‘How much does a guide earn?’ is a question asked both by people considering this career and by tour organisers who want to know whether a quote is fair. We do not collect guide salary data because most guides are self-employed and charge per booking. We do, however, have rates from guides’ public price lists, which can be used to calculate the revenue from a single tour and from an entire month during the season.

How much does a tour guide earn for one tour?

A tour guide most often earns PLN 440 for one group tour lasting up to three hours, according to 5 price lists and articles collected by indekscen.pl. Half of the rates fall within the PLN 350 ‑ 600 range. The cheapest offers start at PLN 150, while the most expensive reach PLN 1,000.

This is the rate for the entire group, not per person. Some guides quote net prices, so VAT is added when an invoice is issued to a company. Details and quotations from price lists are available at tour guide.

How much does a guide cost per hour?

A guide’s time usually does not have a separate hourly price because guides charge a flat rate for tours lasting up to two or three hours, typically PLN 350 ‑ 600. An hourly rate only applies to each additional hour, at around 98 PLN/h. A short tour, for example one hour, therefore usually costs as much as the full flat rate.

Rates by service type are as follows:

Guide service Typical rate Charged for
City tour (up to 3 hours) PLN 350 ‑ 600 entire group
Each additional hour around 98 PLN/h entire group
Mountain excursion with a Tatra Mountains guide around PLN 975 entire group
Tour for a group of 10 around PLN 40 per person
Tour for a group of 20 around PLN 20 per person

How much does a tour guide earn per month on average?

A guide’s monthly earnings depend on the number of bookings. At the median rate of PLN 440 per tour, 10 group tours per month generate around PLN 4,400 in revenue, while 20 generate around PLN 8,800. These are gross amounts: a self-employed guide pays tax and social security contributions from them and also covers travel, phone and route preparation costs.

Example revenue for different numbers of bookings:

Number of tours per month Revenue at the median rate Typical range
5 around PLN 2,200 PLN 1,800 ‑ 3,000
10 around PLN 4,400 PLN 3,500 ‑ 6,000
20 around PLN 8,800 PLN 7,000 ‑ 12,000

The most important variable is the season. There are many bookings in spring and summer, when school trips and foreign tourists arrive, but few during winter in many cities. This is why many guides combine this work with another job, such as tour leading, teaching or translation. We do not give an average guide salary because we have no data on the number of bookings per year, and without it any ‘average’ would be a guess.

What determines a guide’s rate?

A guide’s rate depends primarily on the tour duration, city and type of route. The main factors are:

  1. Tour duration. The flat rate covers two or three hours, after which each additional hour is charged separately.
  2. City. Warsaw has the widest full range of prices, while the collected price lists include offers from Gdańsk starting at PLN 150.
  3. Group size. Large groups can cost more because they require a PA system or headsets.
  4. Tour language. A tour in a foreign language may cost more than one in Polish.
  5. Type of route. In the mountains, the price covers the entire excursion, so it is considerably higher, at around PLN 975.

The price does not include admission tickets to museums and attractions or headset hire for the group.

How much does a guide cost in the mountains and in the Bieszczady Mountains?

A Tatra Mountains guide charges around PLN 975 for a mountain excursion with a group, considerably more than a city guide charges for three hours. The excursion usually lasts all day, and the guide is responsible for the group’s safety on the trail. We do not yet have a separate median for the Bieszczady Mountains, but the same principle applies: the price is for the group and the entire day, and depends on the route and its difficulty.

What qualifications does a tour guide need?

City and regional guides no longer need a state licence because the profession has been partially deregulated. Qualifications are still required for mountain guides, while some attractions, such as large museums and national parks, only allow guides who have completed their own training or hold their own licence to conduct tours. In practice, clients choose trained and experienced guides and pay more for foreign-language skills and knowledge of the region’s history.

We do not yet collect prices for guide training courses, so they are not included in this article.

What does a tour guide do, and what are they paid for?

A tour guide leads a group around a city, attraction or trail, talks about its history and monuments, and keeps track of the time and route. They usually charge PLN 350 ‑ 600 for a city tour, which also covers preparing the route and liaising with the organiser before the trip.

A guide should not be confused with a tour leader, who accompanies the group throughout the trip and handles logistics. For a school or company trip, the organiser usually pays separately for the local guide and transport: coach hire with driver typically costs 2,000 PLN/day per day. We cover group transport costs in the article coach hire with a driver: price list.

How much does a tour guide earn abroad?

We do not collect rates for guides and holiday representatives abroad because our index covers services in Poland. Earnings abroad depend on the country, travel company and type of contract, while some guides work seasonally for Polish organisers. For comparison, one group tour in Poland typically costs PLN 350 ‑ 600.

How can you book a guide without overpaying?

  • Ask for the price per group and duration. Check how many hours the flat rate covers and how much each additional hour costs.
  • Ask about tickets and headsets. They are not included in the guide’s fee.
  • Check whether the price is net or gross. This makes an important difference when an invoice is issued to a company.
  • Book early during the season. Guides’ diaries fill up quickly in spring.
  • Combine attractions into one route. Two short tours on different days incur two flat-rate charges, while one longer tour costs the flat rate plus around 98 PLN/h for each additional hour.
  • Agree on the meeting and finishing points. Travel by the guide to the other side of the city may be added to the price.
