A lifeguard training course is one of the most popular courses taken before the summer holidays: for students, it offers a way to find work at a swimming pool or bathing area, while for swimmers, it is a natural next step. Before enrolling, it is worth knowing how much the entire qualification process costs, not just the course itself. We collected prices from organisers’ price lists and compared them with other water sports courses.

How much does it cost to qualify as a lifeguard, including qualified first aid training?

The full route to working as a lifeguard consists of a lifeguard training course for around PLN 1,600 plus a qualified first aid course, which is not usually included in the price. A lifeguard must hold a valid qualified first aid certificate, so they cannot take up employment without completing this course. We do not yet have the price of a full qualified first aid course in the index, but we do have the price of recertification, which renews the qualification: around PLN 450.

Item Typical price Notes
Lifeguard training course (full) PLN 1,400 ‑ 1,750 theory, swimming pool, open water, exam
Shortened course with a junior lifeguard qualification around PLN 1,000 for those who already hold the junior qualification
Qualified first aid recertification around PLN 450 renewal of the qualified first aid certificate
Basic first aid course PLN 205 ‑ 300 does not replace the qualified first aid certificate required of a lifeguard
Swimming lessons with an instructor (one-to-one) around PLN 120 per lesson if you need to improve your technique before the course

There are also smaller expenses: a medical examination confirming that there are no contraindications, swimwear, fins and goggles, as well as accommodation and travel for residential courses. Ask the organiser exactly what the price includes, such as swimming pool admission, course materials and the exam.

How long does a lifeguard training course take?

A lifeguard training course usually consists of several dozen hours of classes, spread over several weekends during the school year or condensed into an intensive residential course lasting one to two weeks in summer. Weekend courses are chosen by people in employment and school pupils, while residential courses by a lake or the sea are popular before the season begins.

The programme covers theory (regulations, the organisation of water rescue services and water hazards), swimming pool sessions (towing, rescue grips, escaping from a drowning person’s grasp and using equipment) and open-water exercises. The qualified first aid course is taught separately, so allow time for both courses when planning your schedule.

Lifeguard training course: requirements and minimum age

A lifeguard training course requires strong swimming skills, good health and an appropriate age. Organisers usually accept people aged 17 or over, while minors need parental consent. The organiser specifies the exact minimum age and admission requirements in the course regulations.

What you usually need when enrolling:

  1. A medical certificate confirming that there are no contraindications to taking the course or working in water.
  2. The ability to swim several strokes over a distance of several hundred metres within a time limit, assessed during the first class.
  3. Parental consent for minors.
  4. A qualified first aid certificate or enrolment on a qualified first aid course, as you cannot work as a lifeguard without it.

Younger people can begin with a junior lifeguard course. This qualification later reduces the price of the lifeguard training course to around PLN 1,000.

What does the lifeguard exam involve?

The lifeguard exam consists of theoretical and practical sections, with practical skills assessed in a swimming pool and open water. The theoretical section usually takes the form of a test on regulations and rescue principles. In the practical section, candidates swim against the clock, swim underwater for distance, retrieve an object from the bottom, tow a casualty and demonstrate a rescue using equipment such as a rescue buoy or lifebuoy.

After passing the exam, graduates receive a lifeguard ID card that allows them to work at swimming pools and bathing areas. Employers hiring for work by the sea or on large bodies of water often expect additional skills, such as operating a boat or radio, which is why some people immediately choose a more expensive package that includes a radio operator qualification.

The course programme of the individual organiser sets out the exact scope of the exam, time limits and distances. It is worth asking for these before enrolling and checking whether you can meet them, as this is the best indication of whether you need a few swimming lessons with an instructor first.

What is the difference between a WOPR lifeguard and a lifeguard?

Lifeguard is the name of the qualification defined by regulations on safety in water areas, while WOPR is an organisation that runs such courses. In the past, people used the term “WOPR lifeguard” because WOPR awarded lifeguarding qualifications. Today, courses are run by various entities authorised by the relevant minister to provide water rescue services, and lifeguard qualifications are recognised regardless of whether you took the course with WOPR or another organisation.

When choosing a course, do not consider only its name. Check whether the organiser is authorised to provide training and issue lifeguard ID cards. It is also worth checking the exam dates and reviews from graduates.

Lifeguard training and other water sports courses: price comparison

A lifeguard training course costs about the same as a sailing licence course and less than a basic diving course. The median price of a sailing course is PLN 1,500, while the median price of an Open Water Diver course is PLN 2,400.

All three courses have additional costs beyond the training itself: for sailing, these are the exam and the issue of the licence; for diving, certification; and for lifeguarding, the qualified first aid course. How can you avoid overpaying for a lifeguard training course?

  • Compare a WOPR branch with private schools. Prices in our sources range from PLN 1,200 for the cheapest course to PLN 1,900 for the most expensive.
  • Check what is included in the price. Swimming pool admission, open-water sessions, the exam and the ID card should be included in the course fee.
  • Calculate the package price. If you do not have a qualified first aid certificate, ask about a package that includes the course and compare it with the price of taking two separate courses.
  • Qualify as a junior lifeguard first if you are younger. The shortened course later costs around PLN 1,000.
  • Ask about work. Some organisers and swimming pools employ graduates for the season, helping them quickly recoup the cost of the course.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a lifeguard earn?

Zarobków ratowników nie zbieramy w indeksie cen, więc nie podajemy kwot. Stawki zależą od miejsca pracy (basen, kąpielisko, morze), sezonu i doświadczenia. Koszt kursu, około PLN 1,600, wiele osób odrabia w jeden sezon pracy.

Is a lifeguard qualification valid indefinitely?

Can you take a lifeguard course if you cannot swim?

Kwalifikowana pierwsza pomoc to osobny kurs, a część organizatorów sprzedaje pakiet: kurs ratownika wodnego z KPP i uprawnieniami radiooperatora, drożej niż sam kurs za PLN 1,600.
