The cheapest lessons start at 40 PLN/h, while experienced tutors preparing students for the Matura and exams such as FCE, CAE or IELTS charge up to 200 PLN/h.

How much does one hour of English tutoring cost?
An hour of English tutoring in Poland most commonly costs 85 PLN/h, according to 5 sources collected by indekscen.pl, with half of all rates falling within the 75 ‑ 110 PLN/h range. The median applies to 60-minute individual lessons. However, many tutors teach in 45‑minute blocks, so always convert the price to a full hour when comparing offers.
The cheapest lessons, starting at 40 PLN/h, are usually provided by language students and people teaching online in smaller towns and cities. At the other end of the scale are certified tutors, native speakers and teachers specialising in exams, who charge up to 200 PLN/h per hour. What determines the price of English tutoring?
The price of English tutoring depends primarily on the aim of the lessons and the teacher’s experience, and only then on the city. The price lists indicate five main factors:
- Aim of the lessons. General help with schoolwork costs less than preparation for the eighth-grade exam, the extended-level Matura or FCE, CAE and IELTS exams.
- Teacher’s experience. A student and a teacher with over a decade of experience charge very different rates. A native speaker usually charges more.
- Lesson format. Online lessons are usually cheaper because the teacher does not spend time travelling.
- Travel to the student. English tutoring at the student’s home may cost more or include an additional travel charge.
- City. Rates are higher in Warsaw and other large cities than in smaller localities. We do not yet publish local prices for this service because we have too few sources from individual cities.
Is PLN 100 a lot for an English lesson?
A rate of around PLN 100 per hour is above the median of 85 PLN/h, but falls within the upper part of the typical range of 75 ‑ 110 PLN/h. That is expensive for general help with current schoolwork. For extended-level Matura or Cambridge exam preparation with an experienced teacher, it is a market rate because such lessons require more work: practice papers, mock exams and marking essays.
Before paying more, ask what is included in the price: whether the tutor prepares materials, marks written work between lessons and conducts mock exams with feedback.
Online or in-person English tutoring: which is cheaper?
Online English tutoring is usually cheaper than in-person lessons because the teacher does not add travel time and costs. The difference is greatest when the teacher travels to the student’s home, particularly outside the centre of a large city.
Online lessons have another advantage: your choice is not limited to teachers in your area, making it easier to find someone with exam preparation experience at a reasonable price. However, for children in the early years of primary school, some parents prefer in-person lessons because young children find it harder to concentrate in front of a screen.
How much do a month and a year of English lessons with a tutor cost?
A month of English tutoring with one lesson a week costs around PLN 340, while two lessons a week cost around PLN 680. The table shows the budget for several typical scenarios, calculated using the median hourly rate:

How much do Matura and FCE preparation cost?
Preparation for the Matura or FCE exam with a tutor usually costs the hourly rate multiplied by the number of lessons, with the rate closer to the upper end of the 75 ‑ 110 PLN/h range. Teachers specialising in exams charge more because they use exam papers and know the marking criteria.
International qualifications also involve a separate exam fee. According to examination centre price lists, english language certificate B2 First (FCE) costs around PLN 799. Other exams cost the following:

English tutoring costs more than maths tutoring: the median for English is 85 PLN/h, compared with 72 PLN/h per hour for maths tuition. The difference is mainly because a large part of the English tutoring market involves preparation for paid international exams and lessons with native speakers.

Affordable English tutoring: how to avoid overpaying
- Start with a trial lesson. Many teachers offer the first lesson at a lower price to assess the student’s level.
- Convert prices to 60 minutes. A rate for 45 minutes looks lower, but after conversion it may be higher than competitors’ rates.
- Ask about packages. For regular lessons once or twice a week, some teachers offer a lower rate for a lesson package.
- Consider online lessons. There are no travel costs, and the choice of teachers is wider.
- Match the teacher to your aim. You do not need a Cambridge examiner to catch up with schoolwork, but it is not worth cutting costs on experience before the extended-level Matura.
