Dry ice cleaning has become popular among owners of classic cars, imported cars and anyone who wants to see the underbody in factory-fresh condition before applying protective treatment. The service is not cheap, and price lists rarely quote a price per car. We explain how companies calculate the cost, how much underbody and engine cleaning costs, and when sandblasting is the better choice.

How much does dry ice underbody cleaning cost?

Dry ice underbody cleaning usually costs from PLN 1,500 to PLN 3,000 for a passenger car, as the work most often takes two to four hours and companies charge by the hour. The median hourly rate based on 4 sources collected by indekscen.pl is 750 PLN/h. A small car with a relatively clean underbody will be closer to the lower figure, while an SUV or an old car with a thick layer of underseal and mud will be closer to the higher one.

This is the cost at the median rate and within the typical range of rates:

Working time Cost at the median Typical range Example scope
1 hour PLN 750 PLN 680 ‑ 800 engine bay, wheel arches
2 hours PLN 1,500 PLN 1,400 ‑ 1,600 underbody of a small car
3 hours PLN 2,300 PLN 2,000 ‑ 2,400 underbody and wheel arches, medium-sized car
4 hours PLN 3,000 PLN 2,700 ‑ 3,200 SUV, classic car, underbody and engine

The working time is our example, not a price taken from a price list. The company provides an exact quote after inspecting the car, as the amount of dirt and old coatings can only be assessed once it is on a lift.

How much does dry ice cleaning cost per hour?

Company price lists quote dry ice cleaning at between 600 PLN/h and 800 PLN/h per hour, with half of the rates falling within the 675 ‑ 800 PLN/h range. The high rate reflects the costs involved: the cleaning machine, a high-capacity compressor and dry ice pellets, of which 30 to 80 kg are used per hour. Dry ice must be purchased shortly before the job because it disappears over time.

Most companies treat the hourly rate as a starting point and set the price individually. You can find all rates, sources and quotations on the dry ice cleaning page.

What does dry ice underbody cleaning involve, step by step?

Dry ice underbody cleaning consists of several stages, all covered by the hourly rate, so it is worth knowing what happens while the car is on the lift:

  1. Inspection and quote. The technician assesses the thickness of the dirt and old coatings, then estimates the working time and pellet consumption.
  2. Removing covers. The plastic underbody covers and wheel arch liners are removed to reach the structural sections and sills.
  3. Initial removal of thick layers. Dried mud and loose underseal are removed first because they slow down the cleaning process.
  4. Main cleaning. A pressurised stream of pellets removes dirt, grease and flaking coatings, exposing clean metal or the original factory protection.
  5. Inspection and documentation. Photographs are taken of any corroded areas that require repair before protective treatment.

The car is dry after cleaning, so protective treatment can be applied immediately, without waiting for it to dry as after washing with water.

How much does dry ice engine cleaning cost?

Dry ice engine cleaning is usually a shorter job than cleaning the underbody, so it most often costs the equivalent of one to two hours’ work, or from PLN 750 to PLN 1,500 at the median rate. The collected price lists do not include a separate price for the engine, so we calculate it based on the working time.

An engine is well suited to dry ice cleaning: the method does not use water, so it does not flood the electronics, connectors or sensors. The pellets evaporate, leaving only the dislodged dirt to be collected from the workshop floor.

Is dry ice cleaning charged per m²?

Dry ice cleaning is almost never charged per m², even though some customers ask about this. An hourly rate, typically 675 ‑ 800 PLN/h, reflects the cost more accurately because the same square metre may be lightly dusty or covered with a thick layer of old tar. Sandblasting, by contrast, is charged per m², so quotes must be converted into a total job cost before they can be compared.

The price depends on:

  1. Scope of work. The underbody alone, the underbody with wheel arches, the engine or the entire car.
  2. Degree and type of dirt. Loose dirt comes off quickly, while old underseal and tar take longer.
  3. Pellet consumption. From 30 to 80 kg per hour, with more required for difficult coatings.
  4. Vehicle size. An SUV or van has a larger surface area than a city hatchback.
  5. Travel. Mobile teams add the cost of transporting the equipment.

Does dry ice remove rust?

Dry ice removes loose rust, dirt, old wax, grease and flaking underseal, but it does not remove rust that has eaten into the metal. The method is non-abrasive because the pellets evaporate on impact, so it does not damage paint or factory-applied protection that remains in good condition. This is an advantage for a car in good condition and a disadvantage for one with severe corrosion.

For deep corrosion, abrasive blasting (blast cleaning) is more suitable. It is usually charged per m², with a median of 43 PLN/m². Sandblasting strips the surface back to bare metal, but leaves abrasive material in crevices and also removes sound coatings. We compare both steps before protective treatment in the article underbody sandblasting and protection: price.

Is dry ice cleaning worth the cost?

Dry ice cleaning is worthwhile mainly when it is followed by underbody protection or when the car is particularly valuable. A clean underbody makes every area of corrosion visible and ensures that the new treatment adheres to the metal rather than to dirt. Underbody protection for a small car usually costs PLN 700 ‑ 850, while higher-standard detailing studios charge around PLN 3,500.

For an ordinary everyday car with an underbody in good condition, paying for several hours of cleaning is often not worthwhile. Pressure washing followed by car underbody protection once the car is dry is sufficient. Dry ice has an advantage where water could cause damage: on classic cars with sensitive crevices, and around the engine and electrical system.

How can you avoid overpaying for dry ice cleaning?

  • Ask for an estimated working time. At a rate of 750 PLN/h, a difference of one hour makes a noticeable difference to the bill.
  • Ask whether the pellets are included in the rate. They are included in most price lists, but some companies charge for them separately.
  • Combine services. Having the cleaning and protective treatment done in the same workshop saves the cost of transport and using a second lift.
  • Ask for before-and-after photographs. A good detailing studio documents the condition of the underbody, which is also useful when selling the car.
  • Do not pay for dry ice cleaning where pressure washing is sufficient. For light dirt, dry ice is excessive.

Frequently asked questions

How long does dry ice underbody cleaning take?

Is dry ice vapour harmful?

Biała mgła z suchego lodu to skroplona para wodna i dwutlenek węgla.

How many days does dry ice last?

Can dry ice be used to clean machinery and façades?

Do we have dry ice cleaning prices for Kraków, Warsaw or Silesia?
