Underbody rust is not visible on a daily basis, but it can end a car’s life sooner than a worn-out engine. Underbody protection is an expense incurred once every few years, but quoted prices vary severalfold, from a quick wax spray to abrasive blasting with the suspension removed. We compare these options using public garage price lists and explain what you are paying for.

How much does underbody protection cost?

Underbody protection for a small passenger car most often costs PLN 750, according to 3 price lists collected by indekscen.pl, while half of the listed prices fall within PLN 700 ‑ 850. For a standard garage service, listed prices start at PLN 500 and reach PLN 1,000.

The basic car underbody protection price covers applying an anti-corrosion coating to the underbody, usually after washing it. It does not include removing advanced rust or dismantling the fuel tank or suspension components. These extras account for most of the difference between quotes.

Underbody blasting and protection: prices and when it is worthwhile

Abrasive blasting before underbody protection increases the cost severalfold because blasting is charged per square metre, typically 41 ‑ 56 PLN/m². For a car underbody, you must also account for removing components, masking the rest of the car and applying primer to bare metal. By comparison, price lists put abrasive blasting of an entire car body at around PLN 2,500.

Abrasive blasting makes sense in two situations: for a car with severe corrosion that you want to stop for years, and when restoring a classic car. For a typical car that is a few years old, thorough washing, removing loose rust with wire brushes and spraying on a protective product are sufficient. Abrasive blasting (details: abrasive blasting (blast cleaning)) removes rust down to clean metal, but the metal must then be primed immediately because bare steel can corrode within days.

Comparison: from spray treatment to professional protection

Underbody protection has three levels: a basic spray treatment at a garage, professional protection at a detailing studio and complete restoration with abrasive blasting. According to price lists, the differences are as follows:

Option Price according to price lists What it includes
Basic protection, small car PLN 700 ‑ 850 washing, anti-corrosion coating
Professional protection around PLN 3,500 thorough cleaning, several coats, cavities
Abrasive blasting of metal 41 ‑ 56 PLN/m² removal of rust and old coatings
Bodywork repair of a section PLN 395 ‑ 750 when rust has eaten through the metal

Professional protection, costing around PLN 3,500, usually involves more extensive cleaning, often with the wheel arches and covers removed, removing rust to leave a stable surface, applying several products to different areas and protecting enclosed cavities. It is worth considering for more expensive cars that you intend to keep for many years.

Underbody cleaning and protection: what does the service involve step by step?

Underbody cleaning and protection at a good garage consists of several stages, while the price of PLN 750 usually applies to a version in which some of them are shortened. The complete service is as follows:

  1. Inspection on a lift. The mechanic assesses the condition of the body panels, brake and fuel lines, and rusted areas. They should provide the final price after this stage.
  2. Underbody washing. A pressure washer with hot water and degreaser removes mud, salt and old, flaking coatings.
  3. Drying. The car is left to dry for several hours or until the next day. A coating does not adhere well to damp metal.
  4. Rust removal. Wire brushes, grinders or abrasive blasting are used on the worst areas, followed by a rust neutraliser and primer.
  5. Masking the brake discs, exhaust system and rubber components that must not come into contact with the coating.
  6. Spraying protective products onto the underbody and wheel arches, and injecting wax into enclosed cavities through access holes.

A garage that completes the entire job in two hours will usually skip the drying and rust-removal stages. Ask for photographs of the underbody before and after the service.

What is the best method of underbody protection?

The best method of underbody protection depends on the condition of the car. Wax-based products work well on a clean underbody, while corrosion must first be removed and primer applied before adding a protective coating. No method will work if the product is sprayed onto dirt and loose rust.

The most commonly used products are:

  1. Waxes and penetrating products. They penetrate gaps and enclosed cavities and do not crack. They need to be reapplied every year or two.
  2. Bitumen-based and rubber-based coatings. They form a thick, hard layer resistant to stone chips. If incorrectly applied over rust, they can conceal it and trap moisture underneath.
  3. Multi-layer systems. Primer on cleaned metal, a protective underbody coating and wax in enclosed cavities. This is standard practice for professional protection.

Ask the garage which specific products it will apply and where, rather than simply asking “whether protection is included”.

How long does underbody protection last?

Properly applied underbody protection usually lasts between 2 and 5 years, depending on the product, driving conditions and whether the car is kept in a garage. Waxes need to be reapplied more often, while protective coatings last longer but eventually crack due to stone chips.

An annual underbody inspection and touching up areas where the coating has chipped off will extend its life the most. It is worth washing road salt off the underbody after winter. Standard manual car wash costs around PLN 83, but not every car wash cleans underneath, so ask in advance.

Is underbody protection worthwhile?

Underbody protection is worthwhile if you intend to keep driving the car for several more years, because PLN 750 is less than the cost of repairing a single rusted-through sill or wheel arch. Bodywork repair with painting typically costs PLN 395 ‑ 750 per section, while rotten structural components can result in a failed roadworthiness test.

Protection makes less sense for a car that you plan to sell within a year, or one with corrosion so advanced that welding is already required. In that case, the bodywork repair must come first, followed by protection. Underbody protection in Kraków and other cities: how to compare price lists

We do not yet have underbody protection prices for individual cities such as Kraków, Gdańsk or Wrocław, so compare local quotes with the national median of PLN 750. When comparing price lists, check:

  • Vehicle size. The basic price usually applies to a small passenger car, while SUVs and vans cost more.
  • Scope of cleaning. Pressure washing, wire brushing and abrasive blasting have three different prices.
  • Enclosed cavities. Check whether the price includes applying wax inside the sills and chassis rails.
  • Additional charges. Removing advanced rust and dismantling components are usually quoted separately after the car has been inspected.
  • Warranty and inspection after one year. Good garages offer a free inspection and touch-ups.
