A cracked screen is one of the most common device faults, and the first question is always the same: repair it or buy a new one? The answer depends on the device. A laptop screen is relatively inexpensive, while a TV panel often costs a substantial proportion of the price of a new TV. We compare prices from public repair shop price lists for laptops, TVs and tablets and explain when a repair makes sense.

These prices apply to standard screens in popular laptops. The price rises for touchscreens, high-resolution screens (2K, 4K), OLED screens, refresh rates of 144 Hz or more, and laptops where the screen is bonded to the glass and lid as a single module, as in MacBooks. In such cases, the part may cost several times more than the standard replacement price, and we do not yet have precise median prices for these models.

How much does TV screen replacement cost?

TV screen replacement for a popular size, including the part, most often costs PLN 1,250, typically PLN 1,050 ‑ 1,350, with listed prices ranging from PLN 500 to PLN 2,000. The price rises sharply with screen size and technology. Screens measuring 55, 65 and 75 inches and OLED panels cost several times more than popular 32 to 43-inch models. Independent repair shops can be considerably cheaper than authorised ones, but they do not always have access to original parts. Remember to add the cost of transporting the TV to the repair shop if this is not included in the price.

A tablet screen costs more than a laptop screen because, in most tablets, the touchscreen glass is bonded to the display and the entire module must be replaced. Is laptop screen replacement worthwhile?

Laptop screen replacement is almost always worthwhile if the rest of the device works, as the service usually costs PLN 170 ‑ 215, only a small fraction of the price of a new laptop. The exceptions are very old, low-performance laptops and models with expensive integrated display modules.

When is a laptop not worth repairing? A practical rule:

1. Compare the quote with the value of the device. If the repair costs more than half the price of a similar used laptop, consider buying another one instead.
2. Check whether the screen is definitely the problem. A black screen may indicate a damaged display cable, backlight or graphics card. Connect the laptop to an external monitor: if it displays an image, the screen or display cable is at fault.
3. Account for other faults. A laptop with a screen cracked in a fall may also have damaged hinges and casing. Ask for a full diagnosis, costing around PLN 80.
4. Consider its age. A seven-year-old laptop that still works well for office tasks may remain worth repairing. It is less worthwhile if it already fails to meet your needs.

Is TV screen replacement worthwhile?

TV screen replacement is mainly worthwhile for large and expensive models, such as OLED or high-end TVs, where PLN 1,250 or more for a panel is still considerably less than the price of a new TV. For inexpensive 32 to 43-inch TVs, the repair cost is often close to the price of a new device.

Before arranging a screen replacement, check whether the TV is still under warranty or whether the damage is covered by device insurance or home insurance. Warranties usually exclude cracks caused by physical damage, but not manufacturing defects in the panel.

What are the symptoms of a faulty TV screen?

The most common symptoms of a damaged TV screen include vertical or horizontal lines, patches and discolouration, a crack with distorted colours around the point of impact, and an image visible on only part of the screen. Not every one of these symptoms means that the screen needs replacing.

• Dark picture, but the sound works: this is often caused by faulty LED backlighting, which is usually cheaper to repair than replacing the screen.
• Lines that disappear when the frame is touched: the display cable or connector may be at fault, rather than the panel itself.
• A crack and black patches: this means the screen is damaged and must be replaced.

A good repair shop will first diagnose the cause and quote separate prices for the part and labour.

How long does laptop screen replacement take?

Replacing a laptop screen itself usually takes between 30 minutes and 2 hours, but the overall repair takes longer because the repair shop must order a screen compatible with the model. For popular laptops, the part arrives within 1 to 3 working days, while unusual models and touchscreens may take a week or more. It is worth arranging removing dust from a laptop at the same time, as the laptop has already been taken apart.

How can you avoid overpaying for screen replacement?

• Give the exact laptop model and screen part number (shown on a label on the back of the panel). A rough estimate may be too high.
• Ask for the price both with and without the part. The difference between the median of PLN 200 and the labour-only price of PLN 50 shows how much the repair shop charges for the screen.
• Ask about the warranty for both the part and the service, and whether the screen is new or refurbished.
• Beware of lower-quality replacement parts. A cheaper screen may have poorer viewing angles or a different resolution from the original.
