Wallpaper is making a comeback in homes, most often as a single feature wall in the living room or bedroom. However, quotes can easily become confusing: one tradesperson gives a rate per m² of wall, another per roll, a third includes old wallpaper removal and priming, while a fourth does not. We break the cost down into individual items based on public price lists, making it easier to compare quotes and calculate the cost for your own room.
How much does wallpapering labour cost?
Labour for wallpapering walls most commonly costs 45 PLN/m², with half of price lists falling within 35 ‑ 50 PLN/m². This is the median from 3 price lists and guides collected by indekscen.pl. Details and sources are available at wallpapering. The cheapest quotes start at 10 PLN/m², while wallpaper that requires pattern matching can cost up to 65 PLN/m².
The rate per m² usually includes cutting the drops, applying adhesive, hanging the wallpaper and finishing around skirting boards and sockets. It usually excludes:
- surface preparation, including priming and repairing defects,
- removing old wallpaper,
- the wallpaper and adhesive themselves, meaning materials,
- wallpapering doors, recesses and other non-standard features, which are charged separately.
Wallpapering price per m2: walls, ceilings and preparation
Wallpapering a ceiling costs around 84 PLN/m² for labour, clearly more than walls because the work is done overhead, from scaffolding or a ladder, and often requires two people. The table below shows the items that make up a typical bill:
| Item | Typical rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Wallpapering walls | 35 ‑ 50 PLN/m² | labour, excluding wallpaper and adhesive |
| Wallpapering a ceiling | around 84 PLN/m² | labour |
| Removing old wallpaper | 26 ‑ 34 PLN/m² | excluding filling after removal |
| Skim coating | 46 ‑ 54 PLN/m² | if the wall is in poor condition after removal |
| Painting walls for comparison | 18 ‑ 30 PLN/m² | two coats, labour |
| Service | Median | Typically | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wallpapering | 45 PLN/m² | 35 ‑ 50 PLN/m² | 3 |
| Wallpaper removal | 33 PLN/m² | 26 ‑ 34 PLN/m² | 3 |
| Gypsum skim coating | 48 PLN/m² | 46 ‑ 54 PLN/m² | 6 |
| Wall painting | 22 PLN/m² | 18 ‑ 30 PLN/m² | 33 |
Median and typical range from public price lists, as at 5 October 2026. Each price includes a source and quotation on the service page.
The price per metre (per m²) is calculated from the wall area, not the floor area. Some tradespeople quote per roll or per drop. In that case, ask them to convert the rate to m², otherwise you will not be able to compare quotes.
How much does wallpapering a room cost?
Wallpapering a room with a floor area of around 12 m², or around 30 m² of wall area after subtracting the window and door, most commonly costs PLN 1,400 for labour alone (typically PLN 1,100 ‑ 1,500). If there is old wallpaper on the walls, removing it costs an additional PLN 990 or so. Here is an example for a room of this size:
| Scope of work, 30 m² of walls | Labour |
|---|---|
| Wallpapering only | around PLN 1,400 |
| Removing old wallpaper | around PLN 990 |
| Skim coating after removal, if required | around PLN 1,400 |
| For comparison: two coats of paint | around PLN 660 |
You also need wallpaper, with extra allowed for pattern matching, and adhesive. You choose the materials yourself, and their price depends on the type: paper wallpaper is the cheapest, vinyl and non-woven wallpaper cost more, while fibreglass and commercial-grade wallpaper are the most expensive.
How much does hanging 10 m of wallpaper cost?
Wallpapering 10 m² of wall costs around PLN 450 for labour (typically PLN 350 ‑ 500). This is roughly the size of a single feature wall behind a bed or sofa. For such a small job, check whether the tradesperson has a minimum charge or a call-out fee, as these can make up most of the bill when only a few metres are involved. It may be more economical to have the same team wallpaper one wall and paint the others.
Which costs more: painting or wallpapering?
Wallpapering costs more than painting: labour is usually 45 PLN/m², while applying two coats of paint to walls costs around 22 PLN/m², which is clearly less. Wallpaper as a material also usually costs more than paint for the same area. Details of painters’ rates, including rates in individual cities, are available at wall painting.
Wallpaper does, however, offer advantages that paint cannot:
- Pattern and texture. A concrete, wood or fabric effect, or a botanical pattern, without hiring a decorator.
- Concealing uneven surfaces. Thicker non-woven or fibreglass wallpaper can cover minor cracks where paint would not work well.
- Durability. Vinyl and fibreglass wallpaper can be washed, making it suitable for hallways and kitchens.
Paint wins on price, ease of touch-ups and the fact that nothing needs to be removed when changing colour. In practice, the most common combination is one wallpapered wall with the rest painted.
How much does filling after wallpaper removal cost?
The cost of filling after wallpaper removal depends on the condition of the wall: a full skim coat most commonly costs 48 PLN/m² for labour (typically 46 ‑ 54 PLN/m²), while localised repairs are sufficient if the wall is in good condition. Wallpaper removal alone, without filling, is priced separately, usually at 26 ‑ 34 PLN/m². Removal costs more when the wallpaper is firmly bonded, has been painted over or has been applied in several layers.
After removing the wallpaper, the wall must be cleaned of adhesive residue, primed and any defects filled. If the old plaster underneath is cracked, the tradesperson will recommend skim coating the entire surface. This is usually necessary before painting, while localised repairs are often sufficient under new, thick wallpaper.
What affects the price of wallpapering?
The price of wallpapering depends mainly on the type of wallpaper and the condition of the surface. In order:
- Type of wallpaper. Paper wallpaper is delicate and tears easily, non-woven wallpaper is the easiest to hang, vinyl and fibreglass wallpaper are heavier, and commercial-grade wallpaper requires experience.
- Pattern. Wallpaper with a pattern repeat requires the drops to be matched, which extends the job and increases material use.
- Surface. Priming, removing old wallpaper and filling are separate items.
- Location. Ceilings, window recesses, door recesses and external corners cost more than a plain wall.
- Region. Tradespeople’s rates are usually higher in large cities.
How long does wallpapering take?
An experienced tradesperson can usually wallpaper a single wall of around 10 m² in a few hours, while an entire room takes one to two working days. Removing old wallpaper and filling extend the job because skim coat and primer must dry before the wallpaper is hung. After installation, wallpaper takes around a day to dry. During this time, the room should not be exposed to draughts or strong heating.
How can you avoid overpaying for wallpapering?
- Ask for a quote per m² of wall, itemised into preparation, removal, wallpapering and materials.
- Ask who will buy the wallpaper and adhesive. If it is the tradesperson, request the product name and price in writing.
- Buy wallpaper from a single batch and allow extra for pattern matching to avoid differences in shade.
- Check the condition of the wall before obtaining a quote. Hidden defects under old wallpaper are the most common cause of extra charges.
- Combine jobs. Having one team handle painting, skim coating and wallpapering is usually cheaper than placing three separate orders. We cover the cost of a complete renovation in the article how much does renovating a flat cost, and ceiling finishes in suspended or stretch ceiling.
