- Labour for replacing one tie rod end or one tie rod usually costs PLN 90 ‑ 130.
- A tie rod end costs around PLN 125 per item, depending on the car model.
- Wheel alignment for one axle after tie rod replacement most often costs PLN 155.

Knocking noises when turning, play in the steering wheel and a car that wanders on the road are typical symptoms of a worn tie rod or tie rod end. The good news is that this is one of the cheaper steering system repairs. The bad news is that labour accounts for only part of the bill, as you also need to pay for parts and mandatory wheel alignment. We break down the full cost based on garage price lists.
How much does tie rod end replacement cost?
Replacing a tie rod end at a garage most often costs PLN 115 in labour per item, according to 3 sources collected by indekscen.pl, with a typical range of PLN 90 ‑ 130. The cheapest garages charge from PLN 50, while the most expensive charge up to PLN 200. On top of the labour cost, you need to pay around PLN 125 for the tie rod end and for wheel alignment.
Details and verbatim quotations from price lists are available at steering tie rod replacement. A tie rod end is usually cheaper to replace than an inner tie rod because the mechanic can unscrew it from the steering knuckle and tie rod without removing the steering rack gaiter.
Full cost of tie rod replacement: an example
The full cost of replacing one tie rod end has three components: labour, the part and wheel alignment. We do not add them together because they come from different price lists, but a typical bill looks like this:

The price of the part depends heavily on the make and model of the car. For popular compact cars such as the Golf IV, Passat B5 or Audi A4 B6, aftermarket parts are cheap and readily available. For newer and more expensive cars, a tie rod end or tie rod costs considerably more, while an original part can be several times more expensive than an aftermarket equivalent.
Is wheel alignment required after tie rod replacement?
Yes, wheel alignment is required after replacing a tie rod or tie rod end because the new part is almost never exactly the same length as the old one. Wheel alignment for one axle most often costs PLN 155, according to 4 price lists, with a typical range of PLN 130 ‑ 195. Details are available at wheel alignment.
Replacing a tie rod end without having the wheels aligned is a false economy. Even slight misalignment can cause the car to pull to one side and lead to rapid, uneven tyre wear along the inner or outer edge. An experienced mechanic can measure the length of the old tie rod end and fit the new one in the same position so that the car can be driven safely to a wheel alignment appointment, but this is no substitute for proper measurement on an alignment rig.
Should tie rods be replaced in pairs?
Tie rods do not have to be replaced in pairs, but mechanics recommend it: the other side operates under the same conditions and usually has a similar level of wear. Labour for a pair costs around PLN 230 (typically PLN 180 ‑ 260), while wheel alignment only needs to be performed once for the entire axle. By replacing both sides at the same time, you pay for wheel alignment only once instead of twice within a few months.
Replacement in pairs is not necessary when the damage is mechanical and limited to one side, for example after hitting a kerb with a wheel, and there is no play on the other side. Ask the mechanic to show you the play while the car is on the lift.
How can you tell if a tie rod is damaged?
A damaged tie rod or tie rod end usually produces clear symptoms that worsen over time:
- Knocking noises when turning and driving over uneven surfaces, most often audible at the front at low speeds.
- Play in the steering wheel. The steering wheel moves several degrees before the wheels begin to turn.
- The car pulls or wanders and requires constant steering corrections.
- Uneven tyre wear, particularly along the edges of the tread.
- A torn rubber gaiter on the tie rod end or tie rod, allowing water and grit to enter.
Play in the steering system should not be ignored because, in extreme cases, the tie rod end can separate from the steering knuckle. It is checked by an inspector during every periodic technical inspection. If the play is in the steering rack itself rather than the tie rods, the cost will be different. We cover it in the article steering rack replacement: cost.
How long does tie rod replacement take?
Replacing one tie rod or tie rod end usually takes one to two hours, excluding wheel alignment. Replacing the tie rod end is often quicker, while replacing the inner tie rod takes longer because the gaiter must be removed and the rod unscrewed from the steering rack. Wheel alignment usually takes another half an hour to an hour.
It takes longer when bolts and threads are seized by corrosion: the mechanic must then use penetrating fluid and sometimes a blowtorch. At an hourly labour rate of PLN 175, every additional hour is reflected in the bill, so it is worth asking for a fixed price for the replacement.
Can you replace a tie rod end yourself?
You can replace a tie rod end in a home garage if you have a lift or sturdy axle stands, spanners and a ball joint separator. You save on labour, usually PLN 90 ‑ 130 per item, but you still cannot perform the wheel alignment yourself, so a garage visit costing PLN 155 remains necessary.
In simplified terms, the replacement process is as follows:
- Loosen the wheel bolts, raise the car and remove the wheel.
- Count the turns or measure the distance between the tie rod end and the locknut so that the new part can be fitted in the same position.
- Remove the ball joint nut and use a separator, not a hammer, to release the ball joint stud from the steering knuckle.
- Loosen the locknut and unscrew the old tie rod end, then screw in the new one by the same number of turns.
- Tighten the nuts to the correct torque and secure the ball joint stud with a new self-locking nut.
- Have the wheels aligned immediately, not several weeks later.
It is better not to replace an inner tie rod yourself without experience: the job requires a special tool and removal of the steering rack gaiter, which is easy to damage.
How can you avoid overpaying for tie rod replacement?
- Ask for an itemised price covering labour, parts and wheel alignment. Some garages list only labour in their price lists, while others list only the part.
- Replace both sides at the same time if there is play on the other side, and have the wheels aligned once.
- Combine repairs. If you are also replacing control arms or bushes, wheel alignment can be performed once after all the work is complete. We cover the cost of other suspension components in the article complete suspension repair: cost.
- Compare an independent garage with an authorised dealership. The hourly labour rate at an authorised dealership is around PLN 465, compared with PLN 175 at an independent garage. Read more in the article mechanic’s hourly labour rate: independent garage or authorised dealership.
- Choose parts from a reputable manufacturer. The cheapest unbranded tie rod end can develop play after just a few months, leaving you to pay for labour and wheel alignment again.
