How many characters does a personalised number plate have?

A personalised number plate has 3 to 5 characters chosen by the owner, preceded by a voivodeship letter and a digit. The first character on the plate is always the voivodeship code, for example W for Mazowieckie or K for Małopolskie. This is followed by a digit from 1 to 9 and then your chosen inscription, made up of letters and digits.

Points to remember when choosing an inscription:

1. Character limit. A name longer than 5 letters must be shortened. For example, “KASIA” will fit, but “KATARZYNA” will not.
2. The voivodeship code is mandatory. You cannot order a plate without the letter of the voivodeship where the car is registered.
3. The number must be available. If someone in the voivodeship already has that inscription with the same digit, you must choose another digit or inscription.
4. The inscription must not be offensive. The office may refuse to issue a plate containing vulgar or offensive wording.

How do you order a personalised number plate?

You order a personalised number plate from the vehicle registration department of the county authority or city office where the car is or will be registered. You can do this when first registering the vehicle, when re-registering it after purchase or at any time for a car that is already being driven with standard plates.

Steps to follow:

1. Check whether the inscription is available, either at the office or through a personalised number plate search tool, if your voivodeship provides one.
2. Submit an application to register the vehicle or change its plates, specifying your chosen identifier.
3. Pay the fees for the personalised plates, a new vehicle registration certificate and stickers.
4. Collect a temporary permit if the car will be driven before the plates are ready.
5. Collect the plates and registration certificate when the office tells you they are ready.

How long do you wait for a personalised number plate?

You wait longer for a personalised number plate than for a standard one because it is made to order, usually from a few days to a few weeks, depending on the office and the plate manufacturer. The office can often issue standard plates immediately from stock.

During this time, you can drive the car with a temporary permit and temporary plates, or with the existing plates if the office allows you to keep them until the new ones are ready. Ask about this when submitting your application so that the car does not have to remain in the garage.

Can personalised number plates be transferred to another car?

A personalised number plate is assigned to a specific vehicle rather than its owner, so it usually stays with the car when it is sold. Is a personalised number plate worth buying?

A personalised number plate makes sense when it forms part of an image, such as a company car bearing a brand name, a collector’s car or a gift.
