Road or chassis dynamometer? Power test prices 2026

indekscen.pl editorial team · published 30 September 2026 · prices according to the 5 October 2026 index

A power test on a chassis dynamometer at a garage usually costs PLN 200, while price-list rates range from PLN 100 to PLN 300; testing a 4x4 vehicle costs more. A road dynamometer is a cheaper device that calculates power during a road run, but it is less accurate, so a chassis dynamometer is better for assessing chip tuning.

At a glance (as at 5 October 2026)

  • A single power test on a chassis dynamometer usually costs PLN 200, ranging from PLN 100 to PLN 300 according to price lists.
  • Testing the power of a 4x4 vehicle costs more than testing a two-wheel-drive vehicle, reaching up to PLN 300 in our sources.
  • Stage 1 chip tuning usually costs PLN 1,050 ‑ 1,800, and a dynamometer test is not usually included in this price.
  • Testing before and after chip tuning means two tests, so around PLN 400 at the median price.

A dynamometer is the simplest way to check whether an engine produces as much power as the manufacturer or tuner claims. However, adverts and forums mention two completely different devices: a chassis dynamometer at a garage and a road dynamometer that is connected to the car before it is driven. Below, we explain the difference, compare test prices from garage price lists and advise when testing is worthwhile.

How does a road dynamometer work?

A road dynamometer is a portable device that calculates engine power from the car’s acceleration during a road run, using data from sensors, GPS or the OBD diagnostic port, as well as the vehicle’s weight. It has no rollers or brake: the car accelerates along a straight section of road, while the software calculates power and torque.

The advantages of a road dynamometer are its price and the fact that it can be used anywhere. Its disadvantage is accuracy: the result depends on the car’s weight, the gradient of the road, wind, tyre pressure and air temperature. Two runs by the same car on different days can produce noticeably different figures. A road dynamometer is therefore suitable for before-and-after comparisons under the same conditions, but less suitable for reporting power to within a few horsepower.

Road or chassis dynamometer: what is the difference?

A chassis dynamometer measures power on rollers under controlled conditions, making it more accurate and repeatable, while a test at a garage usually costs PLN 200. A road dynamometer is cheaper and portable, but its result depends more heavily on external conditions.

Feature Chassis dynamometer Road dynamometer
How it measures the car remains on rollers, with load applied by a brake the car accelerates on the road
Cost of a test at a garage (median) PLN 200 usually included in a tuning package, with no separate median
Accuracy high, repeatable conditions lower, depends on the road, wind and weight
Where fixed test station at a garage any straight road or track
Best for assessing tuning, diagnosing power loss quick before-and-after comparison

We do not have the price of a road dynamometer test in the index as a separate service because garages usually use it while carrying out other work. If someone offers an ‘on-road’ test, ask what device they use and how they correct the result for the conditions.

Dynamometer: power test price at a garage

According to 5 price lists collected by indekscen.pl, a power test on a chassis dynamometer usually costs PLN 200. The lowest price in the sources is PLN 100 (when several cars are booked together), while the highest is PLN 300 for testing an all-wheel-drive vehicle. The full list of quotes from price lists is available on the dynamometer power measurement page.

What affects the price of a test:

  1. Drivetrain. A 4x4 dynamometer needs rollers for both axles, so testing a four-wheel-drive vehicle costs more than testing a two-wheel-drive vehicle.
  2. Number of cars. Garages offer discounts when several cars arrive together, for example at a car club meet.
  3. Scope of the service. A test run alone is different from a package that includes reading fault codes and printing graphs.
  4. Number of runs. A reliable result usually comes from several runs averaged within a single test; ask how many are included in the price.

4x4 and motorcycle dynamometers: are these separate services?

A 4x4 dynamometer is a chassis dynamometer with two sets of rollers, used to test all-wheel-drive vehicles; the test costs more than a standard one, reaching up to PLN 300 in our sources. Not every garage has one, so owners of 4x4 vehicles should ask about this before making an appointment. Testing a 4x4 vehicle on a single-axle dynamometer is either impossible or requires the drivetrain to be disconnected, which many vehicles do not allow.

A motorcycle dynamometer is a separate test station with one roller under the rear wheel. We do not yet have prices for motorcycle power testing and fuel-injection mapping in the index, so we do not provide them here.

When is a dynamometer test worthwhile?

A dynamometer test is particularly worthwhile for chip tuning: before the work, it shows the baseline performance, and afterwards, whether the promised power increase is genuine. Two tests, before and after, cost around PLN 400 at the median price. According to price lists, stage 1 chip tuning usually costs PLN 1,050 ‑ 1,800, and a dynamometer test is generally not included in this price. We discuss when tuning is worthwhile in the article is chip tuning worthwhile.

Other situations in which testing helps:

  • Suspected power loss. A result well below the factory figure may suggest a problem with the forced induction system, particulate filter or EGR valve.
  • Buying a used car after tuning. The test will show whether the power matches the seller’s claim.
  • Checking the car after a repair, for example after turbocharger reconditioning.

If the result is too low, the next step may be car computer diagnostics for around PLN 165. According to price lists, dPF cleaning costs around PLN 600, while eGR valve cleaning costs around PLN 550. We discuss DPF costs in the article DPF cleaning with installation.

How can you check a car’s power without a dynamometer?

A car’s power can be estimated without a dynamometer using a mobile app or OBD interface. These work like a basic road dynamometer, calculating power from acceleration and vehicle weight. The result is approximate and is only useful for before-and-after comparisons under the same conditions, on the same road and with the same vehicle weight.

A few rules if you take the measurements yourself:

  • measure on a flat, straight and empty section, in compliance with traffic regulations, preferably on a track or closed site,
  • enter the car’s actual weight, including the driver and fuel,
  • make several runs in both directions and average the result,
  • compare only measurements taken at similar temperatures and tyre pressures.

For settling matters with a tuner, making a warranty claim or selling the car, a printout from a chassis dynamometer, costing around PLN 200, is better.

What should you ask the garage before a test?

  • Can the dynamometer test 4x4 vehicles, and how much does the test cost in that case?
  • How many runs are included in the price, and will I receive printed power and torque graphs?
  • Is the result corrected to standard conditions (temperature and pressure)?
  • Is the car’s condition checked before the test, including the tyres, fluids and ECU fault codes?
