A salon appointment for hair colour can cost as much as a haircut, but it can also cost several times more. It depends on whether you are colouring just the roots or the full length, whether the old colour first needs to be removed and whether the colouring appointment also includes a cut and blow-dry. We have collected prices from public salon price lists and articles. How much does hair colouring cost at a salon?

Single-colour colouring for medium-length hair most often costs PLN 315 at a salon, according to 4 sources collected by indekscen.pl. Half of the prices fall within the PLN 290 ‑ 335 range. The cheapest salons, usually for shorter hair, start at PLN 150, while salons in large cities charge up to PLN 450.

The price shown in a price list is often a starting price. The hairdresser determines the final bill after examining your hair, as long, thick hair requires more dye and takes longer to work on.

Colouring, keratin treatment or a perm: how much do salon treatments cost?

Of the three treatments, keratin straightening is the most expensive, with a median price of PLN 490, followed by colouring at PLN 315, while a perm is the cheapest at PLN 290. All prices are for medium-length hair.

Keratin treatment is expensive because it takes several hours and the products are costly. A perm requires less product, but also takes several hours. Hair colouring needs to be repeated most frequently, so over a year it is usually the biggest expense of the three.

How much does single-colour hair colouring cost, and how much does colour removal cost?

Single-colour hair colouring usually costs PLN 290 ‑ 335, while removing colour from all the hair costs around PLN 530. Colour removal means stripping out the old, usually dark colour before applying a new one. It may be necessary when you want to go from a dark to a light shade and often requires more than one appointment.

Colouring just the roots is cheaper than colouring the full length. We do not have a separate median for root colouring, but salons charge less for it than for single-colour full-length colouring because the dye is applied only to a few centimetres near the scalp. Multi-tonal techniques, such as highlights or balayage, cost more than a single colour.

How long does hair colouring take at a salon?

Single-colour hair colouring usually takes between one and a half and two and a half hours at a salon, including applying the dye, processing time, washing and drying. Roots alone take less time, around one to one and a half hours. Colour removal and changing from dark to light hair can take four hours or longer, which is why salons charge more for them, around PLN 530.

Colouring and a haircut: how much does the whole appointment cost?

A complete appointment with colouring and a haircut costs the price of colouring, usually PLN 290 ‑ 335, plus the haircut, which has a median price of PLN 96. Some salons offer ready-made ‘colouring, haircut and styling’ packages that cost less than booking the services separately.

Haircut prices vary considerably between cities, as shown in the table below. Similar differences can be expected for colouring, although we do not yet have hair colouring prices for individual cities.

The median price of a women’s haircut is PLN 50 in Katowice, PLN 115 in Warsaw and PLN 165 in Wrocław. A creative haircut with styling costs around PLN 235.

Is it worth having your hair coloured at a salon?

Salon colouring is worthwhile for major colour changes, lightening, colour removal and multi-tonal techniques, because correcting a mistake made at home can cost more than the salon appointment itself. Fixing an unsuccessful colour treatment often involves colour removal costing around PLN 530. Colouring your hair at home can make sense when refreshing your own natural shade or going one or two shades darker. We do not collect prices for hair dyes sold in chemists, so we do not compare them with salon prices here.

How long does salon hair colour last?

Hair colour applied at a salon usually lasts 4 to 8 weeks before the roots become clearly visible. Colour along the lengths fades more slowly if you wash your hair with shampoo for colour-treated hair and protect it from the sun. Grey hair requires more frequent colouring because the regrowth is more noticeable.

Colouring grey hair: does it cost more?

Colouring grey hair at a salon usually costs the same as other single-colour treatments, namely PLN 290 ‑ 335, but it costs more over a year because appointments are more frequent. Grey hair is thicker and absorbs dye less readily, so the hairdresser chooses a dye with stronger coverage and may leave it on the hair for longer. People with a lot of grey hair often switch to colouring only the roots every few weeks and have a full colour treatment less often. Toning can also be a cheaper alternative. It does not cover grey hair completely, but softens its appearance and washes out more quickly.

Colouring men’s hair, for example darkening grey hair at the temples, is usually cheaper than colouring women’s hair because it is shorter. We do not have a separate median for this service, but short hair brings the price closer to the lower end of the range, PLN 150.

What affects the price of hair colouring?

The price of hair colouring depends on several factors:

1. Extent of colouring. Colouring just the roots is cheaper than colouring the full length, while colour removal is the most expensive.
2. Hair length and thickness. Short hair brings the price closer to PLN 150, while long hair brings it closer to PLN 450.
3. City and salon. In large cities, single-colour treatments often start at higher prices.
4. Package. Adding a haircut and styling increases the bill, but a package can cost less than booking each service separately.
5. Dye brand and conditioning treatments. Protective treatments during colouring usually cost extra.

How can you avoid overpaying for hair colouring?

• Ask for the final price before the treatment, not just the starting price.
• Check whether washing, styling and conditioning are included in the price.
• Book a consultation before making a major colour change. The hairdresser will assess whether colour removal is necessary.
• Colour your roots regularly, instead of colouring the full length every time.
