A quick wash for a small car starts at PLN 30, while a wash at a detailing studio can cost up to PLN 130. By comparison, a basic automatic car wash programme costs PLN 20.

A hand car wash costs several times more than an automatic car wash programme, but you are paying for something different: an employee’s time, a wash mitt instead of brushes and attention to areas an automatic wash cannot reach. Below, we have compiled medians from the price lists of hand car washes and detailing studios, compared them with automatic car washes and calculated the annual cost. We also cover services worth adding to a wash and those that are not worth paying extra for.

How much does a hand car wash cost?

A hand car wash usually costs PLN 60 ‑ 120, while the median from 5 price lists collected by indekscen.pl is PLN 83 for an exterior wash of a passenger car. The cheapest quick wash without drying starts at PLN 30, while an exterior wash at a detailing studio costs up to PLN 130.

The price increases with the size of the car. Hand car wash price lists usually have three or four columns: small car, compact car, estate or van, and SUV. The same package for a large SUV can cost several dozen per cent more than a wash for a city car, so compare the column for your type of car when checking price lists. Hand or automatic car wash: which offers better value?

An automatic car wash is several times cheaper: a basic programme costs around PLN 20, while a premium programme with wheel and underbody washing and drying costs around PLN 30. The median for a hand car wash is PLN 83. The difference comes from the time involved: an automatic car wash cleans a car in a few minutes, while an employee at a hand car wash spends between several dozen minutes and an hour on it.

The difference is clear over a year. One wash a month at a hand car wash costs around PLN 1,000 at the median price, compared with around PLN 240 at an automatic car wash. A sensible compromise is to use an automatic or touchless car wash for routine cleaning and a hand car wash several times a year: after winter, before the summer holidays and in autumn, before applying wax. How long does a hand car wash take?

A hand car wash usually takes from 30 minutes for a quick package to an hour for a thorough exterior wash. For example, according to its price list, a Basic wash at a detailing studio in Poznań takes 45 to 60 minutes. Packages that include waxing and cleaning the wheels and the inside of the windows take longer. If the car wash accepts bookings, ask about the duration when making your appointment. At a car wash without bookings, allow extra time for queuing on Saturdays.

Does a hand car wash scratch the paintwork?

A hand car wash is less likely to scratch the paintwork than the brushes at an automatic wash, but only if the employee uses clean mitts and rinses away sand before touching the bodywork. Micro-scratches, known as swirl marks, are most often caused by a dirty mitt, a cloth used on several cars or wiping away dry dust. Better car washes therefore use the two-bucket method: one bucket contains shampoo and the other is used to rinse the mitt.

If scratches are already present, washing alone will not remove them. This requires paintwork polishing: according to price lists, single-stage polishing costs around PLN 575, two-stage polishing around PLN 1,150, and multi-stage paint correction around PLN 2,250.

Which comes first: foam or the main wash?

Active foam or a pre-wash comes first, followed by the main wash with a mitt. The foam loosens sand and mud so they can be rinsed away, preventing the mitt from dragging hard particles across the paintwork. The correct sequence is:

1. Wheels and tyres, using a separate brush, as this is where most brake dust collects.
2. Rinse the entire car with pressurised water, working from top to bottom.
3. Apply active foam for a few minutes without allowing it to dry.
4. Rinse off the foam, then carry out the main wash with a mitt using the two-bucket method.
5. Rinse and dry with a microfibre towel or compressed air.
6. Apply wax or a coating at the end, if included in the package.

If a car wash skips the rinse and goes straight to using a mitt, it is a sign that speed matters more than the paintwork.

Is it worth paying extra for a wash with wax?

A hand wash with wax costs more than a standard wash and usually falls towards the upper end of the PLN 60 ‑ 120 range. Wax does not clean the car. It leaves a thin layer on the paintwork that helps water and dirt run off more easily. The effect lasts from a few weeks to several months, depending on the product and how often the car is washed.

There is therefore no point in choosing wax with every wash. A package with wax in autumn, before salt is spread on the roads, and in spring, after winter, is enough. A standard wash will suffice in between. If you want longer-lasting protection, ask a detailing studio about a ceramic coating. It costs several times more than wax but lasts for years rather than weeks. Before wax or a coating is applied, the paintwork should be clean and free of scratches, which is why detailers often combine these treatments with polishing.

Wax applied automatically at a touchless car wash or as part of an automatic wash programme is cheaper, but does not last as long as wax applied by hand to dry paintwork.

Exterior wash or a complete package including the interior?

The listed price of a hand car wash usually covers the bodywork only. Interior cleaning is a separate item. Car washes offer packages for vacuuming and wiping the dashboard, while complete car upholstery cleaning costs around PLN 300 (leather cleaning costs around PLN 350). It is worth combining both treatments in a single visit before selling the car or after winter.

How can you avoid overpaying for a hand car wash?

• Compare the same price-list column, for the same car size and scope of service, including whether drying is included.
• Do not pay extra for wax with every wash. Wax a few times a year is enough. Between applications, a standard wash at the median price of PLN 83 is perfectly adequate.
• Ask about passes. Some car washes offer every tenth wash free or a cheaper monthly subscription.
• Tar, resin and stickers are not included in the price. If the car has been parked under a tree, ask about the surcharge before the wash.
• Avoid Saturday mornings, when queues are common and rushing compromises attention to detail.
