Sandblasting and powder coating steel together cost several dozen PLN per square metre: powder coating alone has a median price of 50 PLN/m² (typically 43 ‑ 56 PLN/m²), while sandblasting before coating costs 43 PLN/m² (typically 41 ‑ 56 PLN/m²). Coating shops charge per wheel, with powder coating costing about PLN 125.

Powder coating is the most common way to protect gates, balustrades, fences, metal furniture and wheels. The price per square metre may look low, but sandblasting is usually added to the bill, while for small items coating shops charge a minimum fee or a per-item rate. Below, we compare powder-coating and sandblasting prices, explain how coating shops calculate surface area and provide examples for a gate, a balustrade and a set of wheels. The figures are medians from public price lists published by powder-coating shops and from guides collected in the price index.

How much does powder coating cost per m² in 2026?

Powder coating untreated steel most commonly costs 50 PLN/m², with half of the price lists falling within the 43 ‑ 56 PLN/m² range. According to 4 sources collected by indekscen.pl, the cheapest coating shops charge from 30 PLN/m², while the most expensive charge up to 63.20 PLN/m². The per-square-metre rate usually includes surface preparation (degreasing), powder application and curing in an oven. It does not include sandblasting if the item is rusty or covered with old paint, or transport to the coating shop. Some price lists give net amounts, so when comparing quotes, make sure that both include VAT.

How is powder coating calculated?

Powder coating is most commonly priced per square metre of the item’s surface, and per item for wheels and small components. The coating shop measures the surface actually covered by the powder, including both sides of sheet metal and the sides of profiles, rather than the outline of the gate as seen from the street.

The final price depends on:

1. Material: untreated steel, galvanised steel and aluminium require different preparation; galvanised steel and aluminium often also require a primer.
2. Shape and size: small, openwork items such as balustrades and grilles cost more per square metre than flat sheets because suspending and coating them takes longer.
3. Surface condition: rust and old paint require sandblasting, charged separately.
4. Colour: standard RAL colours are cheaper than textured, metallic and custom colours.
5. Order size: coating shops apply a minimum fee to small orders and offer discounts for large batches.

How much does sandblasting before powder coating cost?

Sandblasting metal surfaces most commonly costs 43 PLN/m², typically 41 ‑ 56 PLN/m², and is charged separately from coating. abrasive blasting (blast cleaning) removes rust, old paint and mill scale so that the powder adheres properly; without it, even the best coating will begin to flake off.

Not every item requires sandblasting. New, clean steel or freshly galvanised steel only needs degreasing and chemical preparation. Sandblasting is necessary when refurbishing old gates, balustrades and garden furniture. How much does sandblasting and powder coating a gate or balustrade cost?

At the median rates, a gate with a total coating area of 8 m² costs about PLN 400 for powder coating and about PLN 340 for sandblasting. Below are examples calculated using the median rate per square metre. These are estimates, as the coating shop will quote for the item after inspecting it.

New galvanised items usually do not require sandblasting, while it is essential for an old gate with flaking paint. You must also add the cost of dismantling and reinstallation if you do not do this yourself, as well as transport to the coating shop. How much does powder coating wheels cost?

Powder coating one wheel costs about PLN 125, while coating a set of four alloy wheels has a median price of PLN 840, typically PLN 550 ‑ 900. A set of steel wheels is cheaper, at about PLN 480. Wheels are priced per item rather than per square metre because the cost depends on the work involved in removing the tyre, cleaning and masking, not on the surface area.

The price of wheel coating usually includes cleaning and surface preparation, and sometimes sandblasting. For wheels used on an everyday car, also check whether the coating shop removes and refits the tyres and balances the wheels after coating. Changing tyres on wheels is a separate item on a tyre shop’s price list.

How many years does powder coating last?

A powder coating on properly prepared steel usually lasts for many years without renewal, considerably longer than brush-applied paint. The most durable solution combines hot-dip galvanising with powder coating and is commonly used for gates and fences.

Durability depends primarily on surface preparation. If rust remains beneath the coating, it will reappear where the coating is damaged. This is why a cheaper quote that excludes sandblasting an old item may prove more expensive after a few years, when the coating has to be removed and everything coated again.

Is powder coating at home worthwhile?

Powder coating at home is impractical for larger items because the powder must be cured in an oven at a high temperature, and the item must fit inside it. DIY kits are suitable for small parts, such as motorcycle or bicycle components; having a gate, balustrade or wheels treated at a coating shop is cheaper and more reliable.

Powder coating aluminium is possible, but it requires different preparation from steel and often an additional primer. How can you avoid overpaying for powder coating?

You can save the most by combining several items into one order because coating shops add a minimum fee to small orders, while the 50 PLN/m² per-square-metre rate applies to typical orders. Here are several other options:

• Dismantle and clean the item yourself: removing hinges, locks and seals reduces the amount of masking and therefore the coating shop’s workload.
• Choose a standard colour from the coating shop’s range instead of a custom-ordered colour.
• Do not skip sandblasting an old item: saving 43 PLN/m² per square metre will result in the rust returning.
• Compare quotes with the same scope: net or gross, with or without transport.

What should you ask a powder-coating shop?

• Does the price include sandblasting, or only chemical preparation?
• Is the rate net or gross, and what is the minimum fee per order?
• How is the surface area calculated: both sides, including profiles, from a drawing or from measurements?
• Which colour and texture are included in the price, and how much does a colour outside the standard range cost?
• Do they use a primer on galvanised steel, and what coating thickness do they guarantee?
