Individual hormone tests are cheaper: the median is PLN 44 for LH and PLN 41 for TSH, while AMH, which indicates ovarian reserve, costs around PLN 200. Tests ordered by a doctor are free under the NFZ.

A female hormone test may sound like a single test, but in practice it consists of several different measurements taken from one blood sample. Laboratories sell them as ready-made packages or individual tests, and prices for the same package may vary by collection point. We have compiled laboratory chain price lists to show how much packages and individual hormone tests cost, and when they should be performed during the menstrual cycle.

How much do female hormone tests cost at a laboratory?

A basic hormone test package for women most often costs PLN 225, according to 4 laboratory price lists collected by indekscen.pl. Half of the offers fall within the PLN 220 ‑ 260 range, the cheapest package costs PLN 174, and the most expensive costs PLN 355.

Why prices vary:

1. Tests included in the package. A basic package includes several sex hormones, while an extended package adds thyroid hormones, androgens or AMH.
2. Collection point. The same laboratory chain may charge different prices in different cities and locations, with differences reaching tens of PLN.
3. Blood collection fee. Some laboratories charge it separately, while others include it in the package price.
4. Online purchase. A package bought from a laboratory’s online shop may be cheaper than one purchased at the reception desk.

A hormone package or individual tests: which offers better value?

A hormone package usually offers better value if you need most of the hormones it includes. Laboratories price packages below the combined cost of buying the same tests separately. If your doctor has ordered two or three specific hormone tests, buying them individually will be cheaper.

Which hormones should women have tested?

The hormones worth testing depend on the reason for the tests, and the set should be selected by a doctor. Four situations are most common:

• Irregular periods or suspected PCOS: LH, FSH, prolactin, TSH, androgens (testosterone, DHEA‑S, androstenedione), insulin and glucose.
• Trying to conceive: FSH, LH, oestradiol, prolactin, TSH, progesterone during the second phase of the menstrual cycle, and often AMH.
• Around menopause: FSH and oestradiol, sometimes TSH because thyroid symptoms can be similar.
• Pregnancy: beta‑hCG and TSH, with further tests as recommended by the doctor managing the pregnancy.

Having hormones tested ‘just in case’, without any symptoms, rarely provides useful information, while uninterpreted results can cause unnecessary concern.

When during the menstrual cycle should hormone levels be tested?

Most sex hormones are tested on a specific day of the menstrual cycle because their levels change from day to day. The usual timings are:

1. FSH, LH and oestradiol: usually between days 2 and 5 of the menstrual cycle, counted from the first day of the period.
2. Progesterone: around 7 days after ovulation, usually around day 21 of a 28‑day cycle.
3. Prolactin: in the morning, after a full night’s sleep and a short rest before the blood sample is taken.
4. AMH and TSH: on any day of the menstrual cycle, preferably in the morning.

Your doctor will specify the exact day, especially if your cycles are irregular or you use hormonal contraception, which affects the results. Testing on the wrong day of the cycle often means having to repeat the test and pay again.

Female hormone tests during menopause

During perimenopause, doctors usually order FSH and oestradiol tests, as well as TSH when symptoms such as fatigue or weight fluctuations are present. A single hormone test result during this period can be misleading because levels fluctuate considerably, so the doctor assesses the results together with the symptoms.

How much does it cost to have hormone test results interpreted?

Laboratories do not usually include interpretation of hormone test results in the price. A private appointment with an endocrinologist typically costs PLN 255 ‑ 315, with a median of PLN 275. You will usually pay PLN 300 for private gynaecologist appointment, and prices vary between cities.

In Kraków, the median cost of a gynaecologist appointment is PLN 275, compared with PLN 350 in Wrocław. You do not need a referral to see a gynaecologist under the NFZ, but you do need one to see an endocrinologist. An NFZ doctor may order hormone tests free of charge if they are medically justified.

Can hormone tests be performed free of charge under the NFZ?

Hormone tests under the NFZ are free if ordered for medical reasons by a GP, gynaecologist or endocrinologist at a clinic. A GP can order some tests, such as TSH, but a broader sex hormone panel is usually ordered by a gynaecologist or endocrinologist. Waiting times for an endocrinologist under the NFZ can be long, so some women have the tests performed privately and take the results to their appointment.

Private tests without a referral have two advantages: immediate availability and the option to choose the day of the menstrual cycle specified by the doctor. The disadvantage is that a package you select yourself may not contain the hormones your doctor needs, meaning you will have to arrange additional tests later. Before buying a package, check its contents on the laboratory’s website and compare them with the list provided by your doctor.

How much does female fertility testing cost?

Female fertility testing consists of a set of hormone tests and an ultrasound scan, rather than one test with a single price. The basic assessment includes hormones from a package and aMH test, which typically costs PLN 200 ‑ 220. For comparison, a partner’s semen analysis costs around PLN 270 at fertility clinics. How can you avoid overpaying for hormone tests?

• Ask your doctor which hormones need to be tested, then compare the package price with the combined price of individual tests at the same laboratory.
• Check the price at the specific collection point, not just the laboratory chain. Prices for the same test vary between cities.
• Buy online if the laboratory offers a discount, and ask whether blood collection is included in the price.
• Have the test performed on the correct day of your menstrual cycle. Having to repeat it because of incorrect timing is the most common unnecessary expense.
