because it requires bacteria to be grown and examined by a microbiologist, rather than simply analysing the sample in a machine. When an infection is suspected, doctors often order both tests together. We discuss blood test prices in the article full blood count with differential: price.
What is the difference between a urine culture and a general urine test?
A general urine test, costing around PLN 19, assesses the urine’s appearance, chemical composition and sediment, and the result is usually ready on the same day or the following day. A urine culture, typically costing PLN 34 ‑ 53, answers different questions: whether bacteria are growing in the urine, what type they are and how many there are.
| Feature | General urine test | Urine culture |
|---|---|---|
| What it shows | urine composition and sediment, such as white blood cells, protein and glucose | the type and quantity of bacteria or fungi |
| Time to result | usually within 1 day | usually 2 to 3 working days |
| Container | standard urine container | sterile culture container |
| Private price | around PLN 19 | typically PLN 34 ‑ 53 |
A general urine test is often the first step: if it indicates inflammation, the doctor orders a culture to confirm the infection and select the appropriate treatment. For recurrent infections, during pregnancy or after antibiotic treatment, doctors may order a culture straight away or as a follow-up test.
How much does a urine culture with an antibiotic susceptibility test cost?
At some facilities, a urine culture with an antibiotic susceptibility test costs the same as the culture alone, usually PLN 34 ‑ 53, because the susceptibility test is included when the result is positive. At other laboratories, the susceptibility test is charged separately and added only if the culture detects bacteria.
Before the test, ask at the sample collection point:
- whether the antibiotic susceptibility test is included in the price if the result is positive,
- whether the test covers fungi or only bacteria,
- when the result will be available and whether you can access it online.
If the antibiotic susceptibility test is charged separately, do not decline it after a positive result without consulting a doctor. This test helps identify an antibiotic that will work against the specific bacteria.
Can you have a urine culture without a referral?
Yes, you can have a private urine culture without a referral at any laboratory, usually paying PLN 34 ‑ 53. The test is free through the NFZ with a referral from a GP.
Having the test without a referral makes sense if you want the result to be ready for your doctor’s appointment. Interpreting the result yourself is not a good idea: a doctor must determine whether the number of bacteria indicates an infection and how it should be treated.
How should you prepare for a urine culture and which container should you buy?
A urine culture requires a sterile container marked as suitable for cultures, available from a pharmacy or sample collection point. A standard container for a general urine test is unsuitable because it is not sterile and the result may show bacteria introduced from outside the body.
How to collect urine for a culture:
- Collect your first urine of the morning, preferably after a night without urinating.
- Wash the genital area thoroughly with water, without using strong disinfectants.
- Pass the first portion of urine into the toilet, then collect a midstream urine sample in the container.
- Do not touch the inside of the container or the inside of the lid.
- Deliver the sample to the laboratory as soon as possible, usually within 2 hours. If this is not possible, ask the laboratory whether it can be stored in the fridge.
If the laboratory provides its own containers or containers with a culture medium, follow the instructions supplied with the container. If you are taking an antibiotic, ask your doctor when to have the test because the medicine may distort the result.
How much urine is needed for a culture?
A few millilitres of urine is enough for a culture. In practice, fill the container to about one-third or one-half. It does not need to be full, and an overfilled container is more likely to become contaminated when the lid is screwed on. The amount of urine does not affect the price of the test.
What does a negative urine culture mean?
A negative urine culture means that no bacteria or fungi were grown from the sample in quantities indicating an infection. If the symptoms persist, the doctor may order a repeat test or other tests. Always discuss the result with the doctor who ordered the test.
How can you avoid overpaying for a urine culture?
- Check hospital laboratories. In our sources, hospitals have the lowest prices, starting from PLN 20.
- Ask about a referral. If you have symptoms of an infection, your GP will usually issue a referral and the test will be free.
- Ask about the antibiotic susceptibility test before paying so that you are not faced with an unexpected additional charge when collecting the result.
- Buy the correct container. An incorrectly collected sample means repeating the test and paying another bill.

Do you need to fast before a urine culture?

How much does a urine culture cost at a large laboratory chain?
Ceny w sieciach laboratoriów mieszczą się zwykle w tym samym przedziale co w przychodniach, czyli PLN 34 ‑ 53. Najtańsze bywają laboratoria szpitalne, gdzie posiew kosztuje od PLN 20.
Is a urine culture free through the NFZ?
