An LPG system is one of the few ways to significantly reduce the running costs of a petrol car. However, the installation price is only the first expense: there is an annual system service and a more expensive roadworthiness test, as well as tank recertification or replacement every ten years. We have collected garage price lists and calculated the full cost of owning an LPG system.

How much does LPG system installation cost in 2026?

Installing a 4th-generation LPG system most often costs PLN 3,400, according to 3 price lists and articles collected by indekscen.pl. Half of all quotes fall within PLN 3,300 ‑ 3,700, the cheapest start at PLN 2,500, while more expensive systems for more powerful engines cost up to PLN 5,000.

The price includes the complete system and labour: the LPG tank, reducer, control unit, gas injectors and rail, hoses, liquid-phase filter, test drive and final calibration. Details and sources are available on the lPG system installation page.

LPG installation price list: 4th or 6th generation?

A 4th-generation LPG system (sequential, for indirect-injection engines) usually costs PLN 3,300 ‑ 3,700, while a 6th-generation system for direct-injection engines costs around PLN 8,250. The engine, rather than the driver’s preference, determines which system can be installed.

System type Installation price Suitable engines
4th generation (sequential) PLN 3,300 ‑ 3,700 indirect injection, most older petrol cars
4th generation, 6- and 8-cylinder engines closer to PLN 5,000 more injectors and a larger reducer
6th generation (direct injection) around PLN 8,250 newer engines with direct petrol injection

Direct-injection engines, designated for example as TSI, TFSI or GDI, are more expensive to convert because they require either a 6th-generation system or a solution in which the engine continuously uses some petrol as well. Before requesting a quote, check your registration certificate and vehicle documentation to identify your engine.

What affects the price of an LPG system?

The price of an LPG system depends mainly on its generation and the engine’s injection type, followed by the tank and the garage. The main factors are:

  1. Engine injection type: indirect injection is cheaper, while direct injection costs several times more.
  2. Number of cylinders: each cylinder requires a separate gas injector.
  3. Tank: a toroidal tank fitted in place of the spare wheel is more expensive than a cylindrical tank in the boot, but does not take up boot space.
  4. Component brand: a reducer and control unit from a reputable manufacturer cost more, but are easier to service later.
  5. Region and garage: rates can be higher in large cities.

Does an LPG system need servicing after installation?

Yes, after installing an LPG system, it must be serviced at a garage every year and undergo an annual roadworthiness test at a vehicle testing station. Servicing the LPG system at a garage usually costs PLN 145 ‑ 170, excluding new filters. A roadworthiness test for a car with LPG costs PLN 245, compared with PLN 149 for a car without LPG, and a car with an LPG system must be tested annually, regardless of its age.

The fixed costs of an LPG system over a year and a decade are:

Is installing LPG cost-effective?

Installing LPG is usually cost-effective when the car covers more than around 12 000 km a year and the garage provides proper calibration and approved components. At filling stations, a litre of autogas costs roughly half as much as a litre of petrol, while a car uses around one-sixth to one-fifth more LPG than petrol. This produces a clear saving on every kilometre driven.

To calculate the payback period for your car:

  1. Calculate the petrol cost per 100 km: multiply average fuel consumption by the current price of a litre of petrol.
  2. Calculate the LPG cost per 100 km: increase petrol consumption by around one-fifth, then multiply it by the price of a litre of LPG.
  3. The difference is the saving per 100 km. Multiply it by the annual mileage divided by 100.
  4. Subtract the annual costs: the system service (PLN 155) and the additional roadworthiness test fee.
  5. Divide the installation price (PLN 3,400) by the annual saving. The result is the number of years needed to recoup the cost.

With high annual mileage, a 4th-generation system usually pays for itself within one to two years. A 6th-generation system costing around PLN 8,250 takes several times longer to pay for itself, so it mainly makes sense for very high mileages, for example in a taxi or company car.

How much does it cost to convert an older car to LPG?

Converting an older car to LPG costs the same as converting a newer one, usually PLN 3,300 ‑ 3,700, because the price is determined by the system, not the value of the car. With a cheap, older car, it is therefore worth assessing the engine’s condition first: a worn engine with high oil consumption or leaking valves will not run well on LPG.

Before installation, ask for the spark plugs, coils, ignition leads and valve clearances to be checked. LPG has a higher combustion temperature and exposes weaknesses in the ignition system more quickly. Buying a cheap second-hand car with an LPG system is also an option: in that case, check the tank certification date and the system’s service history.

How should you maintain an LPG system to avoid repair costs?

An LPG system requires little maintenance, but it must be done regularly: replacing the liquid- and vapour-phase filters during the annual service, checking for leaks and checking the control unit settings. A garage service usually costs PLN 145 ‑ 170, and it is worth using the same LPG installer, who knows the system’s history.

A few rules that extend the life of the system and engine:

  • Start the engine on petrol and let the system switch to LPG after the reducer has warmed up.
  • Do not let the petrol tank run empty, because the fuel pump is cooled by petrol and the car starts on it anyway.
  • Respond to juddering and the engine warning light. A poorly adjusted system increases fuel consumption and puts strain on the engine.
  • Replace the spark plugs more often than in a car running solely on petrol.

How do you choose a garage for LPG installation?

  • Ask about specific components: the make of the reducer, control unit and injectors, not just the price of the complete system.
  • Check the warranty for the system and labour, as well as the terms of the first service after installation.
  • Ask about experience with your engine. A good garage will tell you directly if the model is unsuitable for LPG.
  • Make sure you will receive the documents needed to add the system to the vehicle registration certificate.
  • Compare quotes with the same scope: toroidal or cylindrical tank, filters and the first adjustment.
