Swimming lessons are an expense that parents usually plan for the entire school year, while adults tend to plan for several weeks of private lessons. Below, we show how much individual classes at swimming schools cost, the cost per month and term, how group classes differ from one-to-one lessons, and what may be charged in addition to the lesson price. How much do group swimming lessons cost?

According to 3 price lists collected by indekscen.pl, group swimming lessons cost from PLN 60 to PLN 95 per class, with a median of PLN 72. Classes usually last 45 to 60 minutes, with several people per instructor. Quotes from the price lists are available on the swimming lessons page.

Swimming schools rarely sell single sessions. Payment is usually made in advance for a month or a full term, with the price per class calculated by dividing the fee by the number of classes. Typical costs at the median are as follows:

Swimming lessons for children and babies: how do prices differ?

Swimming lessons for school-age children form the basis of the price lists used to calculate the median of PLN 72 per group class. Schools price classes for babies and the youngest children, with a parent in the water, separately. These classes are usually shorter and have smaller groups. We do not yet have a separate median for babies in the index, so it is worth comparing two or three local price lists.

For children, pay attention to how classes are divided by ability: becoming comfortable in the water, learning the basics and improving technique. A child placed in a group that is too advanced may quickly become discouraged, while a group that is too easy means spending money without making progress. Good schools carry out a short assessment during the first class and move the child to the appropriate group at no extra charge.

How much does an hour with a swimming instructor cost?

According to price lists, an hour of private swimming tuition with an instructor costs around PLN 120, considerably more than a group class (PLN 72). In return, the instructor works with just one person, corrects every movement and adjusts the pace, so progress is usually faster.

Private lessons are most often chosen by adults who do not want to learn in front of others, and by children who are afraid of the water and become anxious in a group. A good compromise can be to start with a few private lessons and then move to a group once the learner feels confident in the water.

According to price lists, personal trainer costs around PLN 140 per hour, while ski instructor costs around 140 PLN/h. A private swimming lesson therefore falls within a similar price range to other one-to-one sessions with an instructor.

Adult swimming lessons: group or private lessons?

Group swimming lessons for adults cost about the same as children’s lessons, usually PLN 66 ‑ 84 per class, while private lessons cost around PLN 120. We do not have a separate median for adult groups in the index because schools publish these prices less often than prices for children’s classes.

The advantages of each option are:

• Group classes are cheaper and provide a regular routine because they take place at a fixed time. The drawbacks are the fixed schedule and a pace tailored to the group.
• Private lessons are more expensive but flexible: the time is arranged with the instructor, and the lesson focuses on what the learner needs, such as becoming comfortable in the water, breathing or a particular swimming stroke.
• Small-group classes, for two or three people, are a mid-priced option at some schools.

Adults also usually pay separately for pool admission if the school does not include it in the price. How many lessons does it take to learn to swim?

The number of lessons needed to learn to swim depends on age, confidence in the water and lesson frequency. This is why schools sell swimming lessons by the term rather than as a guaranteed number of lessons required to master the skill. A term of weekly group classes (15 classes) costs around PLN 1,100 at the median.

Factors affecting the speed of progress include:

1. Age. Young children first become comfortable in the water, while older children progress to learning swimming strokes more quickly.
2. Frequency. Classes twice a week provide continuity but cost twice as much: around PLN 580 per month instead of PLN 290.
3. Group size. In a group of several people, each learner receives less attention from the instructor than during a private lesson.
4. Practice outside lessons. Visits to the pool with a parent between lessons help children progress faster.

After a few classes, the instructor can usually assess the learner’s level and advise whether they should move to an improvement group.

What is not included in the price of swimming lessons?

In addition to the price of swimming lessons, you may need to pay for pool admission if the school does not include it, as well as a one-off registration fee or membership fee at some schools. When asking about the price list, check:

• whether pool admission is included in the price of the class or paid separately at the ticket desk,
• whether there is a registration fee, membership fee or insurance charge,
• what happens if you miss a class: whether it can be made up or is forfeited,
• how many people there are in the group per instructor,
• whether payment is monthly or by the term and whether there is a discount for paying for a full term in advance.

You will also need equipment: a swimming costume, swimming cap, goggles, flip-flops and a towel. This is a one-off expense, although for young children who grow quickly it recurs every season.

After learning to swim: what next?

After mastering the basics, children usually move to improvement groups, while older children may join competitive swimming squads.
