Back pain, numbness in an arm or a stiff neck are common reasons for a doctor to order a spine X-ray. A referral is required under the NFZ, while for a private examination you simply need to book an appointment at a radiology facility and pay. We checked public facility price lists to find out how much X-rays of individual sections and the entire spine cost, as well as the cost of subsequent steps: an MRI, an orthopaedic consultation and physiotherapy.
How much does a private spine X-ray cost?
A private spine X-ray most often costs PLN 80 for one section, according to 7 facility price lists collected by indekscen.pl. Half of the prices fall within the PLN 80 ‑ 110 range, with the cheapest facility charging PLN 35 and the most expensive PLN 120. All quotations from price lists are available on the spine X-ray page.
The price covers one section in two projections: frontal (AP or PA) and lateral. Most facilities also include a radiologist’s report in the price. It does not, however, include a consultation with a doctor who will assess the result. Cheaper options are usually hospital radiology departments and public clinics that also provide paid examinations. Private diagnostic centres and additional projections tend to cost more.
How much do lumbar, cervical and thoracic spine X-rays cost?
Facility price lists quote similar prices for lumbar, cervical and thoracic spine X-rays, typically PLN 80 ‑ 110 per section. In the cited price lists, two-projection X-rays of the lumbar and thoracic sections cost the same as cervical spine X-rays, with differences depending more on the facility than on the section examined. Additional images and several sections examined at once cost more.
| Examination scope | Typical private price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| One section (cervical, thoracic or lumbar), AP and lateral | PLN 80 ‑ 110 | most common request |
| Two sections, e.g. thoracic and lumbar | around PLN 160 | each section charged separately |
| Entire spine, three sections | around PLN 240 | some facilities have a separate price |
| MRI of one area, without contrast | around PLN 690 | usually only after a doctor’s decision |
An AP and lateral X-ray of the lumbosacral spine is usually listed as one examination of one section, not two separate examinations. Functional X-rays (in flexion and extension) or oblique views are additional projections that increase the price. If your doctor included them on the referral, mention this when booking to ensure that the quoted price is correct.
Can you have a spine X-ray without a referral?
A spine X-ray can be performed privately without a referral at most radiology facilities, typically costing PLN 80 ‑ 110 per section. A referral is required only if the examination is to be provided free of charge under the NFZ. It may be issued by a GP or a specialist.
An X-ray does, however, involve radiation, so even for private examinations some facilities ask about the medical indications or request a doctor’s order. The X-ray report alone also does not explain what to do next. You will still need to show the result to a doctor, who will assess it alongside your symptoms and a physical examination of your back. It is often more sensible to see a doctor first and have the X-ray only if they consider it necessary.
How long is a referral for a spine X-ray valid?
An NFZ referral for a spine X-ray does not have a fixed expiry date, but facilities expect you to book the examination within a reasonable period after it was issued, as the doctor ordered it in relation to your current symptoms. If a long time has passed since it was issued, ask the reception desk whether it will be accepted. No referral is required privately, and the X-ray then costs around PLN 80 per section.
How should you prepare for a lumbar spine X-ray?
A lumbar spine X-ray usually does not require fasting, but some facilities recommend an easily digestible dinner the day before and avoiding foods that cause bloating. Intestinal gas may obscure the image of the lumbosacral vertebrae. Drinking water before the examination is not usually a problem. Rules vary between facilities, so ask about them when booking.
What you should know before visiting the radiology facility:
- Removing clothing. For a spine X-ray, you must remove clothing with metal elements (zips, buttons and underwires) from the area being examined. You will usually remain in your underwear or be given a gown.
- Jewellery and metal. For a cervical spine X-ray, remove necklaces, earrings and hair clips; for a lumbar spine X-ray, remove your belt.
- Pregnancy. Tell the staff before the examination if you are or may be pregnant. A doctor will then decide whether the X-ray is necessary.
- Previous X-rays. Bring your previous results so the radiologist can compare any changes.
- Disc or online access. Ask for digital copies of the images, as they will be useful to your doctor and physiotherapist.
How often can you have a spine X-ray?
There is no set minimum interval between spine X-rays. A doctor decides whether another image is needed based on the medical indications. The radiation dose from a single X-ray is low, but it is higher for the lumbar spine than for a chest X-ray, so examinations should not be repeated unnecessarily. If you have a recent X-ray, show it to your doctor before they order another one.
Spine X-ray, CT or MRI: what do they show and how much do they cost?
A spine X-ray shows bones: the alignment of the vertebrae, spinal curvature, degenerative changes, bone spurs and fractures, including compression fractures. It does not show the intervertebral discs, spinal cord or nerves clearly. For this reason, if a herniated disc or nerve root compression is suspected, a doctor will usually refer you for an MRI, or for a CT scan when a detailed assessment of the bones is needed.
| Service | Median | Typically | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spine X-ray | PLN 80 | PLN 80 ‑ 110 | 7 |
| CT scan | PLN 480 | PLN 435 ‑ 490 | 3 |
| MRI scan | PLN 690 | PLN 600 ‑ 690 | 5 |
Median and typical range from public price lists, as at 5 October 2026. Each price includes a source and quotation on the service page.
A private MRI of one area of the body, such as the lumbar spine, costs around PLN 690, or around PLN 940 with contrast. A cT scan scan of one area has a median price of PLN 480. Both examinations are several times more expensive than an X-ray, so they are usually performed only when the X-ray and medical examination do not provide an answer. A doctor should decide which examination is appropriate.
How much do a follow-up consultation and spine treatment cost?
A private orthopaedic consultation most often costs PLN 300, typically PLN 300 ‑ 320. You can also take your spine X-ray results to a neurologist or GP. Bring the images to the appointment, not just the report. Price details are available on the private orthopaedist appointment page.
The most common treatment for back pain is rehabilitation. A private physiotherapist appointment session usually costs PLN 160 ‑ 200, while a course of five sessions costs around PLN 900. We have physiotherapy prices for 27 cities, from the cheapest to the most expensive:

Physiotherapist appointment: cities from cheapest to most expensive. Median and typical range from public price lists, as at 5 October 2026. Each price includes a source and quotation on the service page.
An initial chiropractor appointment most often costs PLN 275. A chiropractor is not a substitute for a doctor, and it is advisable to have recent images and your doctor’s approval before spinal manipulation. Surgery is a last resort: private spinal surgery costs around PLN 14,500, while stabilisation with an implant costs around PLN 19,000. A specialist decides whether surgery is necessary.
How can you avoid overpaying for a spine X-ray?
The difference between the cheapest and most expensive spine X-ray in price lists is several dozen PLN per section, and proportionally more for three sections:
- Check hospital radiology departments and public clinics. They often provide paid X-rays more cheaply than private chains.
- Ask about the number of projections and the report. A price without a report only appears lower.
- Have only the sections requested by your doctor examined. The entire spine means three times the cost and three times the radiation dose.
- Do not repeat the examination unnecessarily. A recent X-ray from another facility will usually be sufficient.
Prices for other X-rays are similar, as described in our articles on private knee X-rays and private chest X-rays.
