How often should the V-belt be replaced? 2026 cost, symptoms and tensioner
indekscen.pl editorial team · published 30 September 2026 · prices according to the 5 October 2026 index
The V-belt, also known as the auxiliary belt, drives the alternator, power steering pump and air conditioning. It is usually replaced every 60 000 to 120 000 km or every few years, depending on the manufacturer's recommendations. V-belt replacement at a garage most often costs PLN 120 including the part (typically PLN 85 ‑ 300), while replacing a serpentine belt in newer cars costs around PLN 400.

- The V-belt is usually replaced every 60 000 to 120 000 km, and its condition should be checked at every service.
- V-belt replacement including the part usually costs PLN 85 ‑ 300 at a garage, with a median of PLN 120.
- Replacing a serpentine belt in newer cars costs around PLN 400 because access is more difficult.
- The cheapest garages replace a V-belt from PLN 30, while difficult access can increase the bill to PLN 500.
- The median V-belt replacement price is based on 5 garage price lists and articles collected by indekscen.pl.

The V-belt is a small, inexpensive part that drivers usually remember only when it starts squealing during start-up or the charging warning light comes on. We explain how often to replace it, how to spot wear and how much replacement costs according to garage price lists. We also explain how it differs from the timing belt, as the costs of these two repairs differ by an order of magnitude.
How often should the V-belt be replaced?
The V-belt is usually replaced every 60 000 to 120 000 km or every four to five years, depending on the model and the manufacturer’s recommendations in the service book. The belt is made of rubber, so it also ages when the car is rarely driven: heat, frost and oil cause it to crack. Its condition should therefore be checked at every service and oil change, rather than waiting until the mileage stated in the service book.
Some manufacturers do not specify a replacement interval for the auxiliary belt at all and instruct owners to replace it “depending on its condition”. In this case, the mechanic’s assessment is decisive. In many cars, the auxiliary belt is replaced at the same time as the timing belt because it has to be removed anyway. Read more in our article how often to replace the timing belt.
How much does V-belt replacement cost?
V-belt replacement at a garage most often costs PLN 120 including the part, according to 5 price lists and articles collected by indekscen.pl. Half of the prices fall within PLN 85 ‑ 300. The cheapest garages quote prices from PLN 30, but this usually covers labour only where access is easy. The most expensive cases, costing up to PLN 500, involve cars where the wheel, covers or an engine mount have to be removed.

