An injection is one of the least expensive nursing procedures, but the price can vary severalfold. The same intramuscular injection costs one amount at a clinic, another at a private treatment room, and yet another when a nurse comes to your home in the evening. We collected prices from public facility price lists and compared them with other services available at home.
How much does an injection at home cost?
An injection administered privately at the patient’s home most often costs PLN 63, while half of the prices fall within PLN 50 ‑ 75, according to 5 price lists and articles collected by indekscen.pl. The price covers only the administration of the medication by a nurse. The medication itself is charged separately, as is travel beyond the provider’s distance limit, while some companies also charge extra for weekends, public holidays or night-time appointments.
Full data with sources is available at administering an injection. The full range is wide: from PLN 30 at a clinic to PLN 150 for a private service with a nurse travelling to the patient.
How much does a nurse charge privately for an injection?
A nurse usually charges PLN 50 ‑ 75 privately for an injection, depending on the type of injection and where it is administered. Three price levels recur in the price lists we collected:
| Where the injection is administered | Typical price | What affects the price |
|---|---|---|
| Clinic or treatment room | from PLN 30 | no travel, fixed price from the price list |
| Private nurse, typically | PLN 50 ‑ 75 | type of injection, city, travel within the limit |
| Service with travel, highest rates | up to PLN 150 | rapid attendance, evening, weekend |
| Doctor’s home visit (for comparison) | PLN 315 ‑ 450 | examination, recommendations, prescription |
For comparison, doctor's home visit usually costs PLN 315 ‑ 450. If the medication has already been prescribed and only needs to be administered, a nurse is sufficient.
How much does an intramuscular injection cost?
A privately administered intramuscular injection usually costs the same as other injections, namely PLN 50 ‑ 75; at some treatment rooms, the price of an intramuscular injection is closer to the upper end of the range. However, the type of injection affects the price:
- A subcutaneous or intradermal injection is usually the least expensive and quickest.
- An intramuscular injection is the most common item in price lists and is usually priced around the middle of the range.
- An intravenous injection may cost more because it requires inserting a needle into a vein and longer observation.
- A drip is a separate service: vitamin IV drip at a facility usually costs PLN 185 ‑ 250, while an infusion administered at home costs around PLN 1,100.
Can a nurse administer an injection at home?
Yes, a nurse can administer an injection at the patient’s home, either privately or as part of community nursing care, based on a doctor’s order. For a private appointment, you only need to book a visit and have the medication and an order specifying its name, dose and route of administration ready. Under the NFZ, injections ordered by a doctor are usually administered in a clinic’s treatment room, while a community nurse primarily visits people who cannot travel to the clinic themselves. Your clinic will decide whether you qualify for an NFZ-funded home visit, so ask there before booking a paid service.
How much does an hour of nursing care at home cost?
Our index does not list an hourly nursing rate as a separate service because nursing procedures are usually priced per procedure rather than by time: an injection costs PLN 50 ‑ 75. By contrast, carers for older people are paid by the hour, which is sometimes confused with nursing care. carer for an elderly person usually costs 46 ‑ 55 PLN/h, while a single personal care visit costs around PLN 100. However, a carer does not administer injections, as this is a nurse’s responsibility.

Can you give yourself an injection?
You should only give yourself injections that the doctor has prescribed for self-administration, such as certain subcutaneous medications supplied in pre-filled syringes or injector pens. A doctor or nurse will first show you how to administer the medication, after which you can do it at home at no additional cost. You should not give yourself intramuscular or intravenous injections or ask an unqualified person to do so, as it is easy to use the wrong injection site or cause an infection. If in doubt, ask the doctor who issued the prescription.
How should you prepare for a nurse’s visit to administer an injection?
A nurse’s home visit to administer an injection usually takes several minutes. Good preparation makes the visit shorter and helps avoid paying for a second call-out. Before the nurse arrives, prepare:
- The doctor’s order specifying the medication name, dose, route of administration and number of injections.
- The medication from the pharmacy in its original packaging, stored according to the patient information leaflet (some medications must be kept in the fridge).
- Syringes and needles, if the provider does not supply them. Ask when booking, as price lists differ on this point.
- Information about allergies and how the patient responded to previous doses.
- A comfortable, well-lit place where the patient can lie down.
When booking, ask about the price of the entire course, travel charges and weekend surcharges. Some nurses can also perform other procedures during the same visit, such as changing a dressing or measuring blood pressure, and charge for them separately, so it may be worth combining them in one appointment.
What affects the price of an injection?
The price of an injection depends mainly on where it is administered and the type of facility, and less on the medication itself. According to the price lists, the main factors are:
- Location: the patient’s home or a treatment room. A home visit includes travel, which may be charged per kilometre beyond a set limit.
- Facility: a clinic, private nursing practice or medical chain. Prices at clinics can be considerably lower.
- Type of injection: subcutaneous, intramuscular or intravenous.
- Time: evenings, weekends and public holidays may cost more.
- Number of injections: a package covering the whole course may cost less per injection.
How can you pay less for a course of injections?
At the median price, a course of injections costs around PLN 320 for five visits and around PLN 630 for ten, so it is worth comparing offers for longer treatments.
- Ask about a package. Some treatment rooms offer a lower price for a course paid for in advance.
- Check your primary care clinic. If the order was issued by a GP, the injection may be administered free of charge in the treatment room.
- Visit the treatment room if you can. An injection in a treatment room usually costs less than at home because there is no travel charge.
- Book a regular time on weekdays to avoid weekend and night-time surcharges.
- Ask about the distance limit and whether the travel charge is fixed.
