A uric acid test is one of the cheaper and simpler blood tests, as well as one of those people ask about most often when they have joint pain or kidney stones, or are changing their diet. We collected prices from laboratory price lists and compared them with tests that doctors often order together with uric acid. This article covers costs and preparation. Discuss what your result means with your doctor.
How much does a blood uric acid test cost?
A blood uric acid test most commonly costs PLN 27, according to 3 laboratory price lists collected by indekscen.pl, with half of the prices falling within the PLN 21 ‑ 27 range. The lowest price found is PLN 15.30, and the highest is PLN 37. Sources with quotations are available on the uric acid test page.
The price includes taking a blood sample and measuring the serum uric acid concentration. Price differences mainly depend on the laboratory chain and the specific collection point. The same chain may charge different prices in different cities, and ordering online can be cheaper than paying on site.
What sample is used for a uric acid test?
A uric acid test uses venous blood taken from a vein in the crook of the elbow, and the laboratory measures its concentration in the serum. It is a routine blood draw, like the one used for a full blood count, and takes a few minutes. Uric acid can also be measured in urine, most commonly using a 24-hour urine collection, but this is a separate, less frequently ordered test, and we do not collect prices for this version.
Do you need to fast before a uric acid test?
It is recommended that a uric acid test be performed in the morning while fasting, usually 8 to 12 hours after the last meal. Preparing for a uric acid test is simple:
- Eat light meals the day before and avoid large portions of meat, offal and seafood.
- Do not drink alcohol for 24 hours before the test, as it may raise the result.
- Avoid strenuous exercise on the day before the blood draw.
- Drink only water in the morning. Avoid coffee and sweetened drinks until after the blood draw.
- Take medication as advised by your doctor. Some medicines affect the result, so tell the doctor ordering the test about them.
If you are also having your glucose or cholesterol tested, you will need to fast anyway, so it is worth having all the tests done with a single blood draw.
When is uric acid tested?
Uric acid is most commonly tested when gout or kidney stones are suspected, when monitoring treatment to lower uric acid, and during routine check-ups for people with hypertension, diabetes or kidney disease. A doctor may also order it for sudden joint pain and swelling. The test itself is inexpensive, but the result must be interpreted in context. A high result without symptoms does not always indicate a disease, while a normal result does not rule out gout during an attack.
Can a full blood count detect gout?
A full blood count cannot detect gout because it does not measure uric acid. It shows red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Uric acid must be ordered as a separate test. A full blood count usually costs PLN 23 ‑ 29 and, together with a uric acid test, provides a more complete picture because a doctor assessing joint pain will often also want to check for inflammation, using cRP test, for example. You can read more about full blood counts in our article full blood count with differential: price, and about CRP in CRP: what is the test and how much does it cost?.
Which tests should be done together with a uric acid test?
A uric acid test is most commonly ordered together with kidney function, inflammation and metabolic tests because they can all be performed using a single blood sample. These are their prices at private laboratories:
| Service | Median | Typically | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uric acid test | PLN 27 | PLN 21 ‑ 27 | 3 |
| Full blood count | PLN 25 | PLN 23 ‑ 29 | 5 |
| CRP test | PLN 21 | PLN 20 ‑ 24 | 3 |
| Creatinine test | PLN 19 | PLN 17 ‑ 20 | 2 |
| Cholesterol test | PLN 15 | PLN 14 ‑ 21 | 3 |
| Fasting glucose test | PLN 14 | PLN 14 ‑ 17 | 3 |
Median and typical range from public price lists, as at 5 October 2026. Each price includes a source and quotation on the service page.
| Test | Typical price | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Uric acid | PLN 21 ‑ 27 | serum uric acid concentration |
| Creatinine | PLN 17 ‑ 20 | the function of the kidneys, which remove uric acid |
| CRP | PLN 20 ‑ 24 | inflammation, for example in cases of joint pain |
| Full blood count | PLN 23 ‑ 29 | blood cells and general health |
| Cholesterol | PLN 14 ‑ 21 | lipid metabolism |
| Fasting glucose | PLN 14 ‑ 17 | blood sugar level |
Laboratory chains also sell ready-made packages, such as kidney or gout screening packages. Before buying one, add up the prices of the individual tests at the same laboratory. Sometimes a package is cheaper, while in other cases it includes tests that your doctor did not order. You can read more about metabolic tests in our articles private cholesterol testing and fasting glucose test.
How can you check uric acid at home?
Uric acid can be checked at home using a meter with test strips, similar to a blood glucose meter, and a drop of blood from a finger. These devices are available from pharmacies and medical supply shops, often as multi-parameter meters measuring glucose, cholesterol and uric acid. A test-strip result is indicative and is mainly useful for monitoring between medical appointments. Diagnosis and treatment monitoring require a laboratory test, which usually costs PLN 21 ‑ 27.
How often should uric acid be tested, and how much does it cost per year?
A doctor determines how often uric acid should be tested. Healthy people usually have it checked as part of routine blood tests, while those being treated for gout or kidney stones are tested more frequently, for example every few months at the start of treatment. At the median price, four private tests a year will cost around PLN 110, typically PLN 80 ‑ 110. For monitoring during long-term treatment, it is worth asking your doctor for a referral, as the test will then be free.
If you are changing your diet to lower uric acid, another test after a few weeks will show whether the changes are working. A diet plan prepared with a dietitian is a separate expense, usually PLN 205 ‑ 275 for the first consultation.
How much does a uric acid test cost under the NFZ?
A uric acid test is free under the NFZ if it is ordered by a doctor, such as a GP, as part of tests performed through a clinic. Without a referral, you will pay for it at a private laboratory, usually PLN 21 ‑ 27. A private specialist appointment is a much greater expense. A consultation with a nephrologist usually costs PLN 240 ‑ 280, so if you only need monitoring tests, it is worth starting with your GP.
How can you avoid overpaying for a uric acid test?
- Compare prices online at two or three laboratory chains in your city. The difference between PLN 15.30 and PLN 37 for the same test is substantial.
- Check whether there is a separate blood collection fee. Some collection points add it to the cost of the first test.
- Have several tests done with a single blood draw, as the collection fee is charged only once.
- Look for online offers. Laboratory chains often reduce their prices for online purchases.