V-belt replacement: labour cost
The labour cost of replacing a V-belt depends on the time required, which the garage charges at its hourly rate. Car mechanic's hourly labour rate at an independent garage has a median of PLN 175, while at an authorised service centre it is around PLN 465. The belt itself is inexpensive, so the costs of the part and labour are comparable in cars where access is easy. Where access is difficult, labour accounts for most of the bill. We compare the rates in our article mechanic’s hourly labour rate: independent garage or authorised service centre.
How long does V-belt replacement take?
V-belt replacement usually takes from 20 minutes to an hour. In older cars where the belt is exposed at the front of the engine, a mechanic can remove it in a few minutes by releasing the tensioner. In newer cars with transversely mounted engines, the right-hand wheel and wheel arch liner sometimes have to be removed, or the engine has to be supported, extending the job to one and a half or two hours. If the garage has a free bay, it can usually replace the belt while you wait, so it is worth booking a morning appointment and waiting on site.
How can you tell when the V-belt needs replacing?
The V-belt needs replacing if it squeals, has cracks across its ribs or is fraying at the edges. Symptoms to look out for include:
- Squealing during start-up, particularly in the morning, in damp conditions or when turning the steering wheel to full lock.
- Transverse cracks on the inside of the belt, visible when it is bent.
- Frayed edges and a shiny, worn surface.
- Battery charging warning light or poor charging when the belt slips.
- Heavier steering in cars with a hydraulic power steering pump.
The charging warning light can also indicate an alternator fault. Garages charge around PLN 240 for alternator refurbishment without removal, so before the garage recommends repairing the alternator, ask it to check the belt and tensioner. Find out more in our article alternator reconditioning with removal.
Does the tensioner need to be replaced with the V-belt?
The tensioner does not always need to be replaced with the V-belt, but it should be checked. An automatic spring-loaded tensioner wears at a similar rate to the belt: the pulley bearing starts to make noise and the spring weakens. Mechanics recommend replacing the tensioner and pulleys with every second belt replacement, or whenever a pulley has play or makes noise.
How much does it cost to replace the V-belt and tensioner? We do not have a separate median for a set including the tensioner, but the labour cost rises only slightly because the tensioner has to be released anyway. The price of the tensioner itself makes a bigger difference, as it is considerably more expensive than the belt. The total can therefore be closer to the upper limit of PLN 500.
Does the cost of V-belt replacement depend on the car model?
The cost of V-belt replacement depends more on the car model than the make, because the time required is determined by access to the belt. In popular petrol engines used in city cars, such as the Opel Corsa or Nissan Qashqai with a 1.6 petrol engine, the belt is usually easy to access and the bill falls within the lower part of the PLN 85 ‑ 300 range.
Diesels and large engines can cost more: in the Audi A6 C6 3.0 TDI, Toyota Avensis 2.0 D4D, Passat B5 1.9 TDI or Hyundai i30 1.6 CRDi, the belt runs over more pulleys, often with a vibration damper on the crankshaft pulley. The mechanic needs more time, and garages recommend replacing the tensioner and pulleys at the same time. The bill then approaches the serpentine belt price of around PLN 400, or the upper limit of PLN 500.
The most reliable way to find out the price for your car is to ask a garage and provide the VIN or the engine capacity and code. The garage can then check the labour time in its catalogue and identify the correct belt straight away.
V-belt and timing belt: what is the difference?
The V-belt drives the engine’s auxiliary systems, while the timing belt synchronises the crankshaft with the camshafts. If the V-belt snaps, the charging system, power steering and air conditioning stop working. If the timing belt snaps, it damages the valves in many engines and means the cylinder head has to be overhauled.
| Service | Median | Typically | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| V-belt replacement | PLN 120 | PLN 85 ‑ 300 | 5 |
| Timing belt replacement | PLN 1,750 | PLN 1,700 ‑ 1,950 | 7 |
| Alternator refurbishment | PLN 240 | PLN 205 ‑ 270 | 4 |
Median and typical range from public price lists, as at 5 October 2026. Each price includes a source and quotation on the service page.
The median price garages charge for timing belt replacement is PLN 1,750, several times the cost of a V-belt. If a garage quotes a price for “belt replacement” that is close to the cost of a timing belt replacement, ask which belt it means.
How can you avoid overpaying for V-belt replacement?
- Ask for the price with and without the part. Prices from PLN 30 usually cover labour only.
- Buy a belt with the correct specification (number of ribs and length), preferably using the VIN.
- Combine the replacement with other work. The auxiliary belt has to be removed anyway when replacing the timing belt or water pump.
- Do not ignore squealing. A snapped belt during a journey means recovery and a more expensive repair than planned replacement.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a mechanic charge to replace a V-belt?
Mechanik bierze za wymianę paska klinowego razem z częścią zwykle PLN 85 ‑ 300, a mediana to PLN 120. W prostych autach bywa taniej, od PLN 30.
Will a car start without a V-belt?
Silnik zwykle odpali, bo pasek klinowy nie steruje zaworami, ale nie ładuje się akumulator, nie działa wspomaganie i klimatyzacja, a w wielu autach także pompa wody. Jazda bez paska grozi przegrzaniem silnika, więc trzeba dojechać najkrótszą drogą do warsztatu albo wezwać lawetę.
Are the V-belt and timing belt the same thing?
Nie. Pasek klinowy napędza osprzęt silnika, a pasek rozrządu synchronizuje wałki. Wymiana rozrządu jest wielokrotnie droższa, mediana to PLN 1,750, i jego zerwanie może zniszczyć silnik.
Can I replace the V-belt myself?
W starszych autach z dobrym dostępem i ręcznym napinaczem wymiana jest prosta. W nowszych, z automatycznym napinaczem i ciasną komorą silnika, lepiej oddać auto do warsztatu, gdzie wymiana kosztuje zwykle PLN 85 ‑ 300.
