Ophthalmologist or optician? Eye test costs in 2026 and key differences
indekscen.pl editorial team · published 30 September 2026 · prices according to the 5 October 2026 index
A private ophthalmologist appointment most often costs PLN 300 (typically PLN 290 ‑ 340), while an eye test by an optician or optometrist costs around PLN 125 (typically PLN 100 ‑ 159). An optician can fit glasses or contact lenses, but only an ophthalmologist is a doctor: they can examine the retina, diagnose a condition, prescribe medication and issue a referral.
At a glance (as at 5 October 2026)
- A private ophthalmologist appointment usually costs PLN 290 ‑ 340, and the median from facility price lists is PLN 300.
- An eye test by an optician usually costs PLN 100 ‑ 159, and may be cheaper or free when you buy glasses.
- A basic eye test with an ophthalmology consultation usually costs PLN 280 ‑ 375 at clinics.
- The median cost of laser eye surgery is PLN 3,150, while private cataract surgery costs around PLN 4,200.

When your eyesight deteriorates, the first choice is between an optician’s shop and an ophthalmologist’s consulting room. An optician is usually closer, cheaper and available without a wait, while an ophthalmologist costs more but examines the whole eye, not just visual acuity. We have collected prices from public price lists published by clinics and opticians to show how much each option costs and when the cheaper one is sufficient. This article is not a substitute for medical advice: if you experience pain, sudden deterioration in vision or an injury, see an ophthalmologist immediately.
Where is it better to have an eye test: at an ophthalmologist or an optician?
An eye test by an optician is sufficient if your eyes are healthy and you only want to get or change glasses or contact lenses. It usually costs PLN 100 ‑ 159. See an ophthalmologist if you have symptoms of an eye condition, such as pain, redness, flashes, floaters or double vision, if you have a chronic condition such as diabetes or high blood pressure, if glaucoma runs in your family or if your eyesight has deteriorated suddenly.

The cheapest opticians charge from PLN 50, while chain opticians in major cities charge up to PLN 199. eye test at an optician's usually includes a medical history, visual acuity measurement, selection of lens power and a prescription.
At many opticians, the test is much cheaper or free if you buy glasses there immediately. When fitting contact lenses, the test can cost a nominal amount, around PLN 9, provided that you buy the lenses. When comparing offers, consider the total cost of the test and glasses, not just the test itself.
What happens at your first ophthalmologist appointment?
A first appointment with an ophthalmologist usually lasts between 15 and 30 minutes, or up to an hour if your pupils are dilated. A typical appointment includes:
- Medical history: symptoms, general health conditions, medication and family history of eye conditions.
- Visual acuity measurement using a chart and selection of vision correction, often with an autorefractor.
- Intraocular pressure measurement, important if glaucoma is suspected.
- Slit-lamp examination of the front of the eye.
- Retinal examination, sometimes after administering pupil-dilating drops.
Pupil-dilating drops cause blurred vision and sensitivity to light for several hours, so do not drive to an appointment where they may be used. Bring your current glasses, contact lenses and a list of medications.
Can you see an ophthalmologist through the NFZ?
You can see an ophthalmologist through the NFZ without a referral because ophthalmology is on the list of specialities that do not require one. Waiting times depend on the region and clinic, and current availability can be checked using the NFZ search engine: https://terminyleczenia.nfz.gov.pl/. A private appointment costs PLN 290 ‑ 340, but you can usually get one within a few days.
You need an urgent ophthalmologist appointment if you have an eye injury, sudden loss of vision, flashes and a curtain-like shadow in your field of vision, or severe pain with redness. In these cases, do not wait for a scheduled appointment. Go to a hospital emergency department or an ophthalmology emergency department.
When should you see an ophthalmologist?
A routine ophthalmologist appointment is recommended every one to two years after the age of 40, as the risk of glaucoma and cataracts increases at this age, and more often if you have diabetes or high blood pressure. Children should have their first eye test before starting school. It is best to agree the frequency of check-ups with your doctor.
An ophthalmologist also assesses patients for procedures. The median cost of private private cataract surgery is PLN 4,200 per eye with a monofocal lens, while laser eye surgery costs around PLN 3,150 per eye. For laser eye surgery, the assessment appointment is usually charged separately.

|---|---|---|---|
| Laser eye surgery | PLN 3,150 | PLN 2,800 ‑ 3,800 | 3 |
| Private cataract surgery | PLN 4,200 | PLN 3,950 ‑ 4,750 | 4 |
| Replacement of spectacle lenses | PLN 40 | PLN 35 ‑ 57 | 3 |

What is the difference between an optician and an optometrist?
An optometrist is a specialist with a degree in optometry who conducts more detailed eye tests than an optician. They assess binocular vision, fit contact lenses and can identify symptoms that require a referral to a doctor. In the strict sense, an optician makes glasses according to a prescription. At opticians, eye tests are usually conducted by an optometrist and cost PLN 100 ‑ 159. However, neither is a doctor and neither can replace an ophthalmologist when treatment is required.
Ophthalmologist or optician for contact lenses?
Both an optometrist and an ophthalmologist can fit your first contact lenses, but if you have a corneal condition, dry eyes or have had eye surgery, it is better to start with a doctor. Routine check-ups for contact lens wearers without any problems are often carried out at an optician, where a test may be almost free when you buy contact lenses, costing around PLN 9. If your eyes become red or painful after wearing contact lenses, remove them and see an ophthalmologist, not an optician.
An eye test is usually followed by choosing glasses. The replacement of spectacle lenses service using your existing frames costs around PLN 40 plus the price of the lenses, which may be cheaper than a complete new pair of glasses.
How long does an ophthalmologist appointment take?
An ophthalmologist appointment usually lasts between 15 and 30 minutes for a check-up and glasses prescription. If the doctor dilates your pupils, allow an additional 20 to 30 minutes for the drops to take effect. An eye test by an optician takes a similar amount of time, usually around half an hour, without drops.
How can you avoid overpaying for an eye test?
- Know that you only need glasses? Choose an optician and ask whether the test is cheaper if you buy frames.
- Have symptoms or a chronic condition? See an ophthalmologist straight away to avoid paying twice.
- Ask what the appointment price includes: retinal examination, intraocular pressure measurement, OCT and a glasses prescription.
- Have a medical package from your employer? It often includes ophthalmologist appointments without additional charges. An occupational health doctor may also order an ophthalmology consultation, for example if you work at a computer, as explained in our article on occupational health examinations.
