A Doppler ultrasound is a test for which NFZ waiting times can sometimes be several months, so many people have it done privately. However, price lists can be confusing: some quote a price for one area, others for one leg, and others include a medical consultation. We have collected prices from publicly available facility price lists to make offers easy to compare. We are not a substitute for medical advice: your doctor decides which blood vessels need to be examined.
How much does a private Doppler ultrasound cost?
A private Doppler ultrasound most commonly costs PLN 280 for one area of the body, based on 7 price lists collected by indekscen.pl, while half of facilities charge between PLN 240 ‑ 300. The cheapest offers start at PLN 150, while the most expensive reach PLN 500. Details and verbatim quotations from the price lists are available at vascular Doppler ultrasound.
One area may mean, for example, the carotid and vertebral arteries, abdominal aorta, abdominal arteries or blood vessels in one limb. The price increases when the scan covers several areas at once or both veins and arteries.
The price of a Doppler ultrasound depends on:
- Area examined. A Doppler scan of the abdominal arteries can be more expensive than a scan of the neck vessels.
- Number of limbs. One leg is one item on a price list, while both legs usually count as two or are covered by a more expensive package.
- Veins, arteries or both. A full assessment of the venous and arterial systems in the limbs takes longer and costs more.
- Consultation included in the price. Some facilities include a discussion with the doctor, while others charge for it separately.
- City and facility. Vascular surgeons’ practices in large cities are usually more expensive than ultrasound clinics.
How much does a leg Doppler scan cost: one or two limbs?
A private Doppler ultrasound of the blood vessels in one leg most commonly costs PLN 190, typically PLN 170 ‑ 220, while limb ultrasound (arm or leg) in the collected price lists does not exceed PLN 230. Scanning both legs, charged as two limbs, costs around PLN 380 (typically PLN 340 ‑ 440). Some facilities offer a cheaper package for both limbs, so it is worth asking for the total price instead of multiplying the listed price.
For varicose veins, doctors usually order a venous Doppler scan, while for calf pain when walking they order an arterial Doppler scan. When booking, ask which vessels are included in the price, as examining the veins and arteries in both legs may in practice involve several separate items.
Doppler scans of the neck, abdomen and legs: how do their prices compare with other tests?
A Doppler ultrasound costs more than a standard abdominal ultrasound because, in addition to imaging the organs, the doctor assesses blood flow through the vessels, which requires more time and expertise. These are the median prices in the collected price lists:
| Test or appointment | Median | Typical range | What it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vascular Doppler ultrasound, one area | PLN 280 | PLN 240 ‑ 300 | e.g. carotid arteries or abdominal aorta |
| Doppler ultrasound of one limb | PLN 190 | PLN 170 ‑ 220 | veins or arteries in one leg or arm |
| Abdominal ultrasound | PLN 200 | PLN 191 ‑ 250 | abdominal organs, without blood flow assessment |
| Echocardiogram | PLN 290 | PLN 280 ‑ 315 | structure and function of the heart |
| Angiologist appointment, without ultrasound | PLN 250 | PLN 250 ‑ 325 | medical history, examination and recommendations |
| Service | Median | Typically | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vascular Doppler ultrasound | PLN 280 | PLN 240 ‑ 300 | 7 |
| Limb ultrasound (arm or leg) | PLN 190 | PLN 170 ‑ 220 | 5 |
| Abdominal ultrasound | PLN 200 | PLN 191 ‑ 250 | 5 |
| Echocardiogram | PLN 290 | PLN 280 ‑ 315 | 4 |
| Angiologist (vascular specialist) appointment | PLN 250 | PLN 250 ‑ 325 | 3 |

An echocardiogram also uses the Doppler effect to assess blood flow through the valves, but it is a separate heart examination. Read more in our article echocardiogram: cost.
Can you have a Doppler scan without a referral?
You can have a private Doppler scan without a referral. Simply book an appointment at an ultrasound clinic and pay, usually PLN 240 ‑ 300 per area. A referral is required only if you want the test free of charge through the NFZ. Even so, it is worth bringing information about why the scan is being performed, as this determines which vessels the doctor will examine.
