The tests most commonly recommended before a trichologist consultation are a full blood count, ferritin, TSH, vitamin D and zinc. Together, they cost several times less than the consultation itself. The results help check the most common causes of hair loss straight away: iron deficiency, thyroid disorders and vitamin deficiencies. A trichologist may request a different set of tests, so it is worth asking the clinic what it requires before booking.

You cannot see a trichologist through the NFZ because trichology is not a medical specialty in Poland and trichology clinics operate privately. Under the NFZ, you can report hair loss to your GP, who can order basic blood tests and, if necessary, refer you to a dermatologist or endocrinologist. Waiting times for specialists can be long, so some people choose a private consultation.

Trichologist or dermatologist: who should you see about hair loss?

Private consultations with trichologists and dermatologists cost similar amounts: the median price of a trichologist consultation is PLN 275, compared with PLN 270 for a dermatologist. The difference lies in their scope of practice. A dermatologist is a doctor who diagnoses conditions, prescribes prescription medicines and identifies diseases of the scalp. A trichologist is usually a cosmetologist or another specialist who has completed trichology courses and assesses the condition of the hair, provides in-clinic treatments and recommends hair care.

How much does treatment by a trichologist cost?

Treatment by a trichologist usually involves a series of sessions rather than a single visit, so the total cost is the price per session multiplied by the number of sessions. For a course of several in-clinic sessions at PLN 275 each, four appointments cost around PLN 1,100, while six cost around PLN 1,700. The trichologist determines the exact treatment plan and number of sessions during the initial consultation.

The cost of treatment may include:

1. A consultation with trichoscopy, which involves examining the scalp under magnification.
2. Blood tests ordered before treatment or after the initial consultation.
3. In-clinic treatments: peels, ampoules and stimulation, or, as a more expensive option, needle mesotherapy.
4. Products to use at home: shampoos, scalp lotions and supplements, which clinics often sell on site.
5. Follow-up appointments, usually every few weeks, to compare images of the scalp.

Scalp mesotherapy: price per session

Scalp needle mesotherapy costs around PLN 560 per session, which is considerably more than a standard trichologist consultation. A preparation containing vitamins, amino acids or peptides is administered through small injections into the scalp, and the treatment is provided as a series of sessions. Only then do they select in-clinic treatments and a home hair-care routine. No single remedy works for everyone, so do not buy expensive treatments without first identifying the cause.

This is many times the cost of a year of trichology treatment, so clinics usually assess the patient’s suitability during a consultation first.

How should you prepare for a trichologist consultation?

Bring your blood test results, a list of the medicines and supplements you take, and information on when the hair loss began. Do not wash your hair on the day of the appointment or the day before, unless the clinic advises otherwise, and do not use styling products, as they make it harder to assess the scalp. It is worth bringing photographs of your hair from several months ago to compare its density.

How can you avoid overpaying at a trichologist?

• Have blood tests before your first consultation. A consultation is more productive when you bring your results, and laboratory tests can be cheaper than those ordered through the clinic.
