Prices vary widely because the cost depends on the quantity and type of oil, and an automatic gearbox requires several times more oil than a manual one. More expensive services, especially for premium cars, can cost around PLN 1,960.

The cost consists of three items: labour, gearbox oil (ATF or dual-clutch transmission oil) and a filter, if the gearbox has one. Some garages list only the net labour charge in their price lists and charge separately for the oil, so always ask for the final price including oil when comparing quotes.

Dynamic or static oil change: how do they differ and how much do they cost?

A static oil change involves draining the oil through the plug and adding fresh oil, while a dynamic change flushes the gearbox using special equipment connected to the oil cooling system. A static change is cheaper, but in an automatic gearbox it replaces only some of the oil, usually around one-third to one-half, because the rest remains in the torque converter and oil cooler.

A dynamic automatic gearbox oil change costs more, around PLN 1,250, because it uses about twice as much oil as the gearbox holds: the fresh oil pushes out the old oil until clean oil emerges. In return, nearly all the oil is replaced.

A manual gearbox usually holds between 1.5 and 3 litres of oil, so the difference between a quote with and without oil is smaller than for an automatic gearbox.

How often should the oil be changed in automatic and manual gearboxes?

Automatic gearbox oil is usually changed every 40,000 to 60,000 km, and manual gearbox oil every 60,000 to 100,000 km, even though some manufacturers describe it as “lifetime oil”. These are general intervals recommended by mechanics. The interval in the car’s service book takes precedence, and the oil should be changed more often under demanding operating conditions, such as urban driving, towing a trailer or taxi use.

A manufacturer’s claim of “lifetime gearbox oil” usually refers to the warranty period or an assumed mileage, not the gearbox’s actual lifespan.

Changing the gearbox oil after buying a used car is a sensible expense if the seller does not have a receipt from a garage. For a manual gearbox, it usually costs PLN 160 ‑ 215, so it is not worth the risk of driving with oil of unknown mileage. How can you tell when gearbox oil needs changing?

Gearbox oil needs changing when the recommended mileage has been exceeded or the gearbox begins to operate differently than usual. Look out for:

1. Jerking and delayed gear changes in an automatic gearbox, especially when the engine is cold.
2. Difficulty engaging gears in a manual gearbox and grinding when changing down.
3. Whining or humming from the gearbox that becomes louder as speed increases.
4. Dark oil with a burnt smell when checked with the dipstick (in gearboxes that have one).
5. Signs of a leak under the car or a gearbox overheating warning.

• Ask for the price including oil. A price list showing labour only may look attractive, but oil for an automatic gearbox can cost more than the labour.
• Ask how many litres of oil the dynamic change will use and which oil will be added. It must meet the gearbox manufacturer’s specification.
• Check whether the price includes the filter and oil sump gasket, if the gearbox has them.