If you do not know which area should be examined, it is better to start with a specialist appointment than to pay for a scan that will not answer your doctor’s question.
Which doctor should you see for a venous Doppler scan, and how much does the appointment cost?
A venous Doppler scan is usually ordered by an angiologist or vascular surgeon, and a private angiologist consultation most commonly costs PLN 250. The median price of an angiologist appointment including a Doppler ultrasound is PLN 450, while surgeon appointment usually costs PLN 300 ‑ 330 without a scan.
An appointment and scan in the same practice offers two advantages: the doctor examines the vessels personally and can decide on treatment immediately, while the combined price can be lower than booking angiologist (vascular specialist) appointment and a separate scan at an ultrasound clinic. Referrals for carotid artery scans are often issued by a neurologist or cardiologist, while abdominal aorta scans may also be ordered by a GP, cardiologist or vascular surgeon.
How long does a Doppler scan take, and what does it involve?
A Doppler scan of one area usually takes 15 to 30 minutes, while scanning the veins and arteries in both legs can take from 40 minutes to an hour. The doctor applies an ultrasound probe with gel to the skin over the vessels and observes a colour image of the blood flow and velocity graphs on the monitor. The scan is painless and does not involve radiation.
During a venous Doppler scan of the legs, part of the examination is performed while standing because this position makes backward blood flow in insufficient veins easier to see. The doctor may ask you to tense your abdominal muscles or cough.
How should you prepare for a Doppler scan?
Most Doppler scans require no special preparation. The exception is a Doppler scan of the abdominal vessels, which is performed on an empty stomach. A practical checklist:
- Doppler scan of the abdomen and aorta: usually no food for 6 to 8 hours. The doctor may sometimes recommend an easily digestible diet the day before. The facility will provide details when you book.
- Leg Doppler scan: wear comfortable clothing that is easy to remove from the waist down and do not wear compression tights on the day of the scan.
- Carotid artery Doppler scan: do not wear necklaces or a polo neck.
- Always: bring previous test results and a list of your medications. Do not stop taking medication without your doctor’s approval.
How can you avoid overpaying for a Doppler ultrasound?
- Ask for the total price. One item on a price list may mean one leg, one side of the neck or veins only.
- Check whether the price includes a report and consultation. A written report is standard, but a discussion with the doctor is not always included.
- Compare an ultrasound clinic with a specialist’s practice. An ultrasound clinic may be cheaper, but if you have varicose veins, you will still need to see a doctor who will decide on treatment.
- Ask about a package. An angiologist appointment including a scan for around PLN 450 may cost less than a separate consultation and scan.
- Check NFZ waiting times. For non-urgent diagnostics with a referral, you can look for a shorter waiting list at another facility, for example using https://terminyleczenia.nfz.gov.pl/.
We are still collecting city-level prices for Doppler ultrasounds, so this article presents national median prices. Prices near the upper end of the range are more common in large cities than in smaller ones.

Frequently asked questions
Is a venous Doppler scan available through the NFZ?
Can a Doppler scan detect thrombosis?
Can a GP issue a referral for a Doppler scan?
Skierowanie na USG Doppler wystawia najczęściej specjalista, na przykład angiolog, chirurg naczyniowy, kardiolog albo neurolog. Czy w Twojej sytuacji skierowanie wystawi lekarz rodzinny, zapytaj w przychodni. Bez skierowania badanie kosztuje prywatnie około PLN 280.
How much does a carotid artery Doppler scan cost?
USG Doppler tętnic szyjnych i kręgowych to jeden obszar badania, więc kosztuje prywatnie zwykle PLN 240 ‑ 300. W cennikach bywa oznaczone skrótem USG TSiK.
Does the Doppler scan price include a medical consultation?
Nie zawsze. Część placówek podaje cenę samego badania z opisem, a konsultację liczy osobno. Konsultacja u angiologa to mediana PLN 250, dlatego pakiet z badaniem za około PLN 450 bywa tańszy niż dwie osobne wizyty.
