Arranging a funeral usually comes suddenly, at a difficult time, and decisions have to be made within a few days. That is why we have brought together the costs of each part of the farewell, based on price lists from funeral homes, crematoria, stonemasons and florists. The final bill consists of several separate items: funeral home services, a cemetery plot, an optional funeral reception and, a few months later, a headstone.

How much does a traditional funeral cost?

The median price of a complete traditional funeral arranged by a funeral home is PLN 6,550. Half of the sources fall within PLN 3,400 ‑ 7,900, while the highest amount we found is PLN 20,000. The typical price includes preparation of the body, a coffin, transport of the deceased, organisation of the ceremony and handling the paperwork.

The choice of coffin, from a simple pine one to an oak one, the type of ceremony, religious, secular or without a ceremony, and extras such as flowers or music have the greatest effect on the price. A cemetery plot and an optional funeral reception are charged separately from the funeral home’s price. There is no standard price list for a donation to the parish for a Catholic funeral. It is best to ask the parish office directly about the amount.

Is a secular funeral cheaper?

A secular funeral differs mainly in the form of the ceremony: instead of a Mass, the farewell is led by a celebrant, often at a funeral home or municipal cemetery. The other elements, including the coffin or urn, transport, preparation of the body and cemetery plot, cost the same. We do not have a separate price for a secular ceremony in the index, so we do not compare amounts here. The difference in the final bill mainly depends on whether the funeral home includes a celebrant in its package or charges for one as an extra.

How much does a funeral with cremation cost?

The cremation itself usually costs PLN 900, typically PLN 765 ‑ 1,100. This is not much compared with the cost of a complete funeral, but it is important to remember what is not included: a cremation coffin, without varnish or metal fittings, an urn, transport of the deceased, the ceremony and paperwork. We do not have separate prices for these items in the index, so we do not provide a total cost for a funeral with cremation. Funeral homes usually offer cremation packages. Ask for an itemised quote.

Cremation also offers more options when choosing a burial place. The urn can be placed in an earth grave, an existing family grave or a columbarium niche, which affects subsequent costs.

How much does a cemetery plot cost?

The fee for a single earth grave, usually covering 20 years, has a median of PLN 700 (typically PLN 615 ‑ 1,050). In large cities such as Warsaw, Kraków and Wrocław, it is closer to PLN 3,750. A masonry grave costs around PLN 2,400, while a columbarium niche for an urn costs around PLN 4,950.

There is also usually a separate burial fee charged by the cemetery authority. If the family already has a grave in which another person can be buried, this part of the cost is usually much lower. It is worth asking the cemetery authority when the existing fee expires.

How much does a headstone cost?

A headstone is usually installed a few months after the funeral, once the ground has settled, so this expense can be planned without rushing. A single headstone with installation most commonly costs PLN 5,400, typically PLN 5,150 ‑ 5,900. A double headstone costs around PLN 13,600.

The greatest differences result from the material. Terrazzo and conglomerate are the cheapest, granite is the standard choice, while marble is the most expensive and less resistant to frost.

The thickness and size of the slab, as well as the lettering, also increase the price: sandblasted letters are cheaper than hand-carved ones. When requesting a quote, ask whether installation and removal of the temporary plaque are included and where the granite comes from.

How much do flowers and a funeral reception cost?

A medium-sized funeral wreath usually costs PLN 485. Small wreaths and bouquets are cheaper, while large arrangements made with expensive flowers cost up to PLN 1,200. A personalised ribbon and delivery to the cemetery may cost extra. The family often orders one wreath, while other relatives and friends bring their own bouquets.

A funeral reception, meaning a meal after the funeral, is priced per person: the median is 95 PLN/person, typically 83 ‑ 125 PLN/person. The standard menu usually includes soup, a main course, coffee, tea and cake. For 30 people, this comes to around PLN 2,900. A funeral reception is not compulsory. More and more families choose modest refreshments at home or a gathering with only their closest relatives and friends.

How much do exhumation and grave care cost?

Exhumation may be necessary when moving remains to a family grave or another cemetery. The service itself, meaning the recovery and reburial of the remains, usually costs PLN 1,400, typically PLN 1,250 ‑ 1,550. Transport to another cemetery and a new exhumation coffin are charged separately, and approval from the sanitary authority is required for an exhumation.

If the family lives far away, a company can be hired to clean the grave. A one-off grave cleaning service for a single grave usually costs around PLN 120 and includes removing leaves, weeds and old grave candles, often with photographic documentation.

Who pays for the funeral and how can costs be reduced?

The person arranging the funeral bears the costs. They can apply to ZUS or KRUS for a funeral allowance, a fixed amount that usually covers some of the expenses. Funeral homes often settle the allowance directly, in which case the family only pays the difference. Check the current allowance amount and eligibility requirements on the ZUS website.

Several steps can help avoid unnecessary expenses:

  • Ask for an itemised quote. The coffin, transport, preparation of the body and ceremonial arrangements are separate elements, and a package is not always cheaper.
  • Compare two funeral homes if time allows. Prices can vary considerably between providers in the same city.
  • Do not decide on a headstone immediately. A temporary plaque is sufficient for a few months, and taking the time to compare quotes from stonemasons usually reduces the price.

The prices in this article come from public price lists published by funeral homes, crematoria and stonemasons, as well as from guides. Each price has a source, date and verbatim quotation on the relevant service page, for example how much a funeral costs.
