Alternator refurbishment: 2026 cost including removal and refitting
indekscen.pl editorial team · published 30 September 2026 · prices according to the 5 October 2026 index
In 2026, alternator refurbishment most often costs PLN 240 for the repair alone, while half of garages charge within the PLN 205 ‑ 270 range. The alternator also needs to be removed and refitted at a garage, with labour charged at an hourly rate whose median is PLN 175. Refurbishment is usually cheaper than a new alternator.
At a glance (as at 5 October 2026)
- Alternator refurbishment usually costs PLN 205 ‑ 270, with a median of PLN 240 based on garage price lists.
- The cheapest alternator refurbishment in the collected sources costs PLN 67, while the most expensive costs PLN 500.
- Removing and refitting an alternator usually takes 1 to 3 labour hours, while the typical hourly labour rate at an independent garage is PLN 150 ‑ 215.
- Computer diagnostics, which can help distinguish an alternator fault from a dead battery, costs around PLN 165.
- Starter motor refurbishment, another common car electrical repair, has a median price of PLN 425.

The battery warning light comes on while driving, the lights dim when the car is idling, and the engine barely starts in the morning: these are typical signs of a failing alternator. The repair bill has two parts, which garages quote separately: refurbishing the alternator itself and the mechanic’s labour to remove and refit it. We break down both costs using garage price lists and compare refurbishment with replacement.
How much does alternator refurbishment cost?
Alternator refurbishment most often costs PLN 240 for the repair alone, according to 4 sources collected by indekscen.pl. Half of the offers fall within the PLN 205 ‑ 270 range, the cheapest minor repair costs PLN 67, while the most expensive complete refurbishments cost up to PLN 500.
The price mainly depends on which components need replacing:
- Brushes and slip rings. The most common and cheapest fault: the alternator stops charging or charges inconsistently.
- Bearings. A humming or whining noise under the bonnet that increases with engine speed.
- Voltage regulator. Charging voltage that is too low or too high, or bulbs that keep blowing.
- Rectifier bridge (diodes), rotor or stator. The most expensive repairs; if a winding has burnt out, the garage may recommend replacing the entire alternator.
- Alternator overrunning pulley in diesel cars and some newer petrol cars, which often wears out together with the bearings.
A garage that quotes a price over the phone without inspecting the alternator will usually give the lower end of the range. You will receive a full quote once the component has been dismantled.

