- Labour for replacing discs and pads on one axle is typically PLN 350 ‑ 750.
- Replacing discs and pads on one axle, including parts, costs around PLN 790, depending on the car model.
- The median labour cost for replacing brake pads is based on 14 garage price lists collected by indekscen.pl.

Brake replacement is one of those repairs where the bill can vary severalfold between two garages just around the corner from each other. The reason is simple: sometimes only the pads on one axle are being replaced, sometimes the discs and pads at the front and rear, and sometimes the price includes parts while at other times it covers labour only. We break down the cost using garage price lists to make offers easy to compare.
How much does it cost to replace brake pads and discs?
Replacing brake discs and pads on one axle most often costs PLN 450 for labour alone, according to 3 price lists collected by indekscen.pl, with half of the price lists falling within the PLN 350 ‑ 750 range. Including parts, depending on the car model, the bill for one axle is around PLN 790. The most expensive offers, up to PLN 1,500, cover a comprehensive brake service including brake fluid replacement.
For comparison, brake pad replacement without discs, on one axle, has a median labour cost of PLN 145. The difference is because replacing the discs requires the mechanic to remove the calliper and carrier, clean the hub and tighten everything to the correct torque.

How much does it cost to replace front and rear brake pads?
Replacing the front and rear brake pads costs around PLN 275 for labour alone, roughly the same as replacing them on two axles separately. You also need two sets of pads. If you are replacing the discs on both axles as well, labour rises to around PLN 900 (typically PLN 700 ‑ 1,500).
Here is a comparison of the repair options based on garage price lists:
| Repair scope | Labour | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Pads, one axle | PLN 105 ‑ 170 | plus one set of pads |
| Pads, front and rear | around PLN 275 | plus two sets of pads |
| Discs and pads, one axle | PLN 350 ‑ 750 | plus discs and pads |
| Discs and pads, one axle, including parts | around PLN 790 | depending on the car model |
| Discs and pads, both axles | around PLN 900 | plus parts for both axles |
How much does it cost to replace rear brake pads?
Replacing the rear brake pads usually costs the same as replacing the front ones, with labour at PLN 105 ‑ 170, provided the car has a conventional cable-operated handbrake. It costs more in cars with an electronic parking brake (a button instead of a lever): the mechanic must connect a diagnostic tester and put the callipers into service mode, so the price is closer to the upper end of the range, up to PLN 300.
In some cars, pads can be replaced with an electronic handbrake without a diagnostic computer, for example by activating service mode using a combination of buttons, but it is easy to damage the calliper motor. If you are unsure, take the car to a garage with a diagnostic tester.
Which brake pads wear out faster: front or rear?
Front brake pads wear out faster, usually about twice as fast. When braking, the car’s weight shifts forwards and the front axle does most of the work. Rear pads are therefore usually replaced every second time the front pads are replaced. Some cars with electronic stability control are an exception, as the system applies the rear brakes more strongly during braking.
How often should brake pads and discs be replaced?
Front brake pads are usually replaced every 30 000 to 60 000 km and rear pads less often, while discs are replaced roughly every second pad change, or every 60 000 to 120 000 km. These are only guidelines. In town, where you brake constantly, pads wear out much faster than when driving longer distances.
Signs that the pads need replacing:
- Squealing when braking. Many pads have a metal wear indicator that squeals when the friction material is nearly worn out.
- A warning light on the dashboard. Some cars have an electronic brake pad wear sensor.
- Longer braking distance and a soft pedal.
- Metal-on-metal grinding. This means the friction material has worn away and the pad is damaging the disc. You will then have to pay for discs as well as pads.
It is worth checking pad thickness whenever the tyres are changed, as the wheels are already off. Read more about the cost of a seasonal garage visit in our article on how much tyre replacement costs.
Should brake discs and pads be replaced together?
Discs and pads do not always need to be replaced together, but new discs must always be fitted with new pads. The reverse does not apply: when replacing the pads alone, the discs can remain if they are thicker than the minimum specification and have no lip or scoring. The mechanic should measure the discs with a calliper and provide the result.
Do not let a garage replace the discs ‘while they are at it’ without measuring them. The difference in the bill is the cost of two discs and higher labour charges: PLN 450 instead of PLN 145 per axle.
How long does it take to replace brake pads and discs?
Replacing brake pads alone on one axle usually takes between 30 minutes and an hour. Replacing discs and pads on one axle takes between one and two hours, and replacing them on both axles takes between two and three hours. It takes longer if bolts have seized because of corrosion or the brake fluid also needs replacing.
How much does brake pad replacement cost in different cities?
We currently have local brake pad replacement prices for only 3 cities, so treat them as a guide. In Poznań the median is PLN 145, while in Rybnik it is PLN 175. Local price lists often quote a full hour of labour, which is why these prices are higher than the national median.
| City | Median | Typically | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dąbrowa Górnicza | PLN 140 | PLN 140 ‑ 145 | 2 |
| Poznań | PLN 145 | PLN 140 ‑ 145 | 2 |
| Rybnik | PLN 175 | PLN 140 ‑ 180 | 3 |

How can you avoid overpaying for brake repairs?
- Ask for separate prices for labour and parts. The garage may fit parts you supply, but will not provide a warranty for them.
- Ask for the discs to be measured and for the old pads to be shown to you after replacement.
- Check whether cleaning the calliper guide pins is included in the price. A seized calliper shortens the life of new pads.
- Combine visits. Having the brakes checked during a tyre change or inspection saves time and an extra journey. We cover inspection costs in our article on how much a car inspection costs.
Which pads and discs should you choose to avoid paying twice?
Parts often account for more of the bill than labour, and their price mainly depends on the car model and the manufacturer’s market segment. The cheapest unbranded pads may be tempting, but they wear faster, produce more dust and can be noisy. Pads from established manufacturers, which are also fitted at the factory, cost more but usually last longer and do not damage the discs.
For discs, it is worth choosing a version with an anti-corrosion coating on the non-friction surfaces, as discs on a car parked outdoors quickly become covered in rust. Grooved and drilled discs make sense on sports cars, but for an ordinary car they are mainly an extra expense. A practical rule is to use pads and discs from the same brand and always replace them in pairs across the entire axle, never on just one wheel.

How much does a mechanic charge to replace brake pads?
Mediana robocizny za wymianę klocków na jednej osi to PLN 145, a najtańsze warsztaty biorą od PLN 50. Klocki kupuje się osobno.
How much does it cost to replace all four brake pads?
Cztery klocki to jedna oś, bo na każde koło przypadają dwa. Robocizna kosztuje wtedy zwykle PLN 105 ‑ 170. Komplet na obu osiach, czyli osiem klocków, to około PLN 275.
Can you replace the discs without replacing the pads?
How should you drive after replacing the brake pads?
Przez pierwsze 200 do 300 km unikaj gwałtownego hamowania, żeby klocki dotarły się do tarcz. Po wymianie kilka razy wciśnij pedał hamulca na postoju, zanim ruszysz.
How can you tell when a brake disc needs replacing?
Tarcza jest do wymiany, gdy ma rant na krawędzi, głębokie rysy albo przy hamowaniu czuć bicie na pedale lub kierownicy. O wymianie decyduje minimalna grubość podana na tarczy.
