A vehicle recovery bill usually consists of three parts: a loading fee, a per-kilometre rate and surcharges for night-time service, weekends or difficult access to the car. The per-kilometre rate itself is fairly predictable, as roadside assistance companies have similar price lists. Below, we calculate how much vehicle recovery costs over specific distances, when you pay for travel in both directions and how to avoid overpaying if your car breaks down on the road. The figures are medians from public price lists of vehicle recovery companies collected in the price index.

How much does transporting a car by recovery vehicle cost per 1 km?

Transporting a passenger car by recovery vehicle usually costs 2.50 ‑ 4 PLN/km, while the median from 13 price lists collected by indekscen.pl is 3 PLN/km. The lowest rate we found is 1.50 PLN/km, and the highest is 7.50 PLN/km. This price includes loading and unloading a car with a working chassis and wheels. Quotes from the price lists are available on the towing (recovery vehicle) page.

The per-kilometre rate mainly depends on the length of the journey: companies charge more per kilometre or apply a flat rate for short distances, and less for long ones. Higher rates also apply to vans and heavier vehicles.

How much does vehicle recovery over 50, 100 and 500 km cost?

At the median rate, recovering a passenger car over 100 km costs around PLN 300, typically PLN 250 ‑ 400. The table below applies the same rate to common journey lengths:

Journey Cost at the median rate Typical range
Short journey within a city (flat rate) PLN 200 depends on the company
50 km PLN 150 PLN 130 ‑ 200
100 km PLN 300 PLN 250 ‑ 400
250 km PLN 750 PLN 630 ‑ 1,000
500 km PLN 1,500 PLN 1,300 ‑ 2,000

The table shows the cost of the journey carrying the car. For short distances, the actual bill is usually higher than the rate multiplied by the number of kilometres because a loading fee or minimum call-out charge is added. For journeys of several hundred kilometres or more, the opposite may apply: some companies charge a lower rate, which falls to around 2 PLN/km when transporting cars from abroad.

If you are importing a car from abroad, compare the recovery quote with the transporting a car from abroad service: the median for the entire journey from Western Europe is PLN 2,750, typically PLN 2,350 ‑ 3,100. Carriers often combine several cars on one transporter, making them cheaper than recovering a single vehicle.

How much does recovering a car over 500 km cost?

At the median rate, recovering a passenger car over 500 km costs around PLN 1,500, or PLN 1,300 ‑ 2,000 within the typical range of rates. This is roughly what you would pay, for example, to transport a car home to southern Poland after it breaks down during a holiday trip to the coast.

For such a long journey, it is worth calling two or three companies and asking for a flat rate for the entire service. A carrier already returning in your direction or able to take another car will often offer a price closer to the lower end of the range. Also ask whether you can travel in the recovery vehicle’s cab: not every company permits this, and otherwise you will also need to pay for your train journey home.

For an international journey, the rate is not the only consideration. You should also check whether the company is authorised to transport vehicles abroad and has cargo insurance. Ask about both before providing the collection address.

Do you pay for the recovery vehicle in both directions?

You usually pay for the recovery vehicle to reach the car and transport it to the destination, rather than for the full return journey. However, some companies calculate mileage from their base and back, especially when the car needs to be collected far from their premises. This can almost double the price of a 100 km journey, so ask the following questions directly before placing the order:

  1. Where does the mileage calculation begin: at the company’s base, at the breakdown location or at the city boundary?
  2. Is the empty return journey included in the price, or is it charged separately?
  3. What is the initial call-out fee for loading, and does it include the first few kilometres?
  4. Are motorway tolls and other road charges included or added to the final bill?
  5. Is there a surcharge for night-time service, weekends, public holidays, or a car in a ditch or underground car park?

The safest option is to request the total door-to-door price by text message or message. A company that only states its per-kilometre rate and refuses to calculate the total will often add charges that were not mentioned later.

In large cities, the per-kilometre rate may be similar to the national rate, but companies are more likely to charge a flat rate for journeys within the city. When traffic is heavy or access is difficult, the rate reflects the time involved rather than the distance.

What increases the cost of vehicle recovery?

  • Vehicle type. A van, campervan or heavy SUV requires a larger recovery vehicle and attracts a higher rate.
  • Time. Night-time, weekend and public holiday call-outs can be considerably more expensive than those during working hours.
  • Difficult loading. A car in a ditch or underground car park, without wheels or with locked brakes, requires a winch and more time.
  • Short distance. A minimum call-out charge means that a few kilometres may cost almost as much as several dozen.
  • Road charges. On longer journeys, some companies charge motorway tolls separately.

When is a recovery vehicle unnecessary?

A recovery vehicle is not always the cheapest solution, as some faults can be repaired on the spot. If the keys have been left inside a locked car, emergency car opening usually costs PLN 125 ‑ 255. A flat battery or puncture can often be dealt with by a mobile mechanic, who charges for travel and working time. The median hourly labour rate at an independent garage is PLN 175.

Before calling a recovery vehicle, check your insurance policy as well. Breakdown cover purchased with third-party liability or comprehensive insurance often includes recovery for a specified number of kilometres without an additional charge. It is worth checking this limit when choosing insurance, as breakdown cover options vary considerably.

If you transport the car yourself, hiring a self-drive recovery vehicle costs around 200 PLN/day according to price lists. This is a good option for planned transport, such as collecting a car bought far from home, but not for an unexpected breakdown.

How can you avoid overpaying for vehicle recovery?

People overpay most often when they are stressed and stranded on the roadside, and the first company found online only quotes a price after loading the car. Save the numbers of one or two local companies and your insurer’s breakdown assistance number in advance. During every call, ask for the total price, and after the service request a receipt or invoice itemising the mileage and surcharges. It is also worth keeping your car in good condition: roadworthy tyres and a valid inspection reduce the risk of a breakdown during a journey, as explained in our articles on how much a vehicle inspection costs and how much tyre replacement costs.
