How to get a dog passport in 2026: cost, waiting time and documents
indekscen.pl editorial team · published 30 September 2026 · prices according to the 5 October 2026 index
A dog passport is issued by a vet, and the fee for issuing it in 2026 is PLN 190, the same throughout Poland. The dog must already have a microchip (median microchipping cost: PLN 145) and a valid rabies vaccination (median: PLN 79), so for a first trip the total bill may be higher than the passport fee alone.
At a glance (as at 5 October 2026)
- The fee for issuing a dog passport is PLN 190 and is the same at every veterinary practice in Poland.
- Microchipping a dog, without which a passport cannot be issued, usually costs PLN 120 ‑ 175.
- A rabies vaccination for a dog typically costs PLN 77 ‑ 84 per dose, according to 4 price lists collected by indekscen.pl.
- A dog passport is valid for the animal's lifetime, but a current rabies vaccination is required for travel.

A dog passport is a blue booklet without which a dog cannot legally travel abroad on holiday within the European Union. The document itself costs the same everywhere, but if the dog does not yet have a microchip or a current rabies vaccination, the cost of these procedures must be added. Below, we explain step by step how to get a passport, what to take to the vet and how much it all costs according to veterinary practice price lists.
How to get a dog passport step by step
A dog passport is obtained from a veterinary practice in three steps: microchipping, rabies vaccination and issuing the document, which costs PLN 190. Everything can be done in a single appointment if the dog is healthy and the practice has passports available.
- Microchipping. The dog must have a microchip implanted, and its number is entered in the passport. If the dog is already microchipped, the vet will simply scan the number.
- Rabies vaccination. The vaccination is given after microchipping or on the same day, as the microchip number must be recorded in the document before the vaccination is entered. The dog must be at least 12 weeks old.
- Issuing the passport. The vet enters the owner’s details, a description of the dog, the microchip number and vaccination details, then signs and stamps the document.
- Waiting before travelling. After the first rabies vaccination, you usually need to wait 21 days before the dog can cross the border. This waiting period does not apply to subsequent vaccinations given before the previous one expires.
The fourth step catches most people out. If the trip is in two weeks and the dog has never been vaccinated against rabies, the passport can be issued, but the dog is not yet formally allowed to travel.
How much does a dog passport cost with microchipping and vaccination?
The fee for the dog passport itself is PLN 190, according to 4 consistent sources. This rate is set by a regulation of the Minister of Agriculture and has applied since 5 December 2024 (it was previously lower). A vet cannot increase or reduce it, so there is no point looking for a cheaper practice.
The procedures that must take place before the document is issued are different. Microchipping and vaccination are charged at market rates and prices vary between practices:
| Service | Median | Typically | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dog passport | PLN 190 | PLN 190 | 4 |
| Microchipping a dog | PLN 145 | PLN 120 ‑ 175 | 2 |
| Rabies vaccination for a dog | PLN 79 | PLN 77 ‑ 84 | 4 |
| Veterinary appointment | PLN 80 | PLN 58 ‑ 120 | 7 |
Median and typical range from public price lists, as at 5 October 2026. Each price includes a source and quotation on the service page.
| Dog’s situation | What you pay for | How much it costs |
|---|---|---|
| Has a microchip and valid vaccination | passport only | PLN 190 |
| Has a microchip, vaccination has expired | passport and vaccination | PLN 190 and typically PLN 77 ‑ 84 |
| Has neither a microchip nor vaccination | passport, microchip and vaccination | PLN 190, microchipping typically PLN 120 ‑ 175, vaccination typically PLN 77 ‑ 84 |
Some practices also charge for a clinical examination before vaccination. The median cost of a basic veterinary appointment is PLN 80, but this is usually not charged separately when the dog is only being vaccinated. It is worth asking about this when booking the appointment.
Where can you get a dog passport?
A dog passport is issued by a vet authorised to issue passports by the county veterinary officer. Most animal surgeries and clinics have this authorisation, but not every small practice does. Before your appointment, call and ask whether the vet issues passports and has blank documents available.
The passport fee is the same in Warsaw, Poznań and a small town because it is set by law. Only microchipping and vaccination prices may differ. If the dog has a regular vet, the simplest option is to have everything done there: the vet has its vaccination history and knows the dog.
What do you need for a dog passport?
To obtain a dog passport, you need a microchipped dog, a valid rabies vaccination and the owner’s identity document. The vet enters the owner’s first name, surname and address in the passport, so it cannot be issued without the person named as the owner being present, or without their details.
It is worth bringing:
- the dog’s health booklet, if it has one: the vet will copy details of previous vaccinations from it,
- the owner’s identity card,
- the dog: the passport cannot be issued without scanning the microchip,
- a photo of the dog, if you want to include one (it is not compulsory).
How long does it take to get a dog passport?
You usually do not need to wait for a dog passport: a practice with blank documents can issue it immediately during a single appointment. Sometimes you may need to wait a few days if the practice has to order blank passports.
Preparing for travel takes longer if the dog has not previously been vaccinated against rabies. In that case, there is usually a 21-day wait between vaccination and crossing the border. When planning a holiday with your dog, start the formalities at least a month in advance, and even earlier if travelling to a country outside the European Union, as some countries also require a blood test for rabies antibody levels.
How long is a dog passport valid?
A dog passport is valid for the animal’s lifetime and does not need to be replaced. However, the rabies vaccination recorded in the document does have an expiry date: its validity is determined by the vaccine manufacturer and recorded in the passport by the vet. Once it expires, a dog with a passport cannot travel until it has been vaccinated again.
A new passport is generally needed only if the old one has been lost or damaged, or has run out of space for entries. It then costs the same amount, PLN 190.
Can a dog travel abroad without a passport?
No, a dog cannot legally travel abroad within the European Union without a passport, microchip and valid rabies vaccination. Checks at internal EU borders are rare, but carriers check the documents, including airlines, ferry operators and some hotels. Not having a passport may result in the dog being refused boarding or placed in quarantine.
Some countries, including Ireland, Finland, Malta and Norway, also require tapeworm treatment to be recorded in the passport a few days before arrival. It is worth checking the requirements on the embassy’s or carrier’s website before travelling and discussing the health requirements with your vet.
How can you avoid overpaying when getting a passport?
- Do not look for a cheaper passport. The PLN 190 fee is fixed, and a practice offering a ‘cheaper passport’ is most likely charging for something else.
- Compare microchipping and vaccination prices. The cheapest vaccination costs from PLN 30, while the most expensive costs up to PLN 120, so the difference between practices can be significant.
- Check municipal schemes. Many municipalities (gminas) offer free or subsidised dog microchipping, reducing the cost of the first step.
- Plan the vaccination in advance. A booster given before the previous vaccination expires does not require a 21-day waiting period.

Frequently asked questions
Does a dog need a photo in its passport?
What happens if your dog does not have a passport abroad?
Can you get a dog passport online?
Nie, paszport dla psa wystawia lekarz weterynarii podczas wizyty, bo musi sprawdzić czip i wpisać szczepienie. Przez internet można najwyżej umówić termin w gabinecie.
How much does a cat passport cost?
Paszport dla kota kosztuje tyle samo co dla psa, czyli PLN 190, bo opłata za wystawienie dokumentu jest ustalona rozporządzeniem i nie zależy od gatunku zwierzęcia.
Is a dog passport required in Poland?
