The DPF is a component that diesel drivers usually become familiar with when a dashboard warning light appears and power drops. The question then is: clean or replace it? The difference in cost is severalfold, while cleaning quotes vary by method and whether filter removal is included. We compare prices from garages and companies specialising in DPFs, and explain what to check before taking your car in.
How much does DPF cleaning with fitting cost?
DPF cleaning with removal and refitting usually costs from the median of PLN 600 up to PLN 1,800, depending on how difficult the filter is to remove in a particular model. According to 5 price lists and articles collected by indekscen.pl, half of all quotes fall within PLN 500 ‑ 750. This price includes assessing the level of blockage, cleaning and drying the filter.
Beware of offers advertising “DPF cleaning from PLN 300”: this is often the price without removal, or only for cleaning a filter that you bring in already removed. Ask whether removal, refitting and new seals are included. A full description and quotations from the sources are available at dPF cleaning.

DPF cleaning or replacement with a new filter?
DPF cleaning is almost always worthwhile because a new filter with fitting costs around PLN 3,000, while cleaning usually costs PLN 500 ‑ 750. Replacement only makes sense when the ceramic core is cracked or melted, or the filter is so badly blocked with oil ash that cleaning does not restore the flow.
| Option | Typical cost | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| DPF cleaning | PLN 500 ‑ 750 | filter blocked with soot or ash, core intact |
| DPF cleaning with removal | up to PLN 1,800 | difficult access, filter integrated with the catalytic converter |
| New DPF with fitting | around PLN 3,000 | core cracked, melted or already cleaned several times |
| EGR valve cleaning | PLN 525 ‑ 650 | often done with the DPF when the engine produces heavy smoke |
A good company measures the flow after cleaning and shows the before and after results. If the flow has not returned to normal, that is an argument for replacement, not another cleaning.
Why does a DPF become blocked?
A DPF becomes blocked because it traps soot from the diesel exhaust system, which must be regularly burned off at a high temperature. This burn-off process, known as regeneration, happens automatically during longer journeys at a steady speed. On short urban journeys, the engine does not have time to warm up and regeneration is interrupted, so soot accumulates faster than it is removed.
The other component is ash from engine oil. Ash does not burn at all and accumulates in the filter throughout its service life, so even a high-mileage car driven mainly on longer journeys eventually needs cleaning. This happens sooner in engines that consume oil.
DPF cleaning without removal: does it work?
DPF cleaning without removal involves injecting cleaning fluid through the pressure or temperature sensor opening, followed by forced regeneration using a diagnostic tester. It is the cheapest option, costing close to PLN 300, and helps when the filter is blocked mainly with soot. When there is a large amount of oil ash, which does not burn at any temperature, hydrodynamic or chemical cleaning after removing the filter is more effective.
DPF cleaning methods, from the cheapest:
- Forced regeneration using a diagnostic tester at a garage when the filter is only partially blocked.
- Cleaning with fluid without removal, followed by burn-off while driving or stationary.
- Hydrodynamic cleaning of the removed filter using pressurised water from both sides, followed by drying.
- Chemical cleaning and kiln burn-off, the most effective for ash and usually the most expensive.
How can you tell if a DPF is blocked?
A blocked DPF usually causes several symptoms at once: a filter or engine warning light on the dashboard, a noticeable loss of power and limp mode, the fan running more often after the engine is switched off, and increased fuel consumption. Some cars display a message advising the driver to take a longer journey. The cause can be confirmed with car computer diagnostics for around PLN 165 by measuring the pressure difference before and after the filter and checking the level of soot accumulation.
Diagnostics are important because a DPF often becomes blocked due to another fault: a leaking injector, the EGR valve, a temperature sensor or a turbocharger leaking oil. Cleaning alone, without fixing the cause, will only be effective for a few thousand kilometres.
What else should be checked when cleaning a DPF?
When cleaning a DPF, it is worth checking the components that most often cause the filter to become blocked again quickly. eGR valve cleaning usually costs PLN 525 ‑ 650, while the median price of fuel injector refurbishment is PLN 200 per injector. During the same visit, the mechanic can also replace the filters: the median price of replacement of car filters: fuel, air and cabin filters is PLN 85 per filter, while a diesel fuel filter costs around PLN 140.
| Service | Median | Typically | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| DPF cleaning | PLN 600 | PLN 500 ‑ 750 | 5 |
| EGR valve cleaning | PLN 550 | PLN 525 ‑ 650 | 3 |
| Fuel injector refurbishment | PLN 200 | PLN 150 ‑ 340 | 7 |
| Car computer diagnostics | PLN 165 | PLN 150 ‑ 185 | 6 |
| Oil change | PLN 100 | PLN 57.30 ‑ 160 | 61 |

Fuel can enter the oil after failed regeneration attempts, so oil change after DPF cleaning is good practice. Low-ash oil (ACEA C specifications) slows the accumulation of ash in the filter.
How long does DPF cleaning take?
DPF cleaning usually takes from a few hours to one working day. Cleaning without removal takes 2 to 3 hours, while cleaning that includes removing, washing and drying the filter is often completed the following day because the filter must dry thoroughly before refitting. Some companies offer a replacement filter from their stock while yours is being cleaned, reducing the downtime to a few hours.
How long do you need to drive to regenerate a DPF?
DPF regeneration while driving usually takes 10 to 20 minutes at a steady speed, preferably on a dual carriageway or motorway and at more than 2000 rpm. If you interrupt regeneration by switching off the engine, the car will try again on the next journey, but a series of interrupted regenerations is a straightforward route to a blocked filter.
How to drive a diesel without blocking the DPF:
- Take a longer drive once every few hundred kilometres for at least 15 minutes.
- Do not switch off the engine if the fan is running after driving or the car’s idle speed is elevated: regeneration may be in progress.
- Use oil that meets the manufacturer’s specification for cars with a DPF.
- Do not ignore the warning light. Acting quickly means regeneration at a garage rather than replacing the filter.
If the car is used mainly for short urban journeys, a diesel with a DPF will need cleaning more often. We cover other major repair costs in our articles on clutch and dual-mass flywheel replacement and how often to replace a timing belt.
How can you avoid overpaying for DPF cleaning?
- Ask for the price including removal and refitting, not just cleaning.
- Request before and after flow measurements for the cleaning.
- Have the cause diagnosed before paying for cleaning.
- Check the warranty on the cleaning outcome.
- Do not agree to have the filter removed. It is illegal and makes the vehicle inspection and sale of the car more difficult. We cover vehicle inspections in our article on how much a vehicle inspection costs.

Frequently asked questions
How much does DPF cleaning cost for a 2.0 TDI diesel?
How much does DPF cleaning cost for a van?
Should the oil be changed after DPF cleaning?
Robocizna wymiany oleju to zwykle PLN 57.30 ‑ 160, plus olej i filtr.
Is removing a DPF legal?
How often should a DPF be cleaned?
