Clutch and dual-mass flywheel replacement: 2026 cost, labour and prices by city
indekscen.pl editorial team · published 30 September 2026 · prices according to the 5 October 2026 index
Replacing the clutch together with the dual-mass flywheel in Poland most often costs around PLN 5,000, including parts and labour. Replacing the clutch alone, without the flywheel, has a median price of PLN 645, and half of the prices fall within PLN 545 ‑ 825. The difference is mainly due to the price of the dual-mass flywheel, as both jobs require the gearbox to be removed.
At a glance (as at 5 October 2026)
- Replacing the clutch and dual-mass flywheel usually costs around PLN 5,000, including parts.
- Replacing just the clutch in a passenger car typically costs PLN 545 ‑ 825, with a median of PLN 645.
- The cheapest clutch replacement in a small car starts at PLN 250, while the cost for premium cars with a dual-mass flywheel can reach PLN 6,000.
- The median clutch replacement price is based on 32 price lists and articles collected by indekscen.pl.

Clutch replacement is one of the more expensive repairs on a car with a manual gearbox, and the bill depends mainly on one part: the dual-mass flywheel. In cars without one, the cost is usually limited to several hours of a mechanic’s labour and a clutch kit, but with a dual-mass flywheel it increases severalfold. We collected prices from workshop price lists and motoring articles to show what makes up the cost and how to avoid overpaying.
How much does it cost to replace a clutch and dual-mass flywheel?
Replacing the clutch together with the dual-mass flywheel most often costs around PLN 5,000, including the clutch kit, a new dual-mass flywheel and labour. This is several times more than clutch replacement without the flywheel, which usually costs PLN 645, according to 32 price lists and articles collected by indekscen.pl.
| Clutch replacement: option | Median | Typically | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic service | PLN 645 | PLN 545 ‑ 825 | 32 |
| with a dual-mass flywheel | PLN 5,000 | PLN 4,500 ‑ 5,500 | 3 |

Why is the difference so large? The dual-mass flywheel itself is often the most expensive part of the entire job, costing more than the clutch plate, pressure plate and release bearing combined. Labour costs rise less because the gearbox has to be removed anyway, and the dual-mass flywheel is bolted to the crankshaft directly behind it.
Does the dual-mass flywheel need to be replaced with the clutch?
The dual-mass flywheel does not need replacing every time the clutch is replaced, but it should be checked while the gearbox is removed. The mechanic measures the play and the angle through which the two masses rotate relative to each other. If the flywheel is close to its wear limit, replacing it at the same time avoids paying again for the labour involved in removing the gearbox.
If the dual-mass flywheel is in good condition, there is no reason to pay for a new one. Ask the workshop for the measurement results and to see the old part. Be wary of kits that replace the dual-mass flywheel with a single-mass flywheel: they are cheaper, but they change how smoothly the engine runs, cause more vibration and are not approved by every manufacturer.
How much does clutch replacement cost: labour and parts
The cost of clutch replacement consists of two items: the clutch kit (clutch plate, pressure plate and release bearing) and labour, meaning removal and refitting of the gearbox. The median of PLN 645 includes both items for a typical passenger car.
Labour depends on the car’s design and ranges from several to more than a dozen hours. In a small city car with a transversely mounted engine, the job usually takes several hours. In four-wheel-drive cars or those with a cramped engine bay, the mechanic may sometimes need to lower the subframe or part of the suspension, so the job takes longer.
Factors affecting the price:
- Whether the car has a dual-mass flywheel and whether it needs replacing.
- The car’s model and segment. Small city cars are the cheapest, starting at PLN 250, while premium cars are the most expensive, reaching PLN 6,000.
- Labour time resulting from the car’s design.
- Additional parts: concentric slave cylinder, gearbox oil and crankshaft seal.
- City and workshop. Hourly labour rates vary between cities.

Prices in these cities are clearly below the national median because local workshop price lists usually cover the service alone, without the clutch kit. Treat them as an indicative labour cost and add the price of parts. When comparing quotes, always ask for the total price: parts, labour and fluids.
How long does it take to replace a clutch and dual-mass flywheel?
Clutch replacement in a typical passenger car usually takes 4 to 8 working hours, so the workshop will generally return the car the following day. Replacing the clutch and dual-mass flywheel takes only slightly longer because the gearbox has to be removed anyway. In four-wheel-drive cars and large SUVs, the labour can take more than a dozen hours.
How often should a clutch be replaced?
A clutch usually lasts between 100 000 and 200 000 km, but its lifespan depends primarily on driving style. Driving in traffic jams, pulling away at high revs, resting your foot on the pedal and towing a trailer can reduce the life of the clutch plate by as much as half. In diesel cars, the dual-mass flywheel often wears out before the clutch plate, especially when driving at low revs.
How to extend clutch life:
- do not rest your foot on the clutch pedal while driving,
- select neutral at traffic lights instead of holding the clutch pedal down,
- pull away smoothly, without high revs,
- in a diesel car, do not drive in the highest gear at very low revs, as this damages the dual-mass flywheel.
Clutch replacement in a DSG gearbox: what is different?
Dual-clutch gearboxes, such as the seven-speed DSG (DQ200), have a pair of clutches and require computer-assisted adaptation after replacement. It is therefore worth having the work done by a workshop specialising in automatic gearboxes. We do not yet have a separate median for DSG clutch replacement in the index, but parts and labour usually cost more than for a manual gearbox.
What else should be replaced when replacing the clutch?
The most expensive part of clutch replacement is the labour involved in removing the gearbox, so everything located behind it should be checked at the same time. Replacing any of these parts later means paying for the same labour again.
- Concentric slave cylinder. It is located inside the gearbox bell housing. If it starts leaking, the fluid will ruin the new clutch plate, and the repair will require removing the gearbox again.
- Gearbox-side crankshaft seal. It is inexpensive, but an oil leak onto the clutch plate means the plate will need replacing.
- Gearbox oil. With the gearbox removed, changing the oil adds little to the bill.
- Clutch shaft pilot bearing, if the car has one.
- Clutch cable or hydraulic lines, if they are old and stiff.
Before work begins, ask the mechanic which of these components will be inspected and request a phone call with a quote before anything is added to the scope of work.
Is clutch replacement worthwhile in an old car?
Clutch replacement is worthwhile when the rest of the car is in good condition: the engine is not burning oil, the body is not badly rusted and the gearbox runs quietly. A cost of around PLN 645 then pays off over the following years of use. However, for an older diesel car with a dual-mass flywheel, a bill of around PLN 5,000 may approach the car’s value. In that case, compare the quote with the market price of a similar car before deciding.
How can you avoid overpaying for clutch replacement?
- Ask for a written quote itemising parts and labour.
- Ask whether the price includes checking the dual-mass flywheel and replacing the slave cylinder.
- Do not replace the dual-mass flywheel “just in case” if the measurements show that it is in good condition.
- Compare several workshops in your city: labour costs vary considerably.
