- A yacht sailing licence course at a sailing school usually costs PLN 1,250 ‑ 1,750, with a median of PLN 1,500.
- The sailing licence exam fee is around PLN 250 and is the same throughout Poland.
- The cheapest sailing course in our sources costs PLN 1,000, while the most expensive costs PLN 1,849.
- A basic certified diving course is more expensive than a sailing course, with a median of PLN 2,400.

In Poland, the yacht sailing licence is the basic qualification that allows you to charter a yacht independently in Masuria or on Zegrze Reservoir. You pay for the licence in three stages: the course fee to the school, the exam fee to the examination board and the document issuance fee to the authority. Below, we break down these costs, compare them with other watersports courses and explain where you can save money. The figures are medians from public sailing school price lists collected in the price index.
How much does a sailing licence cost in 2026?
In 2026, a sailing licence course most commonly costs PLN 1,500, with a typical range of PLN 1,250 ‑ 1,750, according to 4 price lists collected by indekscen.pl. The course includes theoretical and practical training aboard a yacht. You pay separately for the exam, around PLN 250, and for the licence to be issued.
Prices vary considerably: the cheapest offer in our sources is PLN 1,000, while the most expensive is PLN 1,849. The difference mainly depends on what the school includes in the price: accommodation aboard the yacht or at the centre, meals, transport and sometimes even the exam fee. Two courses with similar advertised prices can therefore have very different final costs.
| Item | Cost (median) | Who sets the price |
|---|---|---|
| Yacht sailing licence course | PLN 1,500 | sailing school |
| Typical course price range | PLN 1,250 ‑ 1,750 | sailing school |
| Licence exam | PLN 250 | nationwide rate |
| Licence issuance | small fee, discount for under-26s | nationwide rate |

What makes up the cost of a sailing licence?
The cost of a sailing licence consists of three parts, only the first of which depends on the school you choose. Here is the step-by-step breakdown:
- Course at a sailing school. Median: PLN 1,500. Theory, including regulations, pilotage, meteorology and yacht construction, plus practical training on the water: manoeuvres, preparing and stowing equipment, and approaching a buoy and a quay.
- Exam. Around PLN 250, with the same rate throughout the country. The exam has theoretical and practical sections.
- Licence issuance. A small official fee after passing the exam; school and university students under 26 pay less.
- Costs not included in the price list. Travel to the lake, accommodation if it is not included in the course, meals, sailing gloves and soft-soled shoes.
The most important questions to ask the school are whether accommodation is included and whether the exam takes place at the same location at the end of the course. A residential course in Masuria with accommodation aboard a yacht may have a higher advertised price but a lower final cost than a cheaper course requiring daily travel.
How long does a sailing licence course take?
A sailing licence course usually involves one to two weeks of practical training. One of the schools in our sources, in Wrocław, lists 10 days of training on the water. There is also a theory component, taught in person or online before the trip.
Schools offer several formats:
- One-week or two-week camp in Masuria or by Zegrze Reservoir, usually during the summer holidays. This is the fastest route to a licence.
- Weekend course spread over several weekends, popular in large cities with nearby waters, such as Wrocław, Kraków and Warsaw. Convenient for working people, but it takes longer.
- Individual course, with a dedicated instructor. The most expensive option, but it provides the most time at the helm.
The course format is one of the main factors affecting the price. Other factors include the school and region, discounts for school and university students, and whether the fee includes the exam.
What is the minimum age for a sailing licence?
You can obtain a yacht sailing licence from the age of 14. Minors need the consent of a parent or guardian. Schools often organise separate camps for young people, while school and university students under 26 receive a discount on the licence issuance fee.
The syllabus for an adult sailing licence course is no different from that of a course for young people: it covers the same theory and concludes with the same exam. The organisation is different. Adults are more likely to choose weekend courses or shorter, intensive one-week courses, and schools generally do not provide them with pastoral supervision, which can affect the price.
Sailing licence exam: what does it involve and how much does it cost?
The sailing licence exam costs around PLN 250 and consists of a theory test and a practical exam aboard a yacht. The test covers regulations, pilotage, yacht construction, meteorology and rescue procedures. The practical section assesses manoeuvres under sail, approaching a quay and recovering a person overboard.
Some practical advice before the exam:
- Sailing licence test: practise using questions from previous years. Schools usually include access to a question bank in the course fee.
- Knots (figure-eight, cleat hitch, mooring hitch and bowline) should be second nature, as speed matters during the exam.
- The ‘person overboard’ manoeuvre is the part failed by the most candidates. Ask your instructor for extra practice during the final session.
If you fail the practical section, you will have to pay another exam fee to resit it, so a cheaper course offering little practical training may ultimately prove more expensive.
Sailing licence versus other courses: which is cheaper?
A sailing course is cheaper than a diving course, but several times more expensive than a motorboat licence course. These are the medians in our index:
| Service | Median | Typically | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sailing course | PLN 1,500 | PLN 1,250 ‑ 1,750 | 4 |
| Diving course | PLN 2,400 | PLN 2,050 ‑ 2,700 | 4 |
| Motorboat helmsman course | PLN 615 | PLN 595 ‑ 630 | 2 |
Median and typical range from public price lists, as at 5 October 2026. Each price includes a source and quotation on the service page.
A basic Open Water Diver course has a median price of PLN 2,400, excluding certification and personal equipment costs. Find out more at diving course. A group course for a motorboat licence costs around PLN 615, but only qualifies you to operate motor-powered boats.
If you are collecting qualifications like driving licence categories, see also how much a driving licence costs and excavator course prices. In these cases too, the course fee is only part of the cost, with exam fees making up the rest.
Is a sailing licence worth it?
A sailing licence is worthwhile if you plan to sail every year. According to price lists, a day’s yacht charter in Masuria costs around 745 PLN/day, and without a licence you must also pay for a skipper. For a week-long family cruise, the course quickly pays for itself.
In Poland, you may operate a sailing yacht with a hull length of up to 7.5 m without a licence. This is sufficient for short trips on a lake, but most charter yachts with a cabin and galley are longer. A licence therefore gives you a choice of yachts, not merely permission to set sail.
The next qualification after the yacht sailing licence is the yacht sea skipper licence, which requires sailing experience and a separate course. These courses are not yet included in our index, so we do not provide their prices.
How can you avoid overpaying for a sailing course?
- Compare the final price, not just the advertised one: course, exam, licence issuance, accommodation, meals and travel.
- Ask about the number of hours on the water and the number of students aboard each yacht. Four students per yacht means more time at the helm than seven.
- Check the discounts available for school and university students, early bookings and groups of friends.
- Choose an off-peak date: June and September can be cheaper than July and August, and the waters are less crowded.
- Make sure the exam takes place on site immediately after the course. A separate trip for the exam means additional costs.
