A vehicle appraiser can help in several very different situations: a dispute with an insurer over the amount of compensation, a statutory warranty claim for a car bought with a defect, a valuation for a public authority, leasing or the division of an estate. Price lists give a different amount for each of these services. We have collected them in one place so you can easily check whether a quote is reasonable.

Appraiser’s service Price according to price lists When it is needed
Passenger car valuation typically PLN 240 ‑ 365 employment office, leasing, inheritance, sale, dispute over a total loss
Technical opinion, statutory warranty claim around PLN 500 defect discovered after buying a car, dispute with the seller
Inspection involving travel by the appraiser around PLN 100 the car cannot be taken to the appraiser’s premises

Company price lists also distinguish between different purposes of valuation: a valuation for an employment office is charged at a different rate from one for a court or leasing company. The type of vehicle also makes a difference: a motorcycle may be valued at the same rate as a passenger car, while a lorry or classic vehicle costs more. Courier delivery of documents is sometimes charged separately.

How much does an appraiser’s expert report cost?

An expert report, meaning a technical opinion from a vehicle appraiser, costs around PLN 500, which is more than a valuation alone (PLN 300). A technical opinion determines what is defective, when the defect arose and what caused it, for example whether it already existed when the car was bought. You need such an opinion when making a statutory warranty claim for a car or disputing an unsuccessful repair with a garage.

Before commissioning an opinion, it is worth having a cheaper diagnostic test done. car computer diagnostics usually costs PLN 150 ‑ 185, or around PLN 375 at an authorised dealer. A printout of control unit fault codes can later be an important attachment to the opinion.

What does a vehicle appraiser’s valuation include?

A vehicle appraiser’s valuation is a written document containing the vehicle’s details, a description of its technical condition following inspection, its equipment, mileage and calculated market value on a specific date. Appraisers usually use specialist systems containing used-car price data and adjust the result for the car’s condition, repair history and optional equipment. Photographs from the inspection are attached to the valuation.

A repair estimate is a different document: it calculates how much repairing the damage should cost, including parts and labour hours. In a dispute with an insurer, both are often needed: a repair estimate if the car can be repaired, and a valuation if it may be declared a total loss. When placing the order, state clearly which document you need, as this affects the price.

Can an appraiser inspect a car before purchase?

An appraiser can inspect a used car before purchase, but in practice people more often commission a check by a mechanic or at a vehicle inspection station for this purpose. An appraiser is useful if you want a written opinion on the car’s condition and value, for example when buying a more expensive car or purchasing from a business. The valuation then usually costs PLN 240 ‑ 365, with an additional travel fee if the inspection takes place at the seller’s premises.

A cheaper supplement is computer diagnostics for PLN 165 and a test drive. An appraiser’s opinion has the advantage that it may prove useful later if a hidden defect emerges and you need to make a statutory warranty claim.

When is it worth hiring an appraiser?

It is worth hiring an appraiser when the amount in dispute clearly exceeds the cost of the valuation, which is PLN 240 ‑ 365. The most common situations are:

  1. An underestimated third-party liability insurance payout. The insurer estimates the repair using its own rates, while the garage charges more. For comparison, respraying one body panel usually costs PLN 545 ‑ 770, while bodywork repair (wheel arch) costs PLN 395 ‑ 750, depending on the scope of work.
  2. Total loss. The dispute then concerns the value of the car before the damage and its salvage value, which is a typical task for a valuation.
  3. A claim concerning a car after purchase. A technical opinion helps prove that the defect already existed.
  4. A valuation for a public authority, leasing company or inheritance. An opinion is often simply required in these cases.

It is not worth paying an appraiser when the difference in the repair estimate is less than the price of the opinion, unless the case will go to court anyway.

Who covers the appraiser’s costs?

The person who commissions the appraiser covers the cost, usually the owner of the car. In a claim under the at-fault driver’s third-party liability insurance, their insurer may reimburse the cost of a private valuation if the opinion was necessary to determine the amount of compensation, for example because the insurer had underestimated it. Keep the invoice and attach it to your appeal. It is best to ask a lawyer or Poland’s Financial Ombudsman whether reimbursement is possible in your case.

In a court dispute, the party requesting a court-appointed expert initially advances the cost, and the court allocates the costs at the end according to the outcome of the case. According to our data, legal advice from an advocate costs around PLN 325.

How much does a vehicle appraiser cost in Warsaw, Kraków and other cities?

We do not yet include vehicle appraisers’ prices by city in the index, so we do not give local medians. Price lists do show, however, that differences between cities are smaller than differences between the scopes of services: in large cities, a valuation usually costs about the same as the national median, PLN 300. The cost rises when the appraiser travels outside the city, as travel is charged separately, starting at around PLN 100.

How can you avoid overpaying an appraiser?

  • Explain the purpose of the valuation at the outset. A valuation for an employment office is simpler and cheaper than an opinion for court proceedings.
  • Ask whether travel is included in the price. If the car is roadworthy, take it to the appraiser’s premises.
  • Ask for a written quote specifying the scope: a valuation alone, a repair estimate or a full technical opinion.
  • Check their credentials. For court proceedings and major disputes, choose an appraiser with appropriate qualifications and experience in similar cases.
  • Gather the documents in advance: the vehicle registration document, the insurer’s repair estimate, photographs of the damage and garage invoices.
