A carport is the cheapest way to shelter a car from snow, hail and sun without building a garage. However, quoted prices range from several hundred PLN to well over PLN 10,000 because some offers are for a pack of timber to assemble yourself, while others cover a turnkey carport with a dual-pitch roof. We break down the price of a wooden carport into materials, labour, roofing and the base, using price lists from manufacturers and construction companies.

How much does it cost to build a wooden carport?

Building a single-car wooden carport most often costs PLN 8,500, while half of the offers fall within the PLN 6,450 ‑ 11,100 range, according to 4 price lists collected by indekscen.pl. The cheapest ready-made structures for self-assembly start at PLN 999, while the most expensive models, with a dual-pitch roof and storage room, cost up to PLN 14,500.

How much does labour cost when building a wooden carport?

Labour for building a wooden carport costs around 125 PLN/h if the company charges by the hour. Contractors more often quote a fixed price for the entire carport because the number of hours depends on its size, roof type and site preparation. A simple single-car carport with a mono-pitch roof usually takes two carpenters several days, while a dual-pitch roof, soffit and storage room extend the assembly time.

For comparison, labour alone for construction of a garden gazebo from a ready-made kit costs around PLN 2,000. A carport has a simpler structure than a gazebo, with no walls or railings, so its assembly does not usually cost more.

What is the cost breakdown for building a wooden carport?

The cost breakdown for a single-car wooden carport (around 3x5 m) includes several items that are worth pricing separately:

  1. Timber structure (posts, beams and rafters): materials for a simple carport cost around PLN 4,500.
  2. Roof covering: polycarbonate sheets, trapezoidal metal sheets, shingles or roofing felt. The median labour cost for laying roofing felt is 40 PLN/m², so labour alone for a roof of around 18 m² costs approximately PLN 720.
  3. Pad foundations beneath the posts or drive-in anchors: concrete footings require several bags of concrete and a day’s work.
  4. Surface beneath the car: laying paving blocks over 15 m² costs around PLN 3,900, including materials (typically PLN 3,800 ‑ 4,100). Aggregate is cheaper.
  5. Assembly: an hourly rate of around 125 PLN/h or a fixed contractor’s fee.
  6. Treatment and painting: the timber must be protected immediately after assembly and recoated every few years.

The base can be a surprisingly large expense: paving beneath a carport may cost half as much as the carport itself. A detailed paving estimate is available in the article example cost breakdown for laying block paving.

Which is cheaper: a wooden or metal carport?

A wooden carport is usually cheaper to buy than a steel or aluminium one of a similar size, but it requires regular treatment. We do not have a separate median for steel carports, so we use a gazebo for comparison: Metal or aluminium gazebo (approx. 3x4 m) costs around PLN 8,500, which is similar to the median price of a wooden carport, PLN 8,500, although it is smaller.

Galvanised steel and aluminium do not rot and do not need painting every few years, so the price difference is partly offset by lower maintenance costs. Timber is easier to match to the house and can be extended with a storage room or log store.

Attached or freestanding carport: which is cheaper?

An attached carport is usually cheaper than a freestanding one of the same size because one side of the roof rests on a beam fixed to the wall of the house or garage, eliminating some posts and foundations. However, it needs to be securely fixed to the wall, and the junction between the roof and façade must be carefully sealed to prevent water from running down the wall. Houses insulated with polystyrene require special anchors that pass through the insulation.

A freestanding carport offers more flexibility when choosing its location and is easier to alter or dismantle later. For an attached carport, ask the relevant authority about the formalities because regulations may treat it differently from a freestanding structure.

Carport, gazebo or covered terrace: how much do they cost?

Carports, gazebos and covered terraces are similar timber structures, but their finish and price differ. Here is a comparison of median prices:

ServiceMedianTypicallySources

Construction of a garden gazeboPLN 8,250PLN 5,950 ‑ 10,6004

Median and typical range from public price lists, as at 5 October 2026. Each price includes a source and quotation on the service page.

construction of a garden gazebo has a median price of PLN 8,250 for a gazebo of around 15 to 20 m² with a basic roof, while terrace construction is priced per square metre, with a median of 575 PLN/m², excluding a roof. A carport has the simplest structure because it does not need a floor, railings or walls. If you are considering a terrace beside your house, you can compare materials in the article which terrace is the cheapest.

Does a carport of up to 50 m² need to be notified?

A carport beside a detached house does not usually require planning permission, but depending on its area, the number of such structures on the plot and its location, it may need to be notified to the county authority. The relevant provisions of construction law have changed in recent years, and some plots are also subject to local planning rules and minimum distances from the boundary.

We do not provide an interpretation of the regulations here. Before ordering a carport, ask the architecture department of the county or municipal authority whether your carport requires notification, and keep their response. We describe the formalities for larger projects in the article planning permission: costs.

How do you build a wooden carport step by step?

Building a wooden carport usually involves the following steps:

  1. Choosing the location and checking the formalities (notification, distance from the plot boundary).
  2. Setting out the structure and installing pad foundations beneath the posts, usually concrete footings with anchors.
  3. Installing the posts and beams made from structural timber, preferably kiln-dried and pressure-treated.
  4. Roof structure: rafters for a mono-pitch or dual-pitch roof.
  5. Roof covering and flashings, plus a gutter that carries water away from the base.
  6. Surface beneath the car: block paving, openwork slabs or aggregate.
  7. Treating or painting the timber.

Two people with basic tools can realistically assemble a ready-made kit themselves, but mistakes in the foundations and roof are the most expensive to correct.

How can you avoid overpaying for a carport?

  • Compare quotes with the same scope: check whether the price includes the roof covering, assembly, foundations and timber treatment.
  • Ask about the post dimensions and timber grade. Thin posts reduce the quoted price but may not support the weight of snow.
  • Buy a ready-made kit and pay only for assembly if you do not want to do everything yourself.
  • Plan the base from the outset. Laying paving after the carport has been erected is more difficult and expensive.
  • Build outside the peak season. Companies have shorter lead times in winter and early spring.
