Timing chain replacement most often costs PLN 1,550 (typically PLN 1,400 ‑ 2,250), while replacing a belt with a complete set of parts costs around PLN 1,900. However, chain replacement prices vary much more widely, from PLN 500 for simple engines to PLN 6,000 for V6 and V8 units and engines with the chain on the gearbox side.

How much does timing belt replacement cost, and how much of that is labour?

A mechanic has good access in a simple, transversely mounted inline engine, while a large diesel in a cramped engine bay requires the engine mount, accessories and covers to be removed.

According to the sources, the timing kit alone costs from several hundred PLN for popular cars to several thousand PLN for premium cars. Workshops usually quote a single price including parts, so our medians also include parts. How can you tell that the timing system is wearing out?

A timing belt rarely shows clear signs before snapping, which is why it is replaced according to mileage rather than sound. You should visit a mechanic immediately if you notice any of the following:

1. Squealing or humming from the front of the engine, usually caused by a worn pulley or tensioner.
2. Coolant leaking from beneath the timing cover, indicating a leaking water pump that could damage the belt.
3. Rattling after a cold start in engines with a chain, lasting several seconds.
4. The engine warning light and a camshaft correlation fault stored in the control unit.
5. Uneven running, loss of power or difficulty starting when the belt or chain has skipped a tooth.

How often should the timing system be replaced in 1.2 PureTech, 2.0 TDI and other engines?

The timing system replacement interval for a specific engine is set by the manufacturer and takes precedence over general ranges. This applies particularly to engines with their own particular history:

• 1.2 PureTech has a belt that runs in oil. The manufacturer has revised its recommendations several times, while mechanics have highlighted belt deterioration and blockage of the oil pump strainer. Ask an authorised service centre to check the current interval for your VIN.
• 2.0 TDI and 1.9 TDI have a conventional belt, but many mechanics recommend replacing it before the maximum mileage stated in the manual, together with the water pump.
• 1.5 TSI, 1.0 EcoBoost, 1.5 BlueHDi have their own, often long intervals or a belt that runs in oil. The manufacturer’s documentation is decisive here as well.

How long does timing system replacement take?

Timing belt replacement usually takes 3 to 6 hours of labour, so at many workshops the car can be dropped off in the morning and collected in the evening. Timing chain replacement takes longer, often one or two days, because more of the engine needs to be dismantled. The repair also takes longer if leaks from the shaft seals are discovered during the work. After replacement, the mechanic should manually rotate the crankshaft through two complete revolutions and check the timing marks before starting the engine. Ask whether they do this.

How can you avoid overpaying for timing system replacement?

• Ask for a quotation that names the kit manufacturer. Branded kits with a water pump cost more, but cheap pulleys can destroy a new belt.
• Replace the water pump together with the timing system if it is driven by the belt. Replacing it separately later means paying twice for the same labour.
• Ask for the old parts and an entry in the service book showing the mileage and date.
