An alcohol implant, also known as Esperal implantation, most often costs PLN 925 in Poland, while half of facility price lists fall within the range of PLN 750 ‑ 1,300. The cheapest options, where the patient supplies the medication, start from PLN 349, a VIP package costs around PLN 1,499, and implantation combined with alcohol detox around PLN 3,000.

Getting an alcohol implant is a decision usually made at a difficult time: after a drinking binge, following a conversation with family or at the request of loved ones. It is therefore worth knowing in advance what the price includes and why the same service costs several hundred PLN at one facility and several times as much at another. We have collected price lists from practices and clinics in different cities and broken the cost down by option.

How much does an alcohol implant cost?

An alcohol implant most often costs PLN 925 per procedure, according to 9 price lists collected by indekscen.pl. Half of the facilities charge between PLN 750 ‑ 1,300, the cheapest option costs PLN 349, and the most expensive packages reach PLN 2,200. The price usually includes medical assessment, local anaesthetic and implantation of the tablets under the skin.

Four factors affect the price:

1. Who supplies the medication. The cheapest options cover the implantation of medication that the patient buys from a pharmacy with a prescription and brings with them. The price is higher when the facility supplies the medication.
2. Procedure option. A basic, comfort or VIP package with dissolvable stitches and antibiotic cover.
3. Detox before the procedure. After a drinking binge, the facility may first suggest detoxification lasting from 6 to 12 hours, which significantly increases the price.
4. City and facility. Differences between practices in the same city can be greater than those between cities.

VIP or basic package: comparison of options

Esperal implantation options differ mainly in convenience and what happens before the procedure, rather than in the medication itself. These are the median prices according to the price lists:

Dissolvable stitches save you a visit to have them removed, but do not affect how the medication works. If the patient has been sober for several days, there is no need to pay extra for detox.

How long does an Esperal implant work?

According to facility descriptions, an Esperal implant usually works for 8 to 12 months, depending on the dose and the patient’s metabolism. After this time, some people choose to have another implant, which costs the same as the first one, usually PLN 750 ‑ 1,300.

Throughout this period, patients must not drink alcohol or use products containing it, including some medicines in syrup form, mouthwashes, alcohol-based cosmetics and even dishes containing alcohol in the sauce. The reaction to alcohol (flushing, heart palpitations, shortness of breath and a drop in blood pressure) can be dangerous, so the doctor explains it thoroughly before the procedure.

Implant or tablets: which is better?

The implant and tablets work in a similar way because they contain the same active substance (disulfiram), but differ in who is responsible for regular use. The prescription tablets are taken orally and can easily be discontinued, so they work only while the patient is willing to take them. The implant works for months without requiring a daily decision, which is why some patients and families choose it as a stronger safeguard.

In terms of cost, tablets are cheaper initially because they do not require a procedure, but they must be purchased regularly. The implant is a one-off expense of around PLN 925 for several months. The doctor decides which form to use after speaking with the patient and assessing contraindications, such as heart or liver disease and certain medications.

How to arrange Esperal implantation step by step

Esperal implantation is arranged at a private addiction treatment practice or a clinic that performs the procedure, usually without a referral. The typical process is as follows:

1. Book an appointment by phone or online, asking about the price of your chosen option and whether the medication is included.
2. Period of sobriety before the procedure. Facilities require the patient to be sober. The doctor will explain the exact requirement and may suggest detox first after a drinking binge.
3. Medical assessment: medical history, blood pressure measurement, sometimes a breathalyser test, and a discussion of contraindications.
4. Written consent from the patient. Esperal is not implanted without the informed consent of the person receiving it. Their family cannot make this decision on their behalf.
5. Procedure under local anaesthetic, usually lasting several minutes.
6. Check-up and possible removal of stitches after around a week, unless dissolvable stitches were used.

Esperal implantation in Warsaw, Poznań and other cities

We do not yet have median Esperal implantation prices for individual cities in the index because we have collected only isolated price lists in most cities. Among the sources collected, the cheapest options came from practices in Poznań and Kraków, while the most expensive packages came from clinics offering implantation with detox. Large cities such as Warsaw, Poznań and Gdańsk have several facilities, so it is worth comparing at least two offers for the same option.

Some facilities in large cities offer Esperal implantation at the patient’s home, usually with an additional travel charge. When considering this service, ask whether the doctor will conduct a full medical assessment on site.

What other treatment costs are there besides the implant?

An alcohol implant is usually only one part of treatment, not the whole of it. Doctors recommend combining it with addiction therapy because Esperal only discourages drinking and does not address its causes. Private treatment may involve the following costs:

• Individual psychotherapy session: typically PLN 245 ‑ 275, with four sessions per month costing around PLN 1,000.
• Psychiatrist consultation: typically PLN 410 ‑ 535, when medication or a mental health assessment is needed.
• Session with a psychologist: median price PLN 170.
• Family therapy for loved ones: median price PLN 350 per session.

Therapy at an NFZ (Polish public health insurance) addiction treatment clinic is free and does not require a referral, although there may be a waiting list. How can you avoid overpaying for an alcohol implant?

• Compare the same option. A price quoted as ‘from’ usually applies to implantation using medication supplied by the patient, not a package including medication from the facility.
• Ask what the price includes: medical assessment, medication, stitches, follow-up appointment and implantation certificate.
• Do not pay extra for detox if it is not needed. After several days of sobriety, the standard procedure is sufficient.
• Avoid offers without a medical assessment. A procedure without a medical history and examination is a health risk, not a saving.
