Driving instruction is a career that people can enter from almost any industry if they have experience behind the wheel and patience with others. However, getting started costs several thousand PLN and requires several months of study. We have collected the prices of instructor courses from the price lists of WORD centres and private schools, and explain the requirements and costs beyond the course itself.
How much does a category B driving instructor course cost?
A category B driving instructor course most commonly costs PLN 5,000, according to 5 price lists collected by indekscen.pl, and half of the offers fall within the range of PLN 4,800 ‑ 5,800. The cheapest courses, starting at PLN 3,500, are organised by Voivodeship Road Traffic Centres (WORD). The most expensive, costing up to PLN 6,790, are combined category A and B courses.
The course price includes theory and practical classes. It does not include the fee for the state driving instructor exam, medical and psychological assessments or a criminal record certificate. Some centres allow payment in instalments, sometimes for a small additional charge.
How much does it cost to become a driving instructor, including the exam and assessments?
Becoming a driving instructor costs more than the course itself because the price of PLN 4,800 ‑ 5,800 does not include certain fees. Here is a sample budget for a category B driving instructor candidate:
| Item | Cost | Data source |
|---|---|---|
| Category B qualification course | PLN 4,800 ‑ 5,800 | WORD and school price lists |
| Combined category A and B course | up to PLN 6,790 | centre’s price list |
| State driving instructor exam | no data in the index | paid separately |
| Medical and psychological assessments | no data in the index | authorised assessment centre |
| Criminal record certificate | no data in the index | official fee |
| Additional driving tuition before the exam, if needed | 125 ‑ 140 PLN/h per hour | driving school price lists |
We do not collect fees for the driving instructor exam or assessments, so we do not provide their amounts. Ask the centre where you are taking the course about them. Candidates who want to practise exam driving before the test purchase additional hours with an instructor, usually at 135 PLN/h. It is also worth setting aside money for a possible exam resit.
How long does a driving instructor course take?
A driving instructor course includes around 130 hours of theory and 65 to 85 hours of practical training, depending on the category. In practice, it usually takes several months because centres hold classes in the evenings or at weekends so that participants can continue working.
The theory covers road traffic regulations, driving techniques, psychology and education, teaching methods and first aid. Practical training involves not only driving but also conducting lessons with a ‘learner’ under the supervision of the lead instructor. After completing the course, you still need to register for the exam, and waiting times vary by voivodeship.
What do you need to do to become a driving instructor?
To become a driving instructor, you must meet the statutory requirements, complete a qualification course and pass the state exam, then be entered in the register of driving instructors held by the county office. The process usually looks like this:
- Initial requirements. You must be at least 23 years old, have completed at least secondary education and have held a driving licence in the category you wish to teach for several years (at least 2 years for category B).
- Medical and psychological certificates confirming that there are no contraindications to working as a driving instructor.
- Criminal record certificate covering specified offences, including road traffic offences.
- Course for driving instructor candidates, typically costing PLN 4,800 ‑ 5,800.
- State exam, comprising theory and practical sections, before an examination board.
- Entry in the register and issue of a driving instructor ID card by the county office responsible for your place of residence.
Requirements may change, and the details depend on the category, so before enrolling on a course, ask the centre or the local transport department for the current list of documents. Once qualified, a driving instructor must attend annual professional development workshops, which are another recurring cost.
Driving instructor courses and other vocational courses for drivers: price comparison
A driving instructor course is one of the more expensive motoring courses, with a price comparable to a category B driving licence course. category B driving licence course usually costs PLN 4,450 ‑ 6,000, vehicle inspector course costs PLN 3,100 ‑ 3,550, and driver initial qualification (code 95) costs PLN 2,850 ‑ 4,300.

The difference lies in what each course provides. Driving instructor and vehicle inspection technician courses open the way to a new career without requiring the purchase of a vehicle, while an initial driver qualification requires a category C or D driving licence first, which is a separate major expense. We provide detailed driving licence course prices in the article how much does a driving licence cost.
How much can you earn as a driving instructor?
A driving instructor’s earnings depend on the number of hours worked and the form of their arrangement with the school, while the price paid by the learner for an hour of driving provides a useful reference point. An hour of additional category B driving tuition usually costs the learner 125 ‑ 140 PLN/h, with a median of 135 PLN/h. An employed instructor receives part of this amount as salary, while a self-employed instructor earns more but must pay for the car, fuel, insurance and ZUS social insurance contributions.
We do not collect driving instructors’ earnings in the index, so we do not provide figures. In practice, it is best to ask several driving schools in your town or city about their hourly rate for instructors and the number of hours available each month. If the school offers an employment contract, an occupational health examination will also be required, usually costing PLN 125 ‑ 250, although this cost is borne by the employer. Read more in the article occupational health examination.
Is it difficult to become a driving instructor?
Becoming a driving instructor is demanding mainly because of the state exam, which tests not only knowledge of the regulations but also the ability to conduct lessons and drive to a higher standard than required for the driving test. A course costing PLN 4,800 ‑ 5,800 prepares candidates for the exam but does not guarantee a pass. Some candidates take it more than once, and each attempt requires another fee.
The profession also requires resilience to stress: learners make mistakes in urban traffic, while the instructor is responsible for safety. Speaking to an instructor at a local driving school is a good way to assess whether the profession is right for you before enrolling on a course.
How can you reduce the cost of a driving instructor course?
- Check available funding. Unemployed people and jobseekers may receive a referral or training voucher from the labour office, while employed people may obtain funding from the National Training Fund through their employer.
- Ask driving schools about co-funding. Schools facing a shortage of instructors sometimes pay for the course in exchange for a commitment to work for them for a specified period.
- Compare WORD centres and private providers. In the collected price lists, prices range from PLN 3,500 to PLN 6,790, with the difference mainly resulting from the provider and the categories covered.
- Choose the right scope from the start. If you also want to teach motorcyclists, a combined category A and B course may be cheaper than two separate courses.
- Include costs outside the course: the exam, assessments, certificates and travel to classes.
