You do not need to buy equipment for your first trip to the mountains, a winter holiday with children or just a few days on the slopes each season. Hire shops can be found by every major ski slope and in towns, and their price lists differ mainly in what is included: skis alone or a full set with boots and poles, and a full day or just a few hours. We collected prices from hire shop price lists and calculated the cost of a day, a weekend and a week.

How much does it cost to hire skis for a day?

Hiring skis for a day most commonly costs 40 PLN/day, according to 5 hire shop price lists collected by indekscen.pl. Half of the prices fall within the 35 ‑ 45 PLN/day range. The cheapest hire shops charge 30 PLN/day per day, while the highest price in the price lists, 70 PLN/day, is for a full set: skis, boots and poles. Quotes from the price lists are available at ski hire.

Many hire shops also offer hourly rates, for example for 2 or 4 hours. These are good value if you are heading to the slopes in the afternoon or just want to see whether skiing suits you. A daily rate is better value if you are spending the whole day on the slopes.

Are skis hired together with boots?

Skis can be hired with boots or separately, depending on the hire shop. Some hire shops quote a single price for a full set (skis, boots and poles, or a snowboard with boots), while others charge separately for skis and boots. A full set costs up to around 70 PLN/day per day in the price lists, while skis alone usually cost 35 ‑ 45 PLN/day.

Helmets and goggles usually cost extra. A helmet is essential for children, and many hire shops offer them cheaply or include one with a children’s set. Ask about this when booking, as small surcharges add up when hiring for several people.

How much does ski hire cost for a winter holiday week?

Hiring skis for a winter holiday week, or 6 days of skiing, costs around PLN 240 at the median daily rate, typically PLN 210 ‑ 270. In practice, it is often cheaper because hire shops offer a lower daily rate for longer hire periods. The table below shows the approximate cost for trips of different lengths, calculated using the daily rate:

Hire period Skis only, at the median price Typical range
1 day 40 PLN/day 35 ‑ 45 PLN/day
Weekend (2 days) around PLN 80 PLN 70 ‑ 90
Long weekend (4 days) around PLN 160 PLN 140 ‑ 180
Winter holiday week (6 days) around PLN 240 PLN 210 ‑ 270

For a family with two children, the cost is multiplied by four sets, although children’s equipment may be cheaper. For a week-long trip, always ask for a package price covering the entire stay, not just the daily rate.

How much do ski lessons cost with hired equipment?

An hour-long lesson with a ski instructor most commonly costs 140 PLN/h for one person, typically 105 ‑ 150 PLN/h. A group lesson costs around 70 PLN/h per person, while a full-day family training package costs around 360 PLN/day. Details are available at ski instructor.

A sensible plan for a beginner is to hire skis for the entire stay and book two or three hours with an instructor at the start. A few lessons can help you avoid bad habits and falls, while hire equipment is selected to match your ability.

What affects the price of ski hire?

The cost of ski hire depends on the hire period, the equipment included and the location. The hire shop price lists show four main factors:

  1. Hire period. The longer the hire period, the lower the daily rate. Rates for 2 and 4 hours are lower than the daily rate, but work out more expensive per hour.
  2. Equipment included. Skis alone cost less than a full set with boots and poles.
  3. Equipment class. Hire shops divide skis into standard, top and premium categories. New models and performance skis cost more.
  4. Location. At the height of the season, a hire shop by the lower ski lift station may be more expensive than one in a town a few kilometres away.

We do not yet have median local prices for individual resorts, so our comparison of locations is based on individual price lists quoted on the service page.

How much does cross-country ski hire cost?

Cross-country skis are usually hired on similar terms to downhill skis: for a few hours or a full day, often as a set with boots and poles. We do not yet have a separate median for cross-country skis, so use the range of 35 ‑ 45 PLN/day per day for downhill skis as a guide. Cross-country equipment is lighter and simpler, so it is no more expensive at many hire shops.

Cross-country ski hire shops operate by mountain trails and in some towns and cities, for example near parks and recreation areas when snow falls. Hiring equipment for an hour or two is popular on urban trails because the loops are short. Before setting off, check whether the hire shop stocks classic or skate skis, as they require different equipment and boots.

Is it better to hire or buy skis?

Hiring skis is good value if you ski for only a few days a year or are still learning. At a rate of 40 PLN/day per day, even several weeks of skiing costs less than a new set with boots, and you do not have to pay for servicing or storage. A basic ski service (edge sharpening and waxing) costs around PLN 110 per pair each season.

Buying is worthwhile if you ski regularly, have an established skiing style and want your own boots fitted to your feet. Many people choose a compromise: they own their boots and hire their skis. Well-fitting boots make more difference to comfort than the skis themselves, while hired skis can be changed each year for a model that suits your improving ability.

Is it worth buying skis from a hire shop?

Skis from a hire shop are worth buying if you want an affordable way to get your own equipment and check its condition carefully. Hire shops sell off equipment after one or two seasons, usually after servicing it. Before buying, inspect the bases (for deep scratches and gouges), edges (for chips) and bindings (to make sure they can be adjusted to your boots). Also ask a ski service to adjust the bindings.

How can you avoid overpaying for ski hire?

  • Book online before your trip. Some hire shops offer a booking discount and guarantee that your sizes will be available during the peak winter holiday period.
  • Compare hire shops by the slopes and in town. The latter may be cheaper even though the equipment is the same.
  • Ask for a package covering your entire stay, not just the daily rate.
  • Check what is included: boots, poles, a helmet and equipment insurance.
  • Return the equipment on time. Returning it after the deadline may result in a charge for another day.

If you are travelling to the mountains with a larger group, it is also worth calculating your transport costs: our article on 9‑seater minibus hire can help. For winter trips with accommodation on wheels, see campervan hire.
