A periodic technical inspection of a passenger car costs PLN 149 at every vehicle inspection station, while the inspection of a car with an LPG or CNG system costs PLN 245. These are statutory fees, the same throughout Poland.

In practice, a ‘vehicle inspection’ can mean two different things. The first is the mandatory technical inspection at a vehicle inspection station, commonly known as the registration inspection: its price is set by law and is the same in Gdańsk as in Rzeszów. The second is a service inspection at a garage (LPG system, air conditioning or a periodic service according to the service book), for which each garage has its own price list. Below, we compare both groups using price lists and official sources from our index.

How much does a passenger car technical inspection cost?

A technical inspection of a passenger car without an LPG system costs PLN 149. This rate has applied since 19 September 2025, when the ministry increased technical inspection fees after many years without changes. The amount is the same for petrol and diesel cars, new and twenty-year-old vehicles, and regional and basic inspection stations.

The price covers the inspection itself: checks of the brakes, lights, suspension, steering, exhaust emissions and bodywork condition. It does not include repairs. If the vehicle fails, you return after the repair to have only the system that failed inspected again; this carries a separate, lower fee.

How much does an inspection of a car with an LPG system cost?

A car with an LPG or CNG system undergoes additional checks of the tank, pipes and system tightness, so the inspection costs PLN 245, considerably more than for a car without an LPG system.

That is not all. An LPG system also requires an annual service at a garage: checking for leaks, testing the valves and filters, and running a computer diagnostic check of the controller. This service most often costs PLN 155, with a typical range of PLN 145 ‑ 170. Garages usually charge separately for liquid-phase and vapour-phase filters. The LPG tank must also be replaced roughly every ten years, which costs about PLN 700 including installation.

Practical advice: book the LPG service a few days before the technical inspection. The inspector will check the system for leaks anyway, and any leak found means a failed inspection and a second visit.

How much does an inspection of a motorcycle, trailer or other vehicle cost?

All technical inspection rates are set by the same regulation, so they vary only by vehicle type, not by inspection station or city.

A few conclusions from the table:

• A motorcycle is the cheapest. The inspection costs PLN 94, both for a 125 cm³ scooter and a large touring motorcycle.
• A trailer for a passenger car (up to 3.5 t maximum authorised mass) costs PLN 119, less than the inspection of the car itself.
• Heavier trailers and semi-trailers from 3.5 to 16 t cost PLN 249, while an agricultural trailer up to 1.5 t costs just PLN 61.

Does an inspection cost more for a diesel, a car with a towbar or an electric car?

The rate depends on the type of vehicle, not its powertrain. A diesel passenger car costs the same to inspect as a petrol car: PLN 149. The surcharge applies only to an LPG or CNG system because the inspector must examine an additional system. The towbar is checked as part of the standard inspection, while the trailer is inspected separately at the rate shown in the table above. If you have an unusual vehicle (an imported or modified car, or one with a special-purpose body), ask the station in advance whether an additional inspection will be required.

How much does an overdue vehicle inspection cost?

The same as an inspection completed on time. A vehicle inspection station does not charge any surcharge for lateness. The problem lies elsewhere: driving without a valid technical inspection may result in a fine many times higher than the inspection price itself, and the police may retain the vehicle registration certificate during a roadside check. It is therefore best not to delay and to visit an inspection station as soon as you notice that the deadline has passed. If you are unsure about the consequences in your situation, for example following a third-party liability insurance claim, ask your insurer.

A new passenger car undergoes its first inspection three years after registration, the second after another two years and then every year. Cars with LPG or CNG systems must be inspected annually from the outset.

How much does a car air conditioning service cost?

This is not part of the technical inspection, but it is worth remembering before summer. A basic air conditioning service, meaning a leak check and refrigerant top-up, most often costs PLN 220. Half of the price lists fall within the range of PLN 150 ‑ 225, with the cheapest offers starting at PLN 99. In smaller localities, the service costs about PLN 120.

What other costs come with owning and inspecting a car?

The technical inspection is the cheapest mandatory expense. If you buy a used car, you also need to register it: administrative fees most often amount to PLN 160, or about PLN 1,080 with personalised number plates. Details are available at vehicle registration.

A periodic service by a mechanic in accordance with the service book (oil, filters and fluids) is a completely different service, with a price that depends on the make and model. We do not yet have a reliable median for it, so we do not provide an estimate. If your car is under warranty, check the service book to see which services are required to maintain it.

How should you prepare your car to avoid paying twice?

• Check all the lights, including the number plate light and reversing light. A blown bulb is a common reason for failing the inspection.
• Check whether the engine or airbag warning light is on.
• Top up the windscreen washer fluid and check the wipers.
• If the car has LPG, have the system serviced beforehand and bring the tank documents with you.
• Bring the vehicle registration certificate. The station cannot charge more than the statutory rate, so there is no point looking for a ‘cheaper’ station; it is better to choose the nearest one.
