Penalty points expire automatically two years after the fine is paid, but when the total approaches 24, two years is too long to wait. The remaining option is a paid course at a WORD centre. This is the median from 3 sources: price lists from voivodeship road traffic centres and articles quoting them. The lowest price in the comparison is PLN 1,000, and the highest is PLN 1,200.

How much does it cost to remove 6 penalty points?

Removing 6 penalty points costs the same as one course at a WORD centre, usually PLN 1,050 ‑ 1,150. The course always removes exactly 6 points, no more and no fewer. If you have 4 points on your record, you will pay the same amount, while if you have 18, your total will fall to 12.

How long does a penalty point reduction course take and what does it involve?

A penalty point reduction course consists of 8 hours of classes and is usually completed in one day. It involves classroom-based theory at a WORD centre: traffic regulations and their most common violations, the consequences of accidents and driver behaviour on the road. There is no test at the end, but you must attend the entire course.

How penalty point reduction works, step by step:

1. Check your record. You can view the number of points through the government’s mObywatel service or at a police station. The course is worthwhile if you have a large number of points and have not yet exceeded 24.
2. Choose a WORD centre and date. You can enrol at any centre, not only one in your voivodeship. Compare prices and distances: a cheaper centre in a neighbouring town will often cost less overall, even after travel expenses.
3. Pay and attend the classes. The course fee (PLN 1,050 ‑ 1,150) must be paid before the course. Bring proof of identity.
4. Collect your certificate. The WORD centre reports your completion of the course to the register, after which 6 points are removed.
5. Keep track of the dates. You may take another course after no less than 6 months.

Online penalty point reduction course: does it work?

Penalty point reduction courses are held in person by voivodeship road traffic centres and usually cost PLN 1,050 ‑ 1,150. Among the price lists we collected, we found no centre offering the reduction course remotely. If you come across an offer online to ‘remove points online’, ask directly who issues the certificate and whether it results in points being removed from the register. Online materials may simply be a preparatory course that does not remove any points.

Can you pay to remove penalty points?

You cannot simply buy off or purchase penalty points: the only paid way to reduce them is a course at a WORD centre costing around PLN 1,100. The other option, which is free, is to wait. Since 2022, points have expired after two years, but this period starts on the day the fine is paid, not on the date of the offence. Anyone who delays payment will keep the points on their record for longer.

This is worth considering when making your decision. If your oldest points will expire in a few weeks anyway and you are not at risk of exceeding the limit, the course may be an unnecessary expense. If, however, you are close to 24 points and none will expire soon, the course will usually cost far less than losing your driving licence.

What happens after exceeding 24 points and how much does it cost?

After exceeding 24 penalty points, a more experienced driver is referred for a theory and practical reassessment test and may not drive until they pass it. The test itself costs less than the course, but that is only part of the total expense.

In addition to the test fees, there are usually refresher driving lessons before the practical test, time without a car and the stress of arranging dates at a WORD centre. Who cannot reduce their points by taking the course?

The penalty point reduction course is not available to everyone. The following people cannot take it:

• Drivers who have held a driving licence for less than a year. New drivers are subject to a separate retraining course, for which we do not have prices in the index.
• Drivers who have already exceeded 24 points. At that stage, the course changes nothing and the matter is handled by the county head (starosta).
• People who took the course less than 6 months ago.

The penalty point rules have changed several times in recent years. Before paying for the course, confirm with the WORD centre that it will remove points in your circumstances.

Penalty point reduction in Warsaw, Gdańsk and Lublin: do prices differ?

The price of penalty point reduction depends on the specific WORD centre, not the size of the city, and ranges from PLN 1,000 to PLN 1,200 in the price lists collected. Centres in Warsaw, Gdańsk and Lublin publish their rates online along with their course schedules. We do not currently calculate separate medians for individual cities because each centre has one price and there are too few sources for a reliable comparison.

Practical advice: besides the price, check the next available date. Courses in large cities can fill up several weeks in advance, and every week matters when your points total is close to the limit.

How can you avoid overpaying for penalty point reduction?

• Compare several WORD centres. There are genuine price differences between centres, while the course has the same result at every one.
• Ask about the surcharge for code 78. Some centres charge drivers licensed to drive automatic cars only a higher price.
• Do not pay intermediaries. Enrol directly with the WORD centre without any additional fees.
• Check when your points expire. Sometimes it is enough to wait a few weeks instead of paying PLN 1,100.
