A home visit from a vet adds travel costs to the bill.
At a glance (as at 5 October 2026)
- Dog euthanasia at a veterinary practice usually costs PLN 115 ‑ 225, with a median of PLN 175.
- Communal dog cremation, without the ashes being returned, costs around PLN 450.

The decision to have a dog put to sleep is difficult, and the bill arrives at a time when no one feels able to compare price lists. That is why we have brought together everything you may have to pay for during this period: the procedure itself (dog euthanasia), a possible home visit and what happens to the dog’s body afterwards. The figures come from 7 sources for euthanasia itself and 3 for cremation, collected by indekscen.pl. Search results usually give you a single price range; we show the median, the typical range and each cost component separately.
How much do dog euthanasia and disposal cost in total?
Dog euthanasia and disposal of the body are two separate services with two separate charges. The procedure itself at a veterinary practice has a median price of PLN 175, typically PLN 115 ‑ 225. There is also the final handling of the body, with a choice between communal cremation (around PLN 450) and individual cremation with the ashes returned (dog cremation: median PLN 700, typically PLN 650 ‑ 875).
With communal cremation, the dog’s body is cremated together with other animals and the ashes are not returned to the owner. With individual cremation, you receive an urn containing your dog’s ashes. The difference in price between these options can be twofold or even threefold, so it is worth deciding calmly before the day of the procedure arrives.
| Service | Median | Typically | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dog euthanasia | PLN 175 | PLN 115 ‑ 225 | 7 |
| Dog cremation | PLN 700 | PLN 650 ‑ 875 | 3 |
| Cat euthanasia | PLN 60 | PLN 51 ‑ 105 | 3 |
| Veterinary appointment | PLN 80 | PLN 58 ‑ 120 | 7 |

Many veterinary practices work with a pet crematorium and arrange collection of the body themselves. You then receive one invoice, but ask which items it includes: the procedure, cremation, transport and the urn. This makes it easier to compare the practice’s offer with that of a crematorium you arrange yourself.
How much does it cost to have a dog put to sleep at a veterinary practice?
According to the collected price lists and guides, dog euthanasia at a veterinary practice costs from PLN 50 to PLN 500, with half of the sources falling within the range of PLN 115 ‑ 225. The median of PLN 175 is a useful benchmark for a medium-sized dog.
Four factors affect the price:
- The dog’s weight. The dose of medication depends on body weight, so a large dog requires more of it.
- The price list and region. Clinics in large cities usually charge more than practices in smaller localities, just as they do for a regular consultation (the median consultation price is PLN 145 in large cities and PLN 85 in smaller ones).
- The location of the procedure. A veterinary practice is cheaper than a home visit because there is no travel charge.
- The time. A procedure at night, at the weekend or on a public holiday, especially at a 24-hour clinic, costs more than during normal opening hours.
The price usually covers the procedure itself and the medication. It does not include cremation, a plot at a pet cemetery or an urn. Some practices also charge for a consultation before the procedure.
How much does it cost to put a 30 kg dog, such as a German Shepherd, to sleep?
Euthanising a large dog weighing 30 kg or more usually costs more than the median of PLN 175, because the vet administers a larger dose of medication. For a German Shepherd or Labrador, expect to pay towards the upper end of the typical range of PLN 115 ‑ 225, or even PLN 500 at more expensive clinics.
Weight also increases the cost of cremation. Crematorium price lists use weight bands, so individual cremation of a large dog will be closer to the upper end of the PLN 650 ‑ 875 range. We do not have separate medians for specific breeds because sources provide prices by range rather than by breed.
How much does it cost to have a dog put to sleep at home?
Having a dog put to sleep at home costs more than at a veterinary practice because the vet’s travel charge is added to the price of the procedure. We do not have a separate median for dog euthanasia at home, as sources rarely provide one. Cats offer a useful benchmark: cat euthanasia at home, including travel, costs around PLN 225, which is considerably more than at a veterinary practice (PLN 60). The base price for a dog is higher because the procedure itself costs PLN 175.
A home visit may be appropriate when the dog does not cope well with travel, is very large and unable to walk, or when the family wants to say goodbye in peaceful surroundings. When making the appointment, ask:
- whether the price includes travel and how much travel outside the town or city costs,
- whether the vet will take the dog’s body to the crematorium and how much this costs,
- whether an evening or weekend visit costs more.
Dog euthanasia: what happens to the body?
After a dog has been put to sleep, there are three options in practice: communal cremation, individual cremation with an urn, or burial. Communal cremation costs around PLN 450 and is usually arranged by the veterinary practice. Individual cremation has a median price of PLN 700; crematoriums sometimes add a surcharge for collection at night or on a public holiday, while keepsakes such as a decorative urn or paw print are charged separately.
| Dog cremation: option | Median | Typically | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic service | PLN 700 | PLN 650 ‑ 875 | 3 |
| communal cremation (without the return of ashes) | PLN 450 | PLN 320 ‑ 470 | 3 |

Burial at a pet cemetery is another option, but our index does not yet include prices for plots at such cemeteries. The rules on burying a dog on your own property depend on local regulations, so ask a vet or your municipal office before making this decision. If the dog was microchipped, it is also worth reporting its death to the database where it was registered.
How long does dog euthanasia take, and does it hurt?
Dog euthanasia usually takes between a few and around fifteen minutes. The standard procedure is to first administer a sedative or anaesthetic, which causes the dog to fall asleep, followed by a medication that stops the heart. This means the dog should not feel pain or fear from the final injection.
It is worth discussing the procedure with the vet in advance: ask which medications will be administered, whether you can stay with your dog and how much time you will have to say goodbye. The decision about when euthanasia is appropriate is made jointly by the vet and the owner, and the vet is the right person to ask about the prognosis and whether any other treatment options remain.
Do you pay for dog euthanasia before the procedure?
Dog euthanasia is usually paid for on the day of the procedure, like any other service at a veterinary practice, while cremation is settled separately with the practice or directly with the crematorium. If you know that the time is approaching, ask in advance about payment methods and whether cremation must be paid for upfront. This means you will not have to deal with formalities on the day you say goodbye. It is also worth checking whether the crematorium provides confirmation of individual cremation. Many do, and it gives you confidence that the urn contains your dog’s ashes.
Dog euthanasia versus cat euthanasia: why is there a price difference?
Cat euthanasia costs considerably less than dog euthanasia: the median is PLN 60, typically PLN 51 ‑ 105, compared with PLN 175 for a dog. A cat usually weighs only a few kilograms, so the dose of medication is lower. According to the sources, cat cremation after euthanasia costs around PLN 675, with the cost mainly determined by whether you choose communal or individual cremation.
How can you avoid overpaying at a difficult time?
It is worth arranging several things in advance if your dog is elderly or chronically ill:
- Ask the veterinary practice for an itemised breakdown of costs: the procedure, consultation, cremation and transport.
- Compare the veterinary practice’s offer with the crematorium’s: some crematoriums collect the body directly from the practice or your home.
- Decide on the type of cremation without pressure: communal cremation usually costs several times less than individual cremation with an urn.
- Ask about out-of-hours surcharges: evenings, weekends and public holidays increase the cost of both the visit and cremation.
