A sanatorium referral often arrives after a long wait, bringing with it the question: how much will you have to pay? The good news is that treatments under an NFZ referral are free, and the patient contributes only towards accommodation and meals, at statutory rates that are the same throughout Poland. We explain what determines this contribution, how much 21 days costs and what additional expenses to expect during your stay.

How much does a 21-day NFZ sanatorium stay cost in 2026?

At the median rate, a 21-day NFZ sanatorium stay costs the patient around PLN 670, and typically PLN 570 ‑ 710. This is a contribution towards accommodation and meals, as treatments prescribed by a doctor are funded by the NFZ. The daily rate ranges from 10.60 PLN/day for a shared room without a bathroom outside the high season to 40.90 PLN/day for a single room with a bathroom from May to September.

The median of 32 PLN/day comes from 3 sources describing official rates, collected by indekscen.pl. Details and quotations are available on the stay at a sanatorium (rehabilitation programme) page. The rates are set by the Minister of Health, so before travelling, check whether they have changed since 5 October 2026.

How much do one, two and three weeks at a sanatorium cost?

At the median rate, one week at an NFZ sanatorium costs the patient around PLN 220, while three weeks, the standard stay, costs around PLN 670. The patient contribution for different lengths of stay is as follows:

Length of stay Contribution at the median rate Typical range
7 days PLN 220 PLN 190 ‑ 240
14 days PLN 450 PLN 380 ‑ 480
21 days (standard stay) PLN 670 PLN 570 ‑ 710

Stays shorter than 21 days under an NFZ referral are rare, for example in outpatient treatment. One or two weeks is more commonly a private stay, which has different prices.

How long is a sanatorium stay and how do you get one?

A standard NFZ spa sanatorium stay for adults lasts 21 days, or three weeks, and at the median rate the contribution for the entire stay is around PLN 670. Rehabilitation in a spa hospital and ZUS stays have their own durations, determined by a doctor or ZUS.

The process of obtaining an NFZ sanatorium stay usually works as follows:

  1. Referral from a healthcare doctor, such as a GP or specialist. The doctor issues it electronically.
  2. Assessment by the regional NFZ branch. An NFZ specialist determines whether spa treatment is indicated and decides on its type.
  3. Waiting for an allocation. The waiting time depends on the voivodeship and type of treatment, usually ranging from several months to over a year. You can check the status with the NFZ.
  4. Confirmation of the date and location. The NFZ sends a referral with the name of the spa resort and the date. If the date does not suit you, you can change it, but this usually means waiting longer.
  5. Travel and payment on arrival. You pay the contribution to the sanatorium, usually at the beginning of your stay.

If a referral has been awaiting fulfilment for a long time, the NFZ may require it to be reconfirmed by a doctor. It is best to check the details for your circumstances with your NFZ branch.

What determines the rate at an NFZ sanatorium?

The patient contribution at an NFZ sanatorium depends on just two factors: the room standard and the season. The locality and individual spa resort do not affect the rate, as it is the same throughout Poland.

  1. Room standard. The cheapest option is a shared room without full sanitary facilities, with a bathroom in the corridor, while the most expensive is a single room with a bathroom. Twin rooms and studio rooms fall in between.
  2. Season. Higher rates apply from 1 May to 30 September and lower rates from 1 October to 30 April.

A twin room with a bathroom is the most common allocation, and its rate is close to the median of 32 PLN/day. For 21 days in such a room, the contribution is usually PLN 570 ‑ 710. If you want to reduce the cost, ask about an autumn or winter date when confirming your referral.

What costs are there in addition to the contribution for the stay?

In addition to contributing towards accommodation and meals, an NFZ sanatorium patient pays for travel, the spa fee and treatments outside the prescribed package. These costs are not included in the 32 PLN/day rate.

  • Travel to and from the spa resort.
  • Spa fee for each day of the stay, collected by the spa municipality (gmina). Its amount is set by the municipal council.
  • Additional treatments, such as massage, if you want more than your doctor prescribed. We cover massage prices in the article how much does an hour of massage cost.
  • Contribution for a higher standard, if you request a single room despite being allocated a twin room, provided the sanatorium has vacancies.
  • Expenses during your stay: excursions, cafés and mineral water pump rooms.

How much does a sanatorium stay cost for a pensioner?

An NFZ sanatorium stay costs a pensioner the same as any other insured patient: from 10.60 PLN/day to 40.90 PLN/day, depending on the room and season. There are no separate lower rates for older people. At the median rate, the entire 21-day stay costs around PLN 670.

For pensioners, it is worth noting that stays outside the high season, from October to April, are cheaper, and many older people can travel at any time. If a loved one needs permanent care rather than a course of treatment, we cover the costs in the article care homes for older people.

How much does a private sanatorium stay cost?

A private sanatorium stay without an NFZ referral costs many times more than the NFZ patient contribution because the patient pays the full price of accommodation, meals and treatments. We do not yet have a median for private stays: spa resort price lists differ in their packages, number of treatments and standards, making direct comparisons difficult.

A private stay does have two advantages: you choose the date yourself without waiting in a queue, and you can stay for one week instead of three. When comparing private offers, check how many treatments per day are included, whether there is a medical consultation at the beginning of the stay and whether the spa fee is included.

NFZ sanatorium, ZUS or spa hospital: what is the difference?

Spa treatment takes several forms, and the form determines whether and how much you pay:

  • NFZ spa sanatorium: a 21-day stay, with a patient contribution from 10.60 PLN/day to 40.90 PLN/day. People in employment usually take annual leave for the duration of the stay.
  • NFZ spa hospital: for patients who require hospital care, for example after surgery. There is no patient contribution towards accommodation.
  • Medical rehabilitation through ZUS: for people at risk of becoming unable to work. There is no patient contribution, and an allowance is payable for the duration of the stay.
  • Outpatient treatment: treatments are funded by the NFZ, while patients arrange and pay for their own accommodation and meals.

The doctor issuing the referral decides which option is appropriate for you. For comparison, a day in a private hospital usually costs 2,750 ‑ 3,050 PLN/day. More information is available on the private hospital stay (per day) page.

What will you not find in other comparisons?

Comparisons of sanatorium rates usually provide a table of official daily charges. We calculate the cost of the entire stay at the median and within the typical range, as well as for 7 and 14 days. We also compare the different forms of spa treatment and provide a source for every rate.