How much does alternator removal and refitting cost?
Removing and refitting an alternator usually takes 1 to 3 labour hours and is charged separately from the refurbishment itself. With a median rate of PLN 175 at an independent garage, one hour of labour typically costs PLN 150 ‑ 215, two hours around PLN 350, and three hours around PLN 530. At an authorised service centre, an hour of labour costs around PLN 465.
The labour time depends on the car model. In older cars with longitudinally mounted engines, the alternator is readily accessible and can be removed in 15 minutes. In many compact and diesel cars, the mechanic must remove covers, the belt and sometimes a wheel or suspension component. In some four-wheel-drive cars, the alternator is hidden deep beneath the manifold.
| Item on the bill | Typical price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Alternator refurbishment | PLN 205 ‑ 270 | depending on the parts replaced |
| Removal and refitting (1 labour hour) | PLN 150 ‑ 215 | straightforward cars |
| Removal and refitting (2 labour hours) | around PLN 350 | typical compact or diesel car |
| Computer diagnostics | PLN 150 ‑ 185 | when the symptoms are inconclusive |
| Auxiliary belt replacement | PLN 85 ‑ 300 | worth doing at the same time |
If you can remove the alternator yourself, you can take it to an automotive electrical workshop and pay only for the refurbishment. Many workshops also accept alternators by post.
Is alternator refurbishment worthwhile?
Refurbishing an alternator is worthwhile in most cars because the repair usually costs PLN 205 ‑ 270, while a new alternator from a reputable manufacturer is considerably more expensive, often several times as much. Our index does not include prices for new alternators because they depend on the car model, but you can easily check the difference at a parts retailer using the part number.
A new or factory-refurbished alternator makes sense when:
- the stator or rotor winding has burnt out and refurbishment would cost nearly as much as a new part,
- the casing is cracked or corroded,
- the car needs an alternator that communicates with the control unit (start‑stop system), and the workshop cannot obtain the required parts,
- time is important and a replacement is available immediately.
A third option is a factory-refurbished alternator sold on an exchange basis, with the old unit returned. It usually costs less than a new one and comes with a parts warranty.
How long does alternator refurbishment take?
Alternator refurbishment usually takes 1 to 3 working days, including the time needed to obtain parts. The workshop work itself takes a few hours, so repairs to popular models can be completed on the same day if the parts are in stock. It takes longer if a regulator or rectifier bridge must be ordered for a less common alternator.
It is worth asking whether the garage has a replacement alternator or can order the part in advance using its number. A car cannot run without an alternator, so the repair time also means time without your car.
How long will a refurbished alternator last?
A properly refurbished alternator with new bearings, brushes and a regulator will usually last about as long as the original, often tens of thousands of kilometres. The refurbishment warranty usually lasts from several months to a year, depending on the workshop. Ask about it before commissioning the work and request that it be included on the invoice.
Service life is also affected by what is happening around the alternator: oil or coolant leaking onto the casing, a worn belt tensioner, or a weak battery that forces the alternator to operate continuously at full output. After refurbishment, it is worth addressing the underlying cause, otherwise the fault will return.
How can you check whether the alternator or the battery is at fault?
The simplest test is to measure the voltage across the battery terminals while the engine is running: the correct charging voltage is usually between 13.8 and 14.5 V. A lower reading means that the alternator is not charging, while a higher one means that the regulator is overcharging. With the engine switched off, a healthy, fully charged battery should read around 12.6 V.
If the symptoms are inconclusive, car computer diagnostics typically costs PLN 150 ‑ 185 and will reveal errors stored by the control unit. Garages usually charge PLN 75 ‑ 125 in labour to replace the battery, excluding the cost of the battery itself. Buying a new battery when the alternator is at fault will not help: the new one will also go flat.
Other signs that the alternator is at fault include the charging warning light coming on only at higher engine speeds or after the lights and blower are switched on, the belt squealing at start-up, and the smell of overheated insulation near the alternator. If you notice these symptoms, do not wait until the car breaks down on the road.
Alternator refurbishment in Warsaw, Poznań and other cities
We do not yet have local median alternator refurbishment prices for individual cities in our index because too few garages publish price lists. The general pattern seen for other car repairs is that hourly labour rates are higher in large cities such as Warsaw and Poznań than in smaller localities. It is therefore worth comparing two or three automotive electrical workshops, including those in a neighbouring town.
How can you avoid overpaying for alternator repairs?
- Ask for separate quotes for refurbishment and for removal and refitting. This will allow you to compare offers fairly.
- Ask which parts will be replaced. A reputable workshop will list the brushes, bearings, regulator and rectifier bridge on the invoice.
- Have the belt and tensioner checked at the same time. The labour cost will be lower because everything has already been dismantled.
- Do not buy the cheapest alternator from an unknown source. Refurbishment by a trusted workshop can be more reliable than a cheap replacement.
The cost of repairing a starter motor is calculated in a similar way, as explained in our article on starter motor refurbishment or replacement. Before a long journey, it is also worth reading our article on car servicing, while more repair prices can be found in the motoring category.

How much does a mechanic charge to replace an alternator?
Mechanik liczy wymianę alternatora według czasu pracy, zwykle od 1 do 3 roboczogodzin. Przy medianie stawki PLN 175 dwie godziny pracy kosztują około PLN 350, bez ceny samego alternatora.
Can you drive with a faulty alternator?
Should the belt be replaced when refurbishing an alternator?
Przy regeneracji alternatora warto sprawdzić pasek osprzętu i napinacz, bo i tak są zdejmowane. Wymiana paska klinowego kosztuje według cenników zwykle PLN 85 ‑ 300, a paska wielorowkowego w nowszych autach około PLN 400.
How much does battery replacement cost if the alternator is not at fault?
Sama robocizna przy wymianie akumulatora kosztuje zwykle PLN 75 ‑ 125, a akumulator kupuje się osobno. Dlatego przed naprawą warto zmierzyć napięcie ładowania i sprawdzić, która część zawiodła.
