Knee pain after a fall, when walking down stairs or after running is a common reason to have an X-ray. Under the NFZ, you need a referral and may sometimes have to wait, while privately you can simply pay and attend. We checked facility price lists to find out how much a knee X-ray costs and the cost of the next steps: an MRI, an orthopaedic consultation, physiotherapy and, if necessary, surgery.

How much does a private knee X-ray cost?

A private knee X-ray most often costs PLN 75, according to 4 facility price lists collected by indekscen.pl. Half of the prices fall within PLN 61 ‑ 86, with the cheapest imaging centre charging PLN 50 and the most expensive PLN 90. All quotations from price lists are available at knee X-ray.

At most facilities, the price includes two views (front and side) and a radiologist’s report. Cheaper offers sometimes cover only one view or come from hospital imaging departments that also provide paid examinations. When comparing prices, ask how many views are included and whether the price includes the report. X-rays of both knees usually count as two examinations, costing around PLN 150.

Can you have a knee X-ray without a referral?

You can have a knee X-ray without a referral at most private imaging centres, typically paying PLN 61 ‑ 86. A referral is required only if the examination is to be provided free of charge under the NFZ. It can be issued by a GP or specialist.

An examination without a referral has one drawback: the X-ray report alone does not tell you what to do next. It is still worth showing the results to a doctor, who will consider them alongside your symptoms and a physical examination of the knee. Some people book an orthopaedic consultation first, and the orthopaedist orders an X-ray if they consider it necessary. This can help avoid an X-ray that provides little useful information.

Knee X-ray under the NFZ or privately: which offers better value?

A knee X-ray under the NFZ is free of charge but requires a doctor’s referral, while a private examination typically costs PLN 61 ‑ 86 and can be performed on the same day. The wait for the NFZ X-ray itself is not usually long because imaging departments see many patients each day. Obtaining the referral and then seeing a specialist who will assess the results takes longer.

In practice, many people combine both routes: they quickly have a private X-ray for around PLN 75, then take the results to a GP or orthopaedist. If you already have a referral, ask your nearest clinic or hospital about an available appointment, as the wait is often only a few days. In the event of an acute injury, severe pain and swelling that make it impossible to stand on the affected leg, you should go to a hospital admissions department or emergency department, rather than arrange a routine examination.

A private examination is therefore most worthwhile when time matters, for example before a trip or competition, or when a doctor has asked you to bring an X-ray to your next appointment.

How long does a knee X-ray take and how should you prepare?

A knee X-ray usually takes a few minutes, while the exposure itself lasts a fraction of a second. No special preparation is required: simply remove your trousers or roll up the trouser leg and remove any metal objects from around the knee. The radiologist’s report may be available immediately or after one to several days, depending on the facility.

For a standing knee X-ray, the patient stands on both legs so that the joint can be assessed under load. Orthopaedists usually order this type of X-ray when they suspect degenerative changes. If the doctor has specified “standing” or “weight-bearing”, mention this when booking the examination.

What does a knee X-ray show, and what cannot be seen?

A knee X-ray shows the bones: fractures, degenerative changes, joint-space narrowing, osteophytes and the alignment of the kneecap. It does not show soft tissues well, including the menisci, ligaments, cartilage and joint capsule. This is why, following a twisting injury, knee locking or suspected meniscus damage, a doctor will often refer the patient for an ultrasound scan or MRI.

According to price lists collected by indekscen.pl, the costs of the next steps in knee diagnosis and treatment are as follows:

An MRI of one area of the body, such as the knee, costs around PLN 690 privately, or around PLN 940 with contrast. This is several times more than an X-ray, so it is usually performed only when the X-ray and medical examination do not provide an answer.

Knee X-ray, ultrasound or MRI: which should you choose?

The choice of knee examination depends on what the doctor is looking for, and the doctor should order the appropriate test. In simple terms:

Examination What it shows best Typical private price
Knee X-ray bones, fractures, degenerative changes PLN 61 ‑ 86
Knee MRI (without contrast) menisci, ligaments, cartilage, bones around PLN 690
MRI with contrast specific indications determined by a doctor around PLN 940

A knee ultrasound clearly shows effusion, a Baker’s cyst and tendons, and its cost is usually between that of an X-ray and an MRI. We do not yet have a separate median for knee ultrasound scans, so we do not provide a figure.

A sensible sequence for knee pain often looks like this:

  1. A consultation with a doctor (a GP or orthopaedist), including a physical examination of the knee and medical history.
  2. A knee X-ray, if the doctor suspects changes in the bones or wants to rule out a fracture.
  3. An ultrasound scan or MRI, if the symptoms indicate a soft-tissue problem.
  4. Treatment: physiotherapy, medication and, in some cases, surgery.

How much do an orthopaedic consultation and knee treatment cost?

A private orthopaedic consultation most often costs PLN 300, typically PLN 300 ‑ 320. It is worth bringing a disc or link to the X-ray images and the report, as the doctor will examine the images themselves, not just the report. Details are available at private orthopaedist appointment.

If the doctor recommends rehabilitation, a physiotherapy appointment usually costs PLN 160 ‑ 200, while a series of several appointments costs a multiple of this amount, for example, five appointments cost around PLN 900.

If surgery is needed, the bill rises significantly. meniscus (knee) surgery costs around PLN 5,500 privately, while knee arthroscopy most often costs PLN 10,300 (typically PLN 7,000 ‑ 13,500). The price of arthroscopy usually does not include a hospital stay or more complex reconstruction, so you should ask for a full quotation during the assessment. A doctor decides whether surgery is necessary.

How can you avoid overpaying for a knee X-ray?

The difference between the cheapest and most expensive knee X-ray in the price lists is several dozen PLN, so it is worth comparing several imaging centres:

  • Check hospital imaging departments. Hospitals and public clinics often provide paid X-rays and may be cheaper than private healthcare chains.
  • Ask about the number of views and the report. A price excluding the report only appears lower.
  • Get the images in digital form. A disc or online access will be useful to the orthopaedist and for subsequent examinations.
  • Do not repeat the examination unnecessarily. If you have a recent X-ray, show it to the doctor before a new one is ordered.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a referral for a knee X-ray valid?

Can inflammation be seen on a knee X-ray?

RTG kolana pokazuje kości i szerokość szpary stawowej, a stan zapalny tkanek miękkich i wysięk lepiej widać w USG albo rezonansie. Rezonans kolana kosztuje prywatnie około PLN 690. Które badanie wybrać, decyduje lekarz.

How does a standing knee X-ray differ from a standard one?

How much does private knee arthroscopy cost?

Artroskopia kolana prywatnie kosztuje najczęściej PLN 10,300, typowo PLN 7,000 ‑ 13,500. Prostszy zabieg jest tańszy, a naprawa łąkotki czy więzadeł droższa.

Is a knee X-ray safe?
