Holter monitoring is one of the most commonly ordered heart tests, and privately it can be arranged quickly, often within a few days. Below, we show how much a private Holter ECG test costs, how its price compares with a standard ECG, an echocardiogram and a cardiologist appointment, and how to prepare. This is not a substitute for medical advice: a cardiologist or GP decides whether a test is needed and which type is appropriate.

How much does a private Holter ECG test cost?

Private Holter ECG monitoring most commonly costs PLN 270 for 24 hours of recording, according to 4 price lists collected by indekscen.pl, while half of offers fall within the PLN 185 ‑ 340 range. The cheapest facilities, particularly outside large cities, charge from PLN 100. The upper end, up to PLN 500, applies to 48 or 72-hour monitoring or a package with a cardiologist’s report.

The price depends on several factors:

  1. Recording time. 24 hours is standard, while 48 and 72 hours cost more.
  2. Number of device channels. A 12-channel Holter monitor provides a more detailed recording and can be more expensive.
  3. Results report. Some facilities include a cardiologist’s report in the price, while others do not and charge separately for the consultation.
  4. City and facility. Prices vary most widely in Warsaw, from among the lowest to the highest in the comparison.

A resting ECG takes a few minutes, so it only captures what happens in the consulting room. A Holter monitor records the heart during everyday activities, which is why a doctor may order it for symptoms that come and go. An echocardiogram is an ultrasound examination that shows the structure of the heart. You can read more in our article on echocardiogram costs.

How much does ambulatory blood pressure monitoring cost?

We do not yet include ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) as a separate service in the index, so we cannot provide its median price. An ambulatory blood pressure monitor is a different device: it uses a cuff on the arm to measure blood pressure every few dozen minutes over a full day. Facilities often list both tests next to each other in their price lists, so when booking, make sure which one is specified in your referral or doctor’s recommendation.

How long do you wear a Holter monitor?

A Holter ECG monitor is usually worn for 24 hours, or for 48 or 72 hours if ordered by a doctor. Longer-term event monitors may also be used for infrequent symptoms. The device is fitted at the facility and removed when the recording period ends, while the results and report are usually ready after a few days.

It is worth keeping a diary during the test: note the time, what you are doing (walking, climbing stairs, sleeping) and any symptoms you experience (palpitations, dizziness). The doctor will compare these entries with the recording.

How should you prepare for a Holter ECG test?

You do not need to fast or stop taking medication before a Holter ECG test unless your doctor advises otherwise. Preparation involves a few practical steps:

  1. Take a shower immediately before your appointment, as you will not be able to shower during the entire recording period.
  2. Do not apply lotion or body oil to your chest, so the electrodes adhere properly.
  3. Men with chest hair may be asked to shave the areas where the electrodes will be placed. Some facilities do this on site.
  4. Bring a list of your medications and previous ECG results, if you have them.
  5. Plan your return to the facility to have the device removed after 24, 48 or 72 hours.

Fitting the device takes several minutes. A nurse attaches several electrodes, connects the monitor and checks the recording.

What should you avoid while wearing a Holter monitor?

You must not get the device or electrodes wet, so you cannot shower or bathe during the recording period. Apart from that, the guidance is straightforward:

  • Live normally. The test is intended to show an ordinary day, so do not give up your usual activities.
  • Do not remove the electrodes or disconnect the wires. If anything comes loose, call the facility.
  • Avoid electric blankets, welding equipment and strong magnets, which can interfere with the recording.
  • Sleep in a position that does not pull on the wires. The monitor can be clipped to a belt or worn around the neck.

Wearing a bra with a Holter monitor

You can wear a bra with a Holter monitor, and many facilities even recommend it because it helps keep the wires in place. It is best to choose a soft, non-wired style that will not press against the electrodes. Wear a loose, front-opening top when you have the device fitted.

Can a GP arrange a Holter ECG test?

A GP can refer you for a Holter ECG test through the NFZ, and some primary care clinics perform it on site. In other cases, the referral is handled by a cardiology clinic or diagnostic centre. The test is free through the NFZ, but there is often a wait for an appointment, so many people choose a private facility at a cost of PLN 185 ‑ 340.

You can have private Holter monitoring without a referral, but it is still worth discussing the results with a doctor. If you do not have a cardiologist, a private appointment usually costs PLN 265 ‑ 310, and private cardiologist appointment may be included in a package with an ECG.

What conditions can a Holter ECG detect?

A Holter ECG helps a doctor detect abnormal heart rhythms that occur only intermittently: episodes of palpitations, pauses in the heartbeat, or a heart rate that is too slow or too fast. It can also show whether symptoms such as faintness and dizziness coincide with changes in the recording, and help assess medication or pacemaker function. Leave interpretation of the results to a cardiologist, as the same recording can mean different things in different people.

How can you avoid overpaying for Holter monitoring?

  • Ask whether the price includes a cardiologist’s report. A cheaper offer without a report may cost more once a consultation is added.
  • Check how many hours of recording are included and whether a longer recording, if recommended by your doctor, is included in the price.
  • Compare two or three facilities in your city: prices range from PLN 100 to PLN 500.
  • Ask about packages. A Holter monitor with an ECG and consultation can be cheaper than separate services.

If you are having a more comprehensive heart health check, you may also need a lipid profile, which we cover in our article on private cholesterol testing.
